A pair of very small, pocket or muff percussion pistols by Collins of London. 1.25 barrels of approximately 140 bore. (.321"). Blued barrels dolphin hammers with sliding top-safeties and folding triggers. Finely chequered bag shaped walnut grips with silver escutcheons. These pistols retain virtually all their original colour case hardening and blueing. Part of the nose of one hammer now broken off. 4.5" long "
A pattern 1796 Infantry Officer's Sword. The gilt brass knucklebow with folding shell guard. Adam style pommel decorated with acanthus leaves with wood grip bound with silver wire. The blued and gilt blade decorated with the royal cypher of George III, royal coat of arms, stands of arms, foliate designs and makers name John Gill's Warranted". Blade 31.75".
A Household Cavalry Full Dress Sword, 1796-1857. Gilt brass boatshell guard with silver wire bound wood grip. Similar to the Pattern 1796 Heavy Cavalry sword but without the cross-bar quillon and with a vase-shaped tang button. Straight, flat backed, single edged blade with single fuller to both sides. Spear pointed blade is double edged for the last 9. Blade 35.5"
A pattern 1821 Volunteer Artillery Officer's Sword in Scabbard. Steel three bar guard with slot for sword knot near the pommel. Wood grip covered in black fishskin and bound with silver wire. The slightly curved, flat backed blade has a single fuller to each side to within 10.25 of the double edged spear point. The blade is etched over two thirds of its length with a foliate design. The right side of the blade is etched "VOLUNTEER ARTILLERY" and the left side with a flaming bomb and artillery piece. The left side of the ricasso is etched with the maker's name "FIRMIN & SONS, 153 STRAND, LONDON". Manufactured 1839. Steel scabbard with two suspension rings. Blade 32".
A pair of back action percussion lock, full-stocked pistols. The walnut stocks profusely inlaid with silver wire in the form of a climbing plant with tendrils, flowers and leaves. Octagonal sighted barrels 9.75 of approximately 20 bore (.615"). Each barrel is secured to the stocks with two flat keys. Bead foresight with fixed open and aperture rearsight. Locks engraved "Hewson". Two Hewsons are recorded. one in Somerset (1842 - 1844) and in Devon (1843 - 1870). It is likely that this is the same firm. One ramrod and one hammer spur missing. 15.75" long
A pair of French flintlock pistols of the second half of the 17th century by Thuraine of Paris and Le Hollandois. Fully stocked in French walnut with 8 (20cm) barrels of 31 bore (.533" calibre). Ornately engraved and pierced silver furniture and Le Hollandois (Adrien Reynier) were gunsmiths by appointment to Louis XIV. Examples of their joint collaboration are known in the Tojhusmeet, Copenhagen, the Musee d'Armes Liege, The Royal House of Hanover (see Sotheby's sale "The Royal House of Hanover Collection 5-15 October 2005 Lots 755, 756, 757) Thuraine's name appears with Le Hollandois on the title page of Jacquinet's Pattern book of gunmaker's designs "Plusiers Modes des Plus Nouvelles Manieres Qui Sont en Usage en L'art D'arquebuserie" published in Paris 1660. the butts with silver monogrammed cartouches of classical figures within ornate borders. The triggerguards in cast silver engraved with a classical figure and trumpet the side-nails supported by ornate pierced silver filigree plates. The three stage faceted and smooth barrels damascened in gold with a standing classical figure and grotesques and "ET LE HOLLANDO" (sic) respectively. Overall length 15.25" (38.5cm) NOTE: Thuraine the pommels similarly gilt and with pierced silver caps the lockplates marked "THURAINE A PARIS". Please note that the barrels and forends have been shortened.
