By his brilliant leadership and great tactical skill Wing Commander Gadd played a prominent part in the success achieved.”. On 9th October 1944 he took part in an attack on a German convoy off S.W. Coast of Norway, an extract from HQCC gives the following details “The foreign press announced ‘Berlin 10.10.44 Escort vessels and Flak of a German convoy off the South West coast of Norway yesterday morning brought down 9 enemy aircraft in 7 minutes. Further enemy aircraft were probably destroyed...In the fierce battles with the aircraft which attacked in several waves, 5 more aircraft were brought down, and 2 German launches were sunk. Some of the remaining aircraft were set on fire, and were last seen flying low over the sea, so they may be presumed to have been destroyedÂ’ below which it continues ‘The True Story: 18 Beaufighters and 8 Mosquitoes attacked a convoy of 5 merchant vessels and 6 escort vessels off Egersund on 9th October. Two merchant vessels and a T.T.A were severely damaged and possibly sunk, and an escort vessel and merchant vessel left on fire. Three Beaufighters suffered from damage, but there were no casualties and all aircraft returned to base.” On 8th November 1944 Gadd led a Strike to Midtgulen Fjord “Led force in over 3,500Â’ snow covered mountains, both M/Vs left on fire, one after big explosion forÂ’ard, steam and smoke up to 300Â’ Other 3 two of which were armed trawlers badly shot up with cannon and left smoking. Owing to mountains had to make steep dive from 4000Â’ Narrowness of fjord and ricochets of own cannon shells made attack difficult, if not a little dicey..” again his own plane received some damage. The merchant ships were the Helga Ferdinand and Aquila both shown in the log book as sunk. A third vessel, Framnaes was also damaged in the attack, this proved to be a Norwegian civilian vessel. On February 1st 1945 Gadd was awarded the bar to his DFC (London Gazette announcement February 2nd 1945). His log book also notes 12th May 1945 “Escorting HMS Devonshire on route to Oslo with Crown Prince of Norway.”The Goldfish Club was formed in 1942 by the rubber company P.B Cow, who manufactured Mae West life jackets and rubber dinghies, with membership being open to the service men who ditched in the sea; by the end of WWII there were over 9000 members, the badge was of embroidered cloth due to the prohibition of production of wire badges during the war.
