Lovers on a terrace, Oudh, North India, late 18th century, opaque pigments on paper heightened with gold and silver, depicted wrapped in each other arms on a canopied bed, with gold patterned jamas adorning their entwined legs, he holds a flower in one hand and they both turn their heads to speak to the servant who brings them a cup and saucer, the moon above reflects in the lake behind them, jewelled vessels on a table below them contain food and drink and the terrace is lit with candles, outer border with repeated pattern of gold flowers, glazed and framed, painting 35.2 x 18.5cm., with border 34 x 25cm.Provenance: Private collection, LondonCondition Report: Glued down on card
A portrait of Jagat Singh II of Mewar (1734-1751) watching a Nautch, Mewar, Rajasthan, India, circa 1760, gouache heightened with gold and silver on paper, the haloed ruler shown beneath a parasol and smoking, his vivid red robes echoed in those of the dancer before him, the drum held be one of his performers and the dress of one of his courtesans, inscribed verso and recto, 30.2 x 20.7cm. An engraved brass casket dibya, Gujerat or Rajasthan, India, late 17th century, on four feet, heavily cast and of faceted form with domed hinged lid, cast loop handle extending from a faceted bud finial, engraved to sides and lid with panels containing stylised floral and geometric patterns, and with bud finial to lid, 18.5cm. high x 16cm. diam. x 11.5cm. deepFootnotes: For a comparable in shape and design see a 17th century casket in M. Zebrowski, Gold, Silver & Bronze from Mughal India, Alexandria Press, 1997, p. 284, no. 481. The feet of the present casket are of similar shape to ibid. nos. 479a and b also attributed to the 17th century.
To be Sold without ReserveA Raja and his consort, in the style of Bagta, Devarh, North India, circa 1760, opaque pigments on paper heightened with gold, the couple both point to the sky as if observing something overhead, he is delicately painted with a white halo fringed with gold, echoed by his white robes, turban and gold trimmed sash, she wears similar pearl jewellery but her skirt would have been silver, now tarnished and lacking, within added red border, 17.5 x 12cm. Footnotes: Master painter Bagta, also spelled "Bakhta" was active 1761-1814 and trained in the royal court of the Mewar Rajput Maharana Ari Singh, but found true artistic liberation after departing Udaipur for Devgarh (also ‘Deogarh’) in the late 1760's. There he received new patronage from the Rawats of the Devgarh thikana.
