A 19th Century Duvelleroy Fan for The Paris Exhibition of 1889, marked ''Duvelleroy 1889'' recto/verso, a double fabric leaf mounted on a plain light coloured wood frame. The recto shows magnificent buildings around the Champ de Mars. This is the most famous of the Paris Trade exhibitions as it was held to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the storming of the bastille and is best known for giving Paris the Eiffel Tower, the then tallest building in the world. Pastel colours mainly a pale sea green emphasis in black, some colour to the clothing worn by visitors. Guard length 11.25 inches or 28cm; A Chinese Commemorative Fan, depicting the Japanese Prince Fushimi, Chief of Staff of the Japanese Navy in the 1930's, General Yamamoto, who also held high rank in the Navy, and General Nishi, a Japanese Army officer. Double paper leaf mounted on simple wooden sticks painted in silver. Guard length 9 inches or 23cm; and A Small Wood Fan, gilded, the single gauze leaf dated 1911, initialled ERM, with a central depiction of the Lion and Unicorn and the motto ''Dieu et Mon droit'', this being the motto of the Monarch of the United Kingdom outside Scotland, reputedly first used by Richard l as a battle cry and as a reference to his French Ancestry and the divine right of the Monarch to govern. Guard length 7.25 inches or 18cm (3)Fan 1 - Generally good. Fan 2 - The leaf is peppered with miniscule holes but sound. Fan 3 - Some splitting to the folds to the right.

A Large Early 20th Century Bone Fan, mounted with eau de nil silk and backed with gauze of a similar colour. Of balloon form, the leaf is embroidered with silver sequins of different shapes and sizes, in the design of swags and bows. The monture is lightly carved, pierced and gilded. Height to top centre when closed is approx 13.5 inches or 34.5cm; and An Early 20th Century Fan of Fontange Shape, the monture of light wood painted gold, the fine gauze leaf painted with a design of autumnal leaves, mainly in gold, with four small birds with fluffy chest feathers and inquisitive expressions in the central panel below. Height to top centre when closed is approx. 14 inches or 36cm (2)Fan 1 - One central gorge stick is detached from the rib. At this point the silk has been damaged to the lower edge of the leaf. At some point the fan has been pinned to something, a pin hole is evident to the top right side and to the left side there is also rust where the shape of a drawing pin can be seen. Fan 2 - The gauze is split in several places, and the top edge has losses. No signature noted.

An Early 20th Century Handmade Brussels Bobbin Lace Fan, mounted on light pink mother of pearl sticks, the monture plain. The fan is finished with a knotted and fringed cream silk tassel. Guard length 10 inches or 25cm. Together with a wooden fan box, covered in gold, blue and silver coloured paper, labelled inside the slightly domed lid ''J Duvelleroy 167 Regent Street, London W''; and A Late 19th Century Gilded Wooden Fan, the monture carved and pierced and with sticks continuing up onto the leaf à la Sultane. The single leaf is formed from bands of cream silk alternating with machine insertion lace, the top border being wider and finished with a shaped edge. Guard length 9 inches or 23cm (2)Fan 1 - In good order, very very slight discoloration to the lace. The box has no fastening nor seems to ever have had. Fan 2 - Generally sound albeit a bit soiled. The gilding is rubbed in places. The ribbon on the verso has losses (second layer) and is detached at one end on the bottom border.

An Unusual Gothic Regency Brisé Fan, the inner sticks of pale horn, the guards of gold metal with mother of pearl inlay to the tips. The monture features very pointed sticks, and a rare trefoil shape to the rivet. The guards are intricately moulded with flowers on panels which are set into the main borders. The twenty inner horn sticks are pierced and gilded, the tips clouté with silver roundels. T/W a silver metal fan tube. Guard length 7.5 inches or 19cmOne central stick missing, the rivet fragment present. The ribbon needs replacing. When closed, seen to be very slightly warped.

A Bone Fan, mounted à la Sultane, the monture carved and pierced, with regular and repeated designs, the pink silk leaf plain recto/verso, contained in a pink silk fabric covered fan box; A Further Bone Fan, carved and pierced and à la Sultane, the cream silk leaf embroidered with several shapes and sizes of silver sequins; A Bone Frame for a telescopic fan, the upper guards carved and inlaid with silver metal roundels; and A Small Early 20th Century Bone Fan, with some gilding and inset metal roundels, the gauze leaf mounted à l'Anglaise and covered with gold sequins in a scrolling design (4)The first fan is generally in good order, the top border having losses, and the box fabric is damaged. The second fan has been affected by humidity and the sequins to several panels are tarnished. The third fan is intact but lacking a leaf, and the final fan has one broken rib and a repaired break to the upper guard.

