A GEORGE III SMALL TORTOISESHELL TEA CADDY, c.1790, of canted oblong form, the press moulded ribbed tortoiseshell panels with ivory stringing, the fascia inset with a panel depicting a small blue glass(?) pillared mausoleum with twisted gilt metal wire "steps" enclosing a painted funerary urn on a sky blue painted ground within a mirrored frame and all enclosed by a reverse white painted slightly convex clear glass within a metal fillet, the reverse applied with an engraved silver shield (unmarked), the hinged cover with metal loop handle opening to reveal a plain interior, 4" x 2 3/4", 4 1/4" high (Illustrated) (Est. plus 24% premium inc. VAT) Non transferable standard ivory exemption declaration number VN4ZGX4NThe oval base appears to be original but the tortoiseshell and ivory are veneered above, so the edge of the base is very visible. Cover detached but no apparent damage to exterior, interior has some ivory veneer missing. Lock escutcheon damaged with loss. The mirror has tarnished, the white painting is good, however a couple of glass columns are loose and awry (one visible below on its side together with a few pieces of wire. Tortoiseshell and stringing generally good. Interior top lacks some ivory
