Aviation – Ephemera – Sir Thomas Sopwith a napkin ring handcrafted out of wood with silver bosses made by Sopwith, the aviation pioneer and designer of the Sopwith Camel aircraft. Provenance: bought by the present vendor from the Woolley and Wallis sale in Salisbury of Sopwith’s effects in the 1980s
Aviation – Airships – The R100 a small piece of silver fabric, approx 2 1/2 x 2 ins, mounted to album leaf with the legend ‘Aeroplane cloth from R100’ The R100 was conceived and designed by Barnes-Wallis and was relatively successful, crossing the Atlantic in 78 hours, and returning in 58 hours, the R101 disaster however, led the government to ban all flights by the R100 and it was eventually scrapped. Thus this may be one of the few surviving pieces from one of the landmarks of British aviation.