Circa 1910, A Dance Fan, with seventeen numbered wooden sticks, the monture painted cream, a patent number 467566 on the shoulder of the lower guard. The double paper leaf is printed on the recto with two romantic scenes, ribbons and flowers, with space verso for autographs. The upper guard is much thicker than the lower, and made with a hole in the tip into which a pencil can be slotted. An attached pencil is inscribed ''Delgado London''. Guard length 8.75 inches or 22cm; and Circa 1900, A Miniature Ivory Carnet De Bal, with numbered sticks, 12 inner, 2 guards, both engraved with flowers, the upper guard with a plain section for initials. Hallmarked silver, Henry William Dee, London, 1869. The verso is plain. Guard length 2.75 inches or 7cm (2)Both fans good.

Lot 43

An Elegant Regency Bone Fan, with classical carving and piercing to the upper guards and gorge sticks, the double paper leaf with main detail to the upper border, where brown silk ribbon is overlaid and then embroidered with silver sequins, accompanied by delicate drawing of flowers and fringing. The verso is plain. A Further Regency Classically Carved Bone Fan, the leaf printed to the centre with a charming scene of two young girls adoring a small pony with flower garlands. The cartouche and upper section are embellished with silver sequins and foils of various forms and sizes; and A Circa 1830-40 Bone Fan, the monture carved and pierced, silvered and gilded, the guards overlaid with mother-of-pearl. The double velum leaf is painted to the recto with a scene of couples at leisure near ruined buildings, one with a dog wishing to play. The verso features a simple floral spray. Guard lengths 23.5cm, 25cm and 27cm respectively (3)The first fan is generally in good order, if a bit grubby. The second fan lacks a guard, the upper guard is repaired, one gorge stick is missing and the fan is generally grubby. The third fan has losses to the mop overlay, and damage to two gorge sticks. The silvering is dull.

An Early 20th White Mother-of-Pearl Fan, the gauze leaf mounted à l'Anglaise and applied with cream silk in the upper section, the whole them embroidered with silver sequins and panels of silver foil. The verso is plain. Guard length 8.5 inches or 21cm. Together with a cream card fan box embossed in gold within the lid ''J Duvelleroy BY APPOINTMENT LONDON, 167 Regent Street W''; and A Striking Early 20th Century Mother-of-Pearl Fan, the monture dyed a rich ruby red, the guards gilded and silvered in scrolling and foliate designs. The double leaf lacks a recto, the verso of beige gauze remaining. The rivets bear red stones. Guard length 9.5 inches or 24cm. Together with a dark pink silk covered card fan box, the lining a bright pink silk (2)Fan 1 - Generally very good, one glue stain under the gauze on the lower guard. Fan 2 - The monture is in good order, the recto of the leaf is not present.

An Early 19th Century Wooden Fan, mounted with a sea green double paper leaf, completely plain save for a silver top border. Guard length 9 inches or 23cm; A Late 18th Century Carved And Pierced Wood Brisé Fan, the top half of all sticks carved and pierced with classical designs, some colour highlights. A central applied vignette of a gravure on paper shows a pensive lady in classical flowing robes, a dog at her feet. To each side, a rectangular vignette painted onto the sticks, containing stylised swags and flowers. The verso is plain. Bone thumb guards. Twenty-eight inner stick plus two guards. Guard length 9.5inches or 24cm; A Late 18th Century Wood Brisé Fan, carved and pierced throughout with roundels and a central shield containing initials. Twenty-seven inner sticks and two guards. Guard length 10.25 inches or 26cm; and A Late 18th Century Wood Brisé Fan, with Chinoiserie style decoration, the twenty four inner sticks and two guards carved and pierced and featuring 6 ovals. Centrally, the applied paper panel depicts a rural scene with rocks, stylised trees, a bridge spanning a river on which basic boats are travelling. A multi storey pagoda style building sits atop the rocks. To the left, however, is a much more European style building with a stone tower, and castellated walls behind. The verso is plain. Guard length 11 inches or 27.5cm (4)Fan 1 - Generally good, some rubbing to the folds. Fan 2 - The ribbon needs replacing. One stick is broken at the tip and repaired on the verso. Several of the stick tips have loss. Fan 3 - The upper guard has part of the next stick in stuck to it, and the guard itself has damage. The lower guard has 2 metal plate repairs. At least 3 of the inner sticks have losses. The ribbon needs replacing. Fan 4 - At least 2 sticks are missing, the large ovals are missing one stick at each side.

