This design was commissioned by Diaghilev in Berlin, in 1914, to promote the Ballet Russe in the Illustrated London News for the forthcoming London season. Because Bakst's original drawings could not be sent through the mail due to the war, so were produced and inscribed with his 'signature' with his and Diaghilev's approval.
