‡ Naum Slutzky, a rare Modernist silver ring, 1962, designed as a trio of partially articulated silver bars, to a silver band with panelled shoulders, size P, maker's mark for Naum Slutzky, case stamped Horton Naum Slutzky (1894-1933) was born in Ukraine, the son of Gilel Slutzky, a goldsmith in the employ for Carl Fabergé. Naum Slutzky trained as a goldsmith under Josef Hoffman at the Wiener Werkstatte, before joining the Bauhaus. He fled to England in 1933 as a result of the Nazi rise to power, and eventually taking a series of posts as a lecturer in jewellery design in London and Birmingham, starting at the Central College of Art (now St Martin's), and participating in the seminal 1961 International Jewellery Exhibition at Goldmith's Hall. He initially planned to exhibit his early Bauhaus pieces, but instead exhibited recent designs, in a strikingly modernist style, which were subsequently purchased by the Goldmith's Hall.
