A 13th Century Zoomorphic Silver-Gilt Book MountA silver-gilt book mount depicting two Romanesque style leopards. The leopards are depicted with heads turned backwards and biting their own tails. A rear leg of each animal extends backwards and they meet to form a loop. A front paw of each animal is extended forwards and rests upon the ends of the strap bar. The back-plate on the reverse has a circular perforation which would have located over a pin on the cover of a book, preventing it from opening and protecting the interior. The Romanesque style was popular in England throughout the 12th Century and into the early 13th Century and was used to great effect in the illuminated manuscripts and bibles of the period, the covers of which were graced with elaborate fittings such as this beautifully modelled piece.26mm x 19mm/9.4gRecorded with the Portable Antiques Scheme; LVPL-76DB10
