AN 18-BORE FLINTLOCK ALL STEEL SCOTTISH BELT PISTOL BY MURDOCH OF DOUNE, 7.75inch three-stage barrel with flared octagonal muzzle decorated with panels of scrolling foliage, the action signed T MURDOCH and the whole profusely engraved with linear decoration and panels of scrolling foliage, button trigger, ram's horn butt, set to either side with vacant silver escutcheons and fitted with a pricker, belt hook mounted on the left side, ring turned steel ramrod, chipped. Circa 1760. Provenance: lot 147 Bonhams 2nd July 1991 - the Duke of Fife's Estate, Mar Lodge.
A CRISP PAIR OF 20-BORE SILVER MOUNTED FLINTLOCK DUELLING PISTOLS BY RYAN & WATSON, 9inch sighted three-stage barrels engraved LONDON on the top flats and with silver starburst fore-sights, border engraved stepped and signed locks, full stocked with ornate silver mounts to include pierced stand of arms sideplates, rococo trigger guards, the acanthus bordered butt caps with centred stand of arms and lion emerging from a turret, horn capped wooden ramrods. AN IMPRESSIVE 18-BORE SILVER MOUNTED QUEEN ANNE PISTOL BY WILLETS OF WEDNESBURY, 6.5inch turn-off cannon barrel, engraved WEDNESBURY on the top of the breech and signed JNO WILLETS beneath, further stamped with a maker's mark of IB for Barbar, border engraved rounded action, cock and frizzen replaced, trigger guard safety, large flared wooden butt with scrolling silver wire inlay and silver mounts to include, stand of arms sideplate, stand of arms escutcheon bearing a crest and magnificent grotesque mask butt cap. The maker's mark would suggest that Willets was the retailer and Barbar was the maker.
A PAIR OF 20-BORE FLINTLOCK QUEEN ANNE PISTOLS BY HADLEY OF BIRMINGHAM, 4.75inch turn-off cannon barrels engraved BIRMINGHAM on the top flat and signed T. HADLEY under the breeches, border and scroll engraved faceted actions, the flared wooden butts with silver mounts, to include grotesque mask butt caps, pierced rococo sideplates and scalloped escutcheons decorated with three hounds. TWO 19TH CENTURY CAUCASIAN OR RUSSIAN SHASQUA, the first with 79cm double fullered curved blade decorated with talismanic symbols, sun, moon and an arm wielding a sword, to either side, characteristic silver niello hilt decorated with panels of geometric designs and scrolling foliage, pommel with some crushing to the ears, contained in its silver niello mounted leather wrapped wooden scabbard, the mounts decorated to match, together with another similar with silver niello hilt and retaining just half of its blade and contained in its silver niello mounted scabbard. A LATE 18TH OR EARLY 19TH CENTURY WOOTZ BLADED TULWAR, 78.5cm curved Wootz blade decorated with a panel of foliate silver inlay at the forte, characteristic hilt with scroll guard, domed crossguard terminals, disc pommel, the whole with good traces of silvered decoration, contained in its silver mounted leather wrapped wooden scabbard, the mounts finely decorated with scrolling foliage and flower heads.
A LATE 18TH OR EARLY 19TH CENTURY INDIAN TULWAR, 71.5cm sharply curved triple fullered blade stamped with a geometric design to one side, characteristic steel hilt with dished disc pommel and scroll guard, the whole decorated in silver damascene with scrolling foliage and flowerheads, the tang rivet with foliate copper washer.
A MODERN COPY OF AN OTTOMAN KHULA KHUD, characteristic domed steel skull applied with panels of scrolling foliage in silver damascene, two plume holders, adjustable nasal bar, camail of butted links, the interior with floral quilted liner, together with an all steel Indian bow profusely decorated with scrolling foliage and flowerheads in silver damascene and a plain wooden recurving native bow. A 19TH CENTURY SINHALESE OR CEYLONESE PIHA KAETTA, 20cm fullered blade with scrolling silver and brass inlays, scrolling brass and silver inlaid reinforced forte, characteristic carved grip applied with brass and white metal plaques, contained in its white metal mounted reeded wooden grip with scroll carved chape.
AN EARLY 19TH CENTURY 22-BORE INDIAN MATCHLOCK LONGGUN, 50.5inch sighted tapering barrel with castellated muzzle, secured with four plain brass barrel bands, full stocked tastefully decorated with silver panels set with scrolling foliage and flower heads in blue and green enamels, the stock with Indian Arsenal stamp.
