At the beginning of the 20th Century Limbdi was a princely state under the indirect rule of the British Empire in India. Colonel His Highness Thakore Sahib Shri Sir Daulatsinhji Jashwantsinhji, born in 1868, is believed to have been a very able ruler dedicated to the progression of his state and is recorded as ruling from 1907 to 1940.He received numerous medals including the Delhi Durbar Silver in 1903 which is possibly depicted within the enamel portrait of the current lot. Also featured in the portrait is a gem set jigha, traditionally worn exclusively by the emperor, his family and entourage. This elaborate creation evolved from the earlier Mughal practice of pinning a heron's feather or kalgi to the front of the turban. His Highness was also made a Knights Commander of the Most Exalted Order of the Star of India in 1931, the second highest class of the Order of the Star India and was a patron of many societies.