Lot 46

An Early 19th Century Pale Horn Brisé Fan, slightly gilded, the sticks with pointed tips, and painted with flowers to the recto. The monture is set with small silver metal roundels. The verso is plain. Guard length 7 inches or 18cm. Together with a wooden box of the correct size, varnished, the lid painted with flowers; and A Late 19th Century Pale Horn Fan, the cream gauze leaf mounted à l'Anglaise, and embroidered with swags and bows and flowers in tiny gold and silver sequins. The monture is gilded and painted in silver on the guards in noticeably Art Nouveau style. Guard length 8 inches or 20cm (2)Fan 1 - Generally sound, paint rubbed, needs replacement ribbon. Fan 2 - The sticks are all present but at least one needs re-securing. The gauze is strong, one tiny hole next to a stick, hard to see.

A Large Circa 1890's Black Gauze Fan, mounted à l'Anglaise on black wooden sticks, the upper border edged with a fine narrow black bobbin lace. The guards and gorge are clouté with silver metal dots and feature lightly carved flowers which are painted in soft blue and gold. The leaf is painted in shades of soft blue and turquoise, and embroidered with tiny gold and blue sequins. Musical instruments feature in the centre and side vignettes, along with two charming scenes of a figure in Pierrot costume playing music to his lady. The verso is undecorated. Guard length 13 inches or 33cm plus lace. Contained in a cream silk covered card fan box with domed lid, a label for J Duvelleroy 167 regent Street London fixed to the lid interior; A Dainty Circa 1900 Cream Gauze Fan, of scalloped balloon form, mounted on carved, pierced and silvered bone sticks. The silk leaf, mounted à l'Anglaise, is embroidered with silver sequins of various sizes and forms, and swags of tambour work in metal threads. Guard length 6.75 inches or 16cm, overall height as leaf protrudes, 8.25 inches or 21cm; and A 1920's Chinese Wood And Paper Tourist Fan, with brightly coloured leaf (3)Black fan: Generally good: two inner sticks/ribs are detached as the rivet is missing, the sticks consequently all loose (all present). Cream fan, some light foxing to the silk and next to the upper guard the silk is just starting to split. Sequins bright and shiny.

A Circa 1900-10 Fan, the leaf of black net embroidered with sprays of iris and leaves and embellished with silver sequins. The leaf is mounted on black wood sticks, which are lightly incised and clouté with small silver metal roundels. Guard length 10 inches or 25.5cm; A Large Late 19th Century Fan, of black gauze appliqued with machine lace flower baskets swags and bows. The monture, of black wood, is incised in a classical design, the lower guards and gorge sticks being attractively shaped. Guard length 13 inches or 33cm; and A Large Late 19th White Mother-of-Pearl Fan, the sticks carved and pierced and silvered, both guards being particularly detailed in design. The main body of the leaf is cream gauze, in vertical bands alternating with cream lace, the top border of Valenciennes bobbin lace with a flower repeat. Guard length 14 inches or 35.5cm. Together with a brown leather-effect fan box, the lid interior embossed in gold with the Prince of Wales feathers and ''Nathalie Sloane Street London'' (3)Fan 1 - The fan is generally sound but the original off white colour of the embroidery has been affected by humidity and approx. Half is now quite brown. A small amount of the sequins have tarnished. Fan 2 - The ribs have probably been re-secured as there is glue residue on the leaf, showing up as clear, not brown. Fan 3 - Generally good save for glue having been used to re-secure some ribs which has left brown stains in places. The box lid is missing one end.

Lot 10

A Mid-18th Century Fan in the Chinoiserie Style, découpé, the single paper leaf in silver and mounted à l'Anglaise on pierced and carved ivory sticks. The recto depicts a seated man watching a child at play, a bird above, the child with net poised to catch it. The reserves are painted with flowers, the left side featuring thistles. The verso is more simply decorated with flowers. Guard length 11.25 inches or 28.5cmThe silvering is a little dark with tarnish. The découpage is in good order, with one small area of loss to the bottom left.
