After John Willis Good (British, 1845-1879): A late 19th century patinated bronze equestrian model of a huntsman and his houndspossibly cast by Elkington & Co.the huntsman seated on his steed blowing his horn, the two hounds before his horse, on a naturalistic canted rectangular base, 31cm high, 29cm wide, 15cm deepFootnotes:John Willis Good is the leading English 'Animalier' sculptor of the 19th century, whose work is comparable with the French 'Animalier' masters of the period. During his short but prolific career he concentrated on studies of hunting scenes, namely hounds and horses, with or without riders.Sadly, at the age of 34, after only ten years exhibiting his work, he shot himself in his studio on the Fulham Road, London. Perhaps for this reason we know very little about him today other than he took a probationary course in the schools of the Royal Academy and later studied under the celebrated Austrian-born sculptor, Joseph Edgar Boehm Boehm (1834-1890). Between 1870 and 1878 he exhibited sixteen pieces at the Royal Academy and on one occasion collaborated on a work with Charles Lutyens, himself a well-known sporting painter who also produced several sculptures.Willis Good's sculptures were justifiably popular during his lifetime and were produced in bronze, sterling silver and silver-plated bronze, often by Elkington & Co. of Birmingham. His last work was a series of studies of hounds, and he became increasingly interested in the patination of his work which he began to carry out himself. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

(1894-1977), grandfather of the current owner and vendor. One of the offered chairs appears illustrated in R. Edwards and P. Macquoid, The Dictionary of English Furniture, Vol. II, the revised and enlarged edition by R. Edwards, 2000, New York, fig. 90, p. 256. The chair is even noted in 'The Dictionary' as being: 'from Mr Ralph Edwards' and is dated to circa 1710.Ralph EdwardsAlthough principally renowned for The Dictionary of English Furniture, his most influential book first published in the period 1924-1927, Ralph Edwards was also an art historian, academic, connoisseur, author and collector within various fields of the fine and decorative arts. His genuinely eclectic yet thorough knowledge included, but was not limited to, subjects as diverse as: European paintings, watercolours, Hogarth, Old Master drawings, bronze sculpture, needleworks, porcelain, silver and English miniatures. Nonetheless his foremost area of expertise was undoubtedly in English furniture.Following his involvement in World War I, and despite successfully completing the necessary professional legal examinations, Ralph Edwards joined Country Life magazine as a member of their editorial team, where he remained for five years. The motivations behind this career-defining decision are a mystery, however as Nicholas Goodison writes in his superb 1978 obituary it was clear that on this occasion: '...art history gained what the law lost.' N. Goodison, 'Obituary, Ralph Edwards', The Burlington Magazine, May 1978, Vol. 120, No. 902, 'Special Issue Devoted to the Victoria and Albert Museum', p. 316.Throughout 1924 and 1925, Edwards continued in this capacity at Country Life at the same time as working closely with Percy Macquoid (1852-1925) on compiling and creating what would thereafter become their seminal work, The Dictionary of English Furniture. Only one year later, Edwards took up the position of Assistant in the Department of Woodwork at the Victoria and Albert Museum, eventually being promoted to Keeper of that Department in 1937. In total he would retain this significant role for seventeen years until retiring, albeit apparently somewhat reluctantly, in 1954.    During his tenure as Keeper at the Victoria and Albert, Ralph produced a number of books and articles concerning furniture, typically with particular attention to the history of English furniture. Arguably among the most notable of these were; a brief analysis of English chairs in the museum collection; Georgian Cabinet-Makers, which he assembled together with Margaret Jourdain in 1944; and the three volume revised edition of 'The Dictionary', eventually published in 1954. In his obituary on Edwards, Nicholas Goodison brilliantly encapsulated his primary achievement as Keeper in the Department of Woodwork:'In this role he [Edwards] did a great deal to raise the study of furniture from an inconspicuous to an important branch of the decorative arts.'N. Goodison, Ibid, p. 316.In spite of his retirement from the Victoria and Albert, that same year Ralph Edwards started to accept employment - essentially as a kind of senior consultant - with the Historic Buildings Councils of England and Wales. His invaluable aiding of these Councils lasted a staggering twenty-one years. At the same time, Edwards' output of publications persisted and this is exemplified by; the appearance in 1955 of the third version of Georgian Cabinet-Makers; a 1963 condensed single volume edition of his by then widely celebrated 'Dictionary'; and an almost continual provision of furniture-related articles. Added to this, for two years Ralph Edwards assisted in the editing process for the Connoisseur Period Guides (1956-1958). Yet, regardless of this huge workload he was always available to help the Arts Council and other official bodies whenever requested or required to do so.Aside from this specialist study in the realm of furniture, it is incredible to consider that Edwards was additionally responsible for literature on an assortment of other visual arts topics. For example he finished Early Conversation Pieces in 1954 which was a survey of the progression of what are generally referred to as 'conversation paintings', beginning in the medieval period and concluding with examples from the early 18th century.Evidently over the last two decades of his life there was much less focusing on the study of furniture which allowed his wide-ranging proficiency in many of the other decorative arts to flourish. Though it is difficult to know whether this was an intentional move away from his main specialism, it was perhaps inevitable given the nature of his involvement with the Historic Buildings Council and the National Museum of Wales. Edwards' participation with both of these groups led him to investigate virtually all manner of artefacts. Over the course of the twelve years prior to his death in 1977 he also formed a fundamental part of the advisory panel for The Burlington Magazine.Overall, Ralph Edwards' enormous influence on the way in which serious art historical research has been, and continues to be, undertaken is not something that can be easily overstated. Ralph was one of the earliest scholars to confirm factual information pertaining to objects by means of uncovering sources contemporary to them. In this process he was instrumental in bringing to the public consciousness numerous craftsmen, makers and artists, ranging from those who had fallen into complete obscurity to more major and more widely known figures. This was the technique pursued with regards to both The Dictionary of English Furniture and Georgian Cabinet-Makers, despite claims that he later opined that there had become too much emphasis upon the analysis of historical letters and invoices. It is alleged that his subsequent view was that this strict and narrow approach had caused furniture history to become too dry and mundane an affair, possibly more akin to a lifeless regurgitation of old account books than a true labour of love. However it is not clear to what extent he believed this had already happened. An exceptional memory for country houses and their contents meant that Ralph Edwards was almost always able to accurately date a work of art or object, and more often than not suggest an attribution to a certain artist or maker where relevant and possible. His natural affinity for British and European history, allied to his supreme level of connoisseurship, has meant that even today he maintains his position among the very highest echelons of academia within the broad domain that is art history.

