An Edwardian silver salver, of shaped circular form with a piecrust border, standing upon three scroll feet, engraved inscription verso reading 'Presented to Captain St. George Clowes by The Household of Grosvenor House on the occasion of his marriage 10th August 1914', maker William Hutton & Sons Ltd, Sheffield 1914, dia.21cm, 14.8ozt.Note: Winchester St George Clowes (known as Sainty) reached the rank of Captain after serving in South Africa at the turn of the last century, where he fought alongside Captain Lord Hugh William Grosvenor. He competed in the 1908 Summer Olympic Games motorboating race as a crew member on the Wolseley-Siddeley, which belonged to Hugh Grosvenor, Duke of Westminster and entered his employment at Grosvenor House as Chief Agent. In 1914, he married Hazel Buxton and was reinstated to the rank of Captain at the start of World War One. Hugh Grosvenor was killed in action in October 1914, but Clowes survived the war and died in 1940 in Framlingham, Suffolk.
