OF BARBADOS, SLAVE & NAVAL IMPORTANCE; a George III hallmarked silver Lloyds Patriotic Fund silver and silver gilt vase and cover of Adam design by Samuel Hennell, the lift-off cover with knop finial above angled swept handles and laurel wreath cartouche inscribed 'This cup is presented by the underwriters of Lloyds Coffee House to Captain George Keyzar of The Ship Irlam as a testimony of his gallant conduct in beating a French privateer of superior force on his voyage to Barbadoes [sic] July 1804', on spreading embossed circular foot, London 1804, height 30.5cm, approx 32ozt, sold with an ink and watercolour portrait purporting to be Captain Keyzar, unsigned, approx 30 x 22cm, framed and glazed (2).The Ship Irlam was launched in 1800 from Liverpool as a West Indiaman sailing between Liverpool and Barbados. Although a merchantman not a privateer, she made an unusually aggressive use of her letter of marque capturing or re-capturing four vessels. She sank from a dramatic wrecking in 1812. Captain Keyzar is mentioned as one of several captains of the 24 gun vessel, and was involved in the manumission (setting free) of slaves on behalf of free coloureds and others in Barbados. He is mentioned on nine deeds in relation to manumission (see Pedro L V Welch, 'Unhappy and Afflicted Women? Free Coloured Women on Barbados: 1780-1834, Inter American University Press 1999).Additional InformationA couple of small dents to the rim of the lid, pin head sized dents elsewhere but a good solid gauge inscription, clear hallmark, clear and a good piece of naval history.

KRONENBITTER OF MUNICH; a late 19th century silver gilt and enamel decorated chalice of Gothic design, with bell shaped bowl and applied roundels above a band of grapes, four roundels to the stem and four enamelled plaques depicting saints to the foot, stamped to base 'Kronenbitter In Munchen', height 23.5cm, approx 22ozt/688g.Additional InformationAround the foot rim there are a series of roundels applied, one of which is missing. Working up from here there are some red enamelled roundels, three of which are chipped. Heavy tarnishing and toning throughout. There is one roundel missing to the base of the bowl, a small area of restoration to the bunches of grapes.
A James II hallmarked silver twin handled porringer, with scrolling handles, upper band of embossed decoration and lower band decorated with chased leaves and scrolls, London 1685, length 15cm, diameter of bowl 9.5cm, height 7cm, approx 4.9ozt/152g.Additional InformationTraces of punched initials 'IIM' to the body, the bowl is sprung as expected, some tarnishing and surface scratches and general wear throughout. There are also two small splits to the rim in one part.
WILLIAM MAUNDY; a rare Charles I hallmarked silver shallow twin handled drinking cup, with repeating hammered decoration, twin scroll shell handles and with punched initials to the centre 'WLA', London 1633, width 19cm, diameter of bowl 13.8cm, approx 3ozt/92.2g.Additional InformationAs can be seen, there has been old repairs to both handles, light surface scratches, a few tiny splits to the edges as expected due to the age, the hallmarks are relatively clear.

The main body with tiny indentations, general surface wear throughout, light scratches where the cover meets, the cover is not marked but has minor denting around the foot rim where it meets the base section, the pierced detail appears to be in good condition with the odd minor bend to the detail, but nothing serious.
