'Of all the scenes photographed in the Antarctic, that of Mt Erebus in eruption was the most difficult to secure. It would have been folly to attempt to drag the heavy apparatus up the volcano's side, but by stroke of good luck and through the special telephoto-lens, taken along especially to film events at a distance, a remarkably clear picture was obtained of this sudden volcano in action', Herbert Ponting, 'The Student's Journal', 42(10), 1913, p.328.
