A 5 shot .36” Manhattan Fire Arms Co “Navy” percussion revolver, with 5” barrel, number 67266 on all parts; London proved, barrel with address and patent dates, cylinder with series of fight scenes in foliate bordered ovals, and bearing 1859 patent date; with silver plated brass trigger guard and backstrap and plain walnut grips. Good Working Order and Condition retaining traces of original finish (some screw heads “chewed up”); in its contemporary open top tooled leather holster with maker’s name “J.S(tr)atton Cuero, Tex” (worn, the belt loop an old replacement). A Sudanese Hadendowa warrior’s large traditional “x” shaped hilted dagger c 1880, with curved blade, silver wire binding to centre of grip and small silver studs to top arms. Excellent patina to wood. In original tooled brown leather sheath. Together with warrior’s wide leather belt. GC Plate 9
An extremely fine pair of cased 30 bore flintlock duelling pistols by Westley Richards c 1820, 14” overall, sighted browned octagonal damascus barrel 9½”, with 2 platinum lines at breeches, platinum touch holes and engraved “Westley Richards” in Old English script; the signed bolted locks having rainproof pans and rollers on frizzen springs, and engraved with scrolling foliage including on the frizzens; wlnaut halfstocks with rounded chequered butts, horn fore end caps and German silver barrel wedge plates and vacant rectangular escutcheons; blued steel trigger guards engraved with dog tooth borders and scrolls terminating in rampant heads, and enclosing single set trigger; with brass mounted ramrods having concealed worms. Very Good Working Order and Pristine Condition beneath the congealed oil which has obviously preserved them; contained in their original green baize lined fitted mahogany case, lid with circular brass escutcheons and folding circular brass handle, with maker’s trade label and containing brass mounted copper 3 way flask, brass mounted ebony loading/cleaning rod with interchangeable and spare ebony ramrod with removable end, steel pincer mould (worn with pitting), and wad punch. A double barrelled 14 bore percussion sporting gun, by Smith, London, probably Saml & C Smith, 43” overall, rebrowned damascus barrels 27½”, signed locks finely engraved with borders, scrolls, game birds and dogs, dolphin head hammers profusely scroll engraved overall; walnut halfstock having chequered wrist (worn), engraved silver throat pipe, rectangular barrel wedge plates and escutcheon with traces of family crest; steel mounts comprising large trigger guard engraved with borders, game bird, dog and foliage, and butt plate, tang engraved with game birds and serial number 1915; with brass mounted wooden ramrod. A walking stick formerly belonging to Major General Sir George Colley shot by the Boers at the Battle of Majuba Hill in 1881. Lower section broken off (see below), 29” long, one side having a silver coloured plaque engraved “I.M.O (in memory of) Major Genl Sir George Pomeroy Colley killed at the Amujaba (sic) Hill, Natal, March 1881, fighting against the insurgent Boers. This stick carried by him during the Ashantee War of 1874 and broken over a native’s back for refusing to carry a wounded man, was given by him on his return to Lt Colonel Gosset, 54th Regiment. Plate 6 Note: Major General Colley, after a very distinguished army career, was the Commander in Chief in Natal. At Majuba Hill British troops had seized the hill after a night march and were overlooking the Boer Camp. However, by a sudden rush the Boers captured the hill and in the fighting Colley received a rifle bullet through the forehead killing him. His death and the British defeat caused the British Government to begin peace negotiations with the Boers.
A contemporary Belgian made 6 shot .36 Colt Model 1851 Navy percussion revolver, number 15316, the breech stamped “Colt Patent” in 2 lines, the cylinder with naval scene and Liege proof, the brass trigger guard and backstrap retaining faint traces of having been silver plated, the butt with nicely figured polished walnut grips. GC (action and nipples AF, barrel wedge replaced, dull grey finish to steel parts). Plate 12
A double barrelled 14 bore percussion sporting gun by James Hall (Birmingham ?) c 1840, 46½” overall, twist barrels 30”, with foliate engraved breeches, top rib inlaid with 2 gold lines and gold gun dog pointing at game birds; top strap engraved with scrolled foliage inhabited by game birds, and a tiger mask; signed back action locks finely engraved with foliage, flower heads, game dogs and birds; dark burr maple halfstock having German silver throat pipe, barrel wedge plates and inlaid game dog beneath the butt; steel mounts comprise trigger guard with scroll grip engraved with foliage inhabited by game bird and stand of drums, and butt plate tang engraved with game birds and dog amongst foliage; with replacement wooden ramrod. Good Working Order and Condition (some rust staining to barrels and trigger guard and slight flaking to stock varnish). Plate 25
A good quality double barrelled 30 bore flintlock sporting gun, by W Mills, London, c 1820, 45” overall, rebrowned twist barrels 29½” with 2 gold lines and gold maker’s poincons at breech, top rib engraved “Gun-Maker-to-his-Royal-Highness-the-Prince-of-Wales”; signed stepped locks finely engraved with fern tip borders, scrolls and flower heads, and having rainproof pans and rollers on frizzen springs; figured ash (?) halfstock having chequered wrist, silver barrel wedge plates and blued steel mounts including large trigger guard engraved with game birds in foliage and with pineapple finial, and foliate engraved butt plate tang; horn tipped ramrod having brass mounted concealed worm. Near Very Good Working Order and Condition, the locks crisp and retaining some colour hardened finish (small crack in the stock below one lock). Plate 25
An extremely fine pair of officer’s cased 16 bore percussion belt pistols by Westley Richards, 13” overall, the browned twist barrels 8” with platinum lined shell engraved breeches, engraved on the top flats “Westley Richards, 170 New Bond St, London”; with signed and scroll engraved colour hardened bolted locks; walnut fullstock with rounded chequered butts, oval silver (?) barrel wedge plates, and rectangular escutcheon engraved with family crest and the initials “MP”; with engraved blued steel mounts, 4” steel belt hooks, and swivel ramrods. Very Good Working Order and near Pristine Condition beneath the congealed oil which has obviously preserved them; contained in their original green baize lined fitted mahogany case, with folding brass handle in the lid, maker’s trade label and containing copper flask by Sykes (slightly dented), steel pincer mould by William Davies, brass mounted ebony loading/cleaning rod, nipple key with pricker, turnscrew, leather pouch containing spare nipples, linen bag with remains of paper label and containing lead balls, quantity of loose patches, bone handled cleaning brush, and key to case. A good clean set (lid of case slightly split). Plate 35 Note: A letter accompanying the lot, from the Heraldry Society, suggests that the arms are those of the Portal family and the initials are those of Melville Portal of Laverstoke, Hants (1819-1904)
A rare pre-1856 officer’s lance cap of the 16th (The Queen’s) Light Dragoons (Lancers), black leather skull, front peak and back peak both of which are bordered with gilt braid, broad gilt lace band with crimson central ribbon to waist, black cloth sides and top with gilt cord trim (missing on one corner), gilt rosette bearing VR cypher, gilt on silver plated rayed plate bearing 13 battle honours “Peninsula” to “Sobraon”, black cloth backed chinchain and lion’s head ear bosses, white feather plume (replaced), leather and silk lining. Good Condition for age (the lower part of the skull shows signs of exposure to damp and is somewhat shrunken. Plate 7
