Originally by the French silver designer Morel Ladeuil (circa 1820-1888), who, upon the retirement of his tutor and celebrated silver designer Antoine Vechte in 1862, was considered the most important in the field. The original Milton Shield, in silver and iron, was made for the 1867 exhibition and took three years to produce. It won a gold medal for the artist and was bought by The Victoria & Albert Museum where it remains on exhibition. An unusual 18th century silver spoon, possibly a christening spoonunmarked, circa 1770Onslow style terminal with cast floral embellishments, also with a floral heel, the reverse of the deep bowl engraved with a crest for Bishop Shute Barrington, weight 0.9oz.Footnotes:Shute BARRINGTON (1734-1826) was the 5th son of John BARRINGTON (1678-1734) 1st Viscount Barrington by Anne DAINES. He married firstly in 1761 the Lady Diana BEAUCLERK (1736-1766) daughter of Charles BEAUCLARK 2nd Duke of St Albans and secondly in 1770 Jane GUISE (died 1807) daughter of Sir John GUISE.Shute BARRINGTON was educated at Eton School and later Merton College Oxford. In 1756 he was ordained a deacon, in 1768 a Canon of St Pauls, later a Canon of St George Chapel Windsor and in 1769 Bishop of Llandaff 1769. In 1782 he was installed as Bishop of Salisbury, during which time he was Chancellor of the Order of the Garter. In 1819 he gained notoriety after the Peterloo Massacre when he ordered the 15th Hussars to charge on a crowd of demonstrators who had gathered to listen to a speech on the reform of parliamentary representation. Eighteen people were killed and over 400 injured as a result.