This technique gives the impression of a three dimensional object or floating image encapsulated in the cabochon, especially when viewed from above. The process of carving into the back of the cabochon is referred to as a 'reverse carved intaglio' and this process was created in the 1860s, in what is known as the 'High Victorian Era'. This was a time of increased prosperity and as a consequence there was a higher demand for jewels, eye-catching adornment and novelty items. Peter Hinks in Nineteenth Century Jewellery observes that 'a new adventurousness in the treatment of gems' was very much present in the 1860s and 70s, with reverse carved intaglios one of the most adventurous! For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

ROYAL INTEREST: a George III inlaid silver and lacquer snuff box and associated itemsunmarked, circa 1790 Of curved rectangular form, with a hinged cover, the whole inlaid with silver and filigree work, together with a photograph of Admiral Sir Basil Vernon Brooke K.C.V.O. in uniform and an unsigned handwritten letter of provenance believed to be written by Marian Crawford 'Crawfie', governess to Princess Elizabeth (the future Queen) and Princess Margaret. (3)Footnotes:ProvenanceThe framed photo, snuff-box and accompanying handwritten letter of provenance, were allegedly consigned directly into auction by Marian Crawford's own family. This particular lot originally came up for sale at Taylors auction house in Montrose, Scotland, on Saturday 10th November 2012 in the 'Paintings, Porcelain, Furniture, Marine, Militaria, Ethnic Art & Coin Sale', under Lot 1250. The three items above were then subsequently sold to Blackwood Antiques in late 2012, and have changed hands several times since.Marian Crawford 'Crawfie' (1909–1988) In 1932 Marion Crawford moved from Fife to the heart of the Royal Household, acting as governess for the future Queen Elizabeth and Princess Margaret when they were just little girls. Tall, strict and kindly, she stayed for 17 years and 'Crawfie', as they fondly called her, was not only their teacher, but their constant confidante and companion.Crawfie guided the girls through the drama of the abdication of their uncle, the upheaval of their parents' accession and the trauma of the Second World War. She took shelter with them both at Birkhall on the Balmoral Estate in Aberdeenshire, and also within Windsor Castle's dungeon bomb shelters. Subsequently she was also on the scene when Elizabeth first met Philip. Yet, at the end of her service, the royals cut her off. The reason? A harmless memoir, 'The Little Princesses'. Crawfie's own account of life with the princesses is now all but forgotten, but in 1950 it was a US-UK sensation and her discreet and loving memoir saw her punished for the rest of her life; ostracised from the Royal Family forever. This letter of provenance, purportedly in Crawfie's own hand and written in April 1982 in her dotage, relates to her friendship with Admiral Sir Basil Vernon Brooke K.C.V.O., who was Head of the Royal Household during the Second World War. In precis, Crawfie writes that the Admiral sent her his precious snuff box and photograph (also included in this lot), a month before his death. She attached this testimony to the back of his photograph and recalls her friendship with him. She states that he had carried this snuff box with him his whole adult life, 'going all over the world with him, through many naval battles ... During the first 6 months of the last war he and I were incarcerated in Birkhall with the Princesses - no one could have been so wonderful, and so proud to be chosen by the King to guard his daughters. He was much loved by the King and Queen - known to everyone as 'B.V'. He thought there was no one in the world to compare with Princess Elizabeth. We had such fun at Birkhall inspite of Hitler and Lord Haw Haw! 'Lilibet' was not at the 'coming down to dinner stage' but spent an hour each evening with B.V. who taught her all sorts of card games ... One evening we were highly elated over a big naval victory so B.V. drank champagne from my pink evening slipper!!! Now at 72 that really warms my heart and makes me think of gracious living and romantic times.'For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
