Shetland Islands--Rattar, J.D.. A bit of old Lerwick; The Nill Road; Morning, Shetland; Evening, Shetland; Sandwick, Hillswick; 5 silver prints by J.D. Rattar, each signed and captioned in pencil, the last three coloured and mounted, the first two framed and glazed, image size 23 x 30cm. (5) . Note: J. D. Rattar (1876-1957), born at Fedaland, Northmavine, was the most well known of Shetland's pre-1950 photographers. Jack, like others of his surname, was born Ratter. However early in his career as a professional photographer he adopted the spelling Rattar. . His work included postcards, mounted and unmounted photos and souvenir photos in packs, his earliest photos being photographs of the Fedaland haaf station in 1890/92. After Rattar's death his widow bequeathed his negatives, slides, enlarger and other items to the Zetland County Council. [Cluness, A.T. "A Time to Keep", Scots Magazine, Feb. and Mar. 1957]

An album of approx. 150 gelatin silver print photos, c. 1913-16, including local peoples and the views, motoring and motorcycling interest, all uncaptioned, though first page titled Fred Joy in Japan, approx. 10 x 8 cm and similar, remains of old album marks to versos, inserted into a modern plastic album, 4to (1)
* China, Japan & Vietnam. A collection of approx. 280 gelatin silver photographs and compact prints, c. July 1905 to June 1907, including street scenes, views, temples, festivals, arrivals and departures of military troops (French, German, Japanese, Chinese, British & American), relating to Tientsin, Tonkin, Kyoto, Yokohama, Nara, Osaka, Shimonoseki, plus a few of Tokyo, Ceylon, Aden, etc., many identified and dated in pencil in French to versos, some images referring to the departure of General Kamio and also General Lefevre, and one showing a train with the distant figure of Miss Roosevelt [President Roosevelt's daughter] e -route to Tonkin, all loose, approx. 9 x 12 cm. The identity of the French photographer is not evident. He or she was presumably working in and/or travelling in French Indochina and nearby territories during this period. (approx. 280)
* Churchill (Rt. Hon. Winston S., 1874-1965). A group of thirty-nine good quality gelatin silver print photographs of Sir Winston and Lady Churchill and their family home at Chartwell, Westerham, Kent, [1951], all taken by Harold David John Cole, F.R.P.S. and former president of the Royal Photographic Society, eight images showing Sir Winston and Lady Churchill seated on an outdoor swing chair with their grandchildren, one of Sir Winston and Lady Churchill alone, five further photographs of Sir Winston Churchill including two of him seated in his library with a book, four more family related photographs, two of cat on a window-sill, and seventy mostly exterior shots of Chartwell without people, though one showing two gardeners hoeing next to a wheelbarrow with the initials W.S.C., plus five duplicate photos from the same series, all with the photographer's copyright stamp and address to versos, images approx. 18 x 19 cm and similar. Provenance: From the photographer's daughter. Full copyright to these images will transfer to the buyer of this lot with relevant paperwork. The negatives have been lost but should they ever come to light they will be forwarded to the new owner of the copyright. (44)

* Japan. An album of approx. 170 gelatin silver print photographs, mostly c. 1920s/30s (but a few sl. earlier), originally belonging to Hugo Rogers, a banker working in Kobe and Yokohama in Japan, including scenes of a ship launch, sporting events, an earthquake, masonic interest, social life, scenery, etc., and including one regimental photograph and one album print photograph of a large group of Japanese people standing and seated on the ground, approx. 20 x 25 cm and smaller, largely mounted on album leaves and some captioned on mounts, orig. limp cloth, binding broken and leaves det., oblong folio. Hugo Rogers is believed to have been inturned in a Prisoner of War Camp during World War II in Hong Kong. He was a Captain in the Gordon Highlanders during World War I. (1)
