LURE: Ex rare 4" solid silver Gregory style fishing lure, date stamped 23 June 1864, fully scaled hollow body on central bar, intricate detail in the fin, tail and head scale pattern design by the silversmith, Victorian Date kite Mark to tail (as per image) dates this lure to 23rd June 1864, twin fins with holes for traces, central bar with rings. Silver tested and returns positive for solid silver content.This bait resembles a few others from the Birmingham and Redditch area. Similar scale patterns are illustrated in early catalogue images c 1860-80s, makers showing these lures include and especially Allcock`s, Woodfield, Laight & Co and others. Non-make reference to a silver bait. The cost and specialist work involved in the making such a lure would suggest it was not for shop retail but perhaps an exhibition piece or even factory display.

A fine old Silver Spirit Kettle of spherical form having cane bound swing handle and elegant slender spout, engraved with scrolling foliage and flower blooms around the hinged lid and to one side of the body engraved with a heraldic crest comprised of six panels and surmounted by a crowned standing stag, to the opposite side of the body is engraved ``From Edward Solly to Charles Wood, in commemoration of their Fellowship at the memorable Battle of Leipzig of the 16th, 18th & 19th Octr 1813`, London 1798, maker BG (Benjamin Godfrey). The Battle of Leipzig also known as the Battle of Nations was the largest battle in Europe before WWI. It was notable as Rockets were used by the Second Rocker Troop, a 150 strong force sent from England to Germany lead by second Cpt. Richard Bogue. A barrage of 9 pound rockets fired by the force resulted in 2500 French troops breaking ranks to flee at a vital moment during the battle. It is known that Charles Wood (1790-1877) also fought in the Peninsula War & at Waterloo.
From the same military family`s Estate, a Superb Study of a Fox in Silver ably capturing the wily animals movement as it leaps in flight over thorn branches on a rocky base and mounted on an ebonised wood plinth, bearing a crested Silver Plaque inscribed ``15th The King`s Hussars Point to Point Race, 14th April,1890, won by Mr. Harcourt Wood`s b.m. ``Rocket``, 6 yrs. Owner purchased with a legacy bequeathed by the late Captain the Honble. A. Manners, 15th Hussars for the first point to point Race of the Regiment in Ireland``. Bearing the stamp, Elkington & Co., maker `F.E.`, London 1889, 4437 gms. approx. 21 3/4`` long overall, 7 3/4`` high (11 7/8`` incl. of plinth). It may be of significance that the bay mare was named `Rocket` in view of the events referred to in the description of the previous lot in respect of the Battle of Leipzig.
A Victorian Officer`s Silver lidded leather shoulder belt Bullet Pouch by Bent & Parker, Birmingham 1884 having floral and foliage engraved frieze and gilded ``V R`` beneath a crown to the lid, 6 1/2`` x 2 3/4`` approx., one belt loop absent. Makers `Bent & Parker` military silversmiths. Understood to have been the property of Major Charles Gam Harcourt Wood of Caer Beris.
An elegant two handled Georgian Silver Goblet London 1807/08, makers Samuel Godbehere & Edward Wigon, having reeded band and flared foot, the attractive handles most unusually having flared bases depicting hearts in the arts and crafts style although well before that period, inscribed to one side is ``Owen`s School, Islington, Presented by the friends and neighbours of Midshipman Donald A Gyles RNVR in honour of his gallant conduct while serving on HMS Broke in the action of April 20th 1917`` (6 1/8`` tall, 6 5/8`` diameter over handles, 392 gms. approx. For his stirling efforts Gyles and other of the crew received the Distinguished Service Cross. He took charge on the forecastle and although wounded in the eys, organised a gun`s crew from the survivors of the crews which had suffered heavy casualtieis and kept the guns on the forecastle going. He repelled the German sailors who swarmed on board from the destroyer which was rammed and remained at his post until after the action was finished.
