Late 19th / early 20th century miniature carriage clock with French movement, platform escapement and circular white enamel dial with Roman numerals, in a domed tortoiseshell case with silver foliate mounts and silver swing handle, four ball feet, with original green leather carrying case, 10.5cm overall height, including handle CONDITION REPORT General overall condition is reasonable. Movement appears to be in working order. Movement fits case but does not sit square and may not be original. Enamel dial has hairline cracks between III and IV and VIII and IX. Tortoiseshell case has some damage. Surface is dull, scuffed and scratched. Base and bottom rear left corner of case are damaged. Rear door is scuffed and slightly distorted. Bottom edge is worn. Inner frame may not be complete. Silver mounts are quite good except lower border which is damaged at both rear corners and may have been repaired at front corners. Feet are worn and two have some damage. Top handle securing nuts are odd.Carrying case is scuffed in places. Strap handle is damaged and part of it is missing. Interior worn.

The Duke of Wellington - a fascinating and emotive piece of hair from the mane of The Duke's War horse, Copenhagen, whom he rode at the Battle of Waterloo - the chestnut-coloured hair tied with string in ringlets, with original handwritten folded letter 'Taken by me from the mane of the horse Copenhagen' and 'The Property of The Duke of Wellington. Copenhagen was used by The Duke as his charger at the Battle of Waterloo (signed) H. N. Foucaus - Stratfield Saye 1835 and a small chestnut horse', further inscribed on reverse 'Duke of Wellington's Horse Copenhagen - Hair from Mane' and in pencil 'Copenhagen Stratfield Saye'.Provenance: Recently discovered by us in the concealed letter compartment in a Victorian gentleman's toilet box (lot 551 in this sale), with silver fittings, dated 1839. Copenhagen, The Duke of Wellington's celebrated War horse was born in 1808 and died on 12th February 1836 on The Duke's Estate at Stratfield Saye House, aged 28 years. He was described as 'a dark chestnut with two white heels, a hollow-back powerful horse'. Wellington said of Copenhagen 'There may have been many faster horses, no doubt many handsomer, but for bottom and endurance I never saw his fellow'. After serving his master well in battle he became a treasured pet although still ridden by The Duke on State occasions and even ridden up to the door of 10 Downing Street by The Duke when he became Prime Minister in 1828. When Copenhagen died in 1836, he was buried with full military honours in the Ice House Paddock at Stratfield Saye with a memorial stone marking the spot

Silver plate is scratched through in places along top edge and there is a bubble in the surface to right of the Royal insignia. Clock is not working and it is assumed battery is dead. Outer packaging is in good condition

A LATE 17TH OR EARLY 18TH CENTURY WHEEL-LOCK CARBINE, 63cm sighted octagonal barrel fitted with rear leaf sights and signed in silver G Fuber (?), flat lock profusely engraved with a classical scene, rubbed, sliding pan cover, figured fruitwood full stock, the fore-end profusely inlaid in horn with mythical beasts, fruits and geometric designs, the sideplate area similarly inlaid with a pair of mythical beasts and a flower head, , the cheek piece decorated with a stylised crest composed of mythical beasts supporting and oval plaque with a pair of entwined initials, the remainder of the stock and butt decorated to match, the underside of the butt with painted inventory number 322, iron trigger guard, engraved horn ramrod pipes, one lacking, horn or bone-capped wooden ramrod.
A LATE 18TH CENTURY FRENCH MARKED SILVER-HILTED SMALL-SWORD, 82cm incurved triangular section plain blade, characteristic hilt with pierced and dished oval guard decorated with concentric bands of geometric designs to the underside and set with faceted studs to the inside, D-shaped knuckle guard pierced and decorated with faceted studs, this mirrored on the ovoid pommel and grip, the lower end of the grip bearing the eagle or parrot head Paris Import mark for 1781-1789 and further marked for the Maison Commune 1787.
A PRINCE OF WALES VOLUNTEERS OFFICER'S MAMELUKE AND SHOULDER BELT PLATE ENSEMBLE, 79cm slightly curved clipped back blade with spear point etched with a Greek key motif, the magic eye in the talismanic fashion, further etched with 82nd regiment of foot devices and the owner's initials, the back edge etched with maker's panel for Reddell, characteristic copper gilt hilt , the crossguard engraved with the magic eye to either side, two-piece ivory grips, contained in its gilt mounted leather wrapped wooden scabbard, the upper mount with maker's panel and all of the mounts decorated with the magic eye and stands of arms, together with its companion enamel and silver highlighted gilt officer's shoulder belt plate. The initials are those of General Henry Adolphus CB Proctor the Colonel of the regiment. (2)
AN 80-BORE SILVER MOUNTED PERCUSSION SCOTTISH BELT PISTOL BY WIGHTON OF EDINBURGH, 5inch three-stage barrel, faceted at the breech and muzzle and engraved on alternate facets with a band of scrolling foliage, breech retains good traces of blued finish, border and scroll engraved bolted lock signed WIGHTON EDINBURGH, the hammer decorated to match, full silver stock decorated with panels of scrolling foliage, the back strap further engraved with the owner's crest and motto SPERNIT HUMUM, characteristic ram's horn butt containing a thistle form pricker, ball trigger, belt hook mounted on the left side, traces of blueing, turned steel ramrod. The crest is that of the Mitchell Family. Probably A. G. Wighton - a noted silversmith.
A FINE AND RARE EARLY 19TH CENTURY OFFICER'S TARLETON OF THE ROYAL ARTILLERY, the brass trimmed leather skull with straw filled bearskin crest, the headband or turban secured by embossed lacquered and gilt chains, lacquered and gilt regimental title to the front and lacquered gilt crowned GR helmet plate to the right side, velvet backed lacquered gilt chinscales, correct red and white three-stage feather plume, pair of silver bullion tassels to the rear, stamped brass collection tag no. 114 also secured to the rear, the interior with scarlet silk lining. Some mothing to headband skin otherwise very good.
A FINE QUALITY 19TH CENTURY MOROCCAN SNAPHAUNCE MUSKET, 54.5inch sighted barrel secured with four foliate embossed silver barrel bands, the whole profusely decorated along its entire length with gold damascene scrolling foliage and bearing two inscriptions, one on the sighting rib and the other to either side of the barrel "Pelt the enemy with flames that break those who are fleeing and pray to the Commander of the Faithful for Glory and Victory" another recounting the pilgrimage to the tomb of the Prophet Muhammad from al-Shifa' of Qadi 'lyad "Good tidings to you! Good tidings! Their domes have come into sight, alight, for you have achieved what you desire and what you have chosen!" and the last from the Qasidat al-Burdah of al-Busiri "Good tidings! O Community of Islam, we have through the grace of God an indestructible pillar", the breech set with a maker's tablet for Al-Zarwali, the lock and cock of characteristic form decorated with gold damascene to match and set with panels of silver foliage, full stocked with iron mounts, the trigger guard decorated in gold damascene to match, ivory butt plate, steel ramrod.
AN EDWARDIAN WALKING STICK, the large carved ivory handle in the form of a heraldic lion holding a shield decorated with the head of Medusa, above two further figures, the silver collar hallmarked for Birmingham and with maker's mark for Alexander Clark & Co., malacca haft, metal ferrule, 94cm long over all.
