Franz von StuckA silver plated Nautilus cupStamped WMFon an ebonised wooden baseOverall 51.5cm high CONDITION REPORT: Von Ostini records that the Nautilus was one of the first sculptural works created by Stuck, pre-dating the Glaspalast exhibition in Munich in 1892 (when he displayed the famous Athlet) and finding its origins in two illustrations that Stuck designed in the 1880s: firstly a drawing for the Allegorien und Embleme portfolio published by Gerlach & Schenk, Vienna 1882/84, vol. 2, no. 82; and secondly for a calendar illustration for the month of October published in the Fliegende Blatter, 1889, no. 2306.Stuck himself owned a bronze version of the present model which mounted a real nautilus shell and appears as a prop in some of his paintings. It stood on his living-room cabinet until 1909 (see Bierbaum, op. cit., p. 79). The present version was executed by WMF, Geislingen.

A Fine Cased Pair Of 28-Bore Flintlock Duelling PistolsBy Robert Wogdon, Circa 1780With browned swamped octagonal barrels signed along the top flat and each with bent bore, engraved with a transverse band of beadwork at the rear of the breech and with silver fore-sight, case-hardened foliate engraved tangs each decorated with a band of beadwork en suite in front of the back-sight, signed case-hardened flat bevelled detented locks and cocks, the former each retained by two screws and with safety-catch and blued steel-spring, figured full stocks (minor old repair above the front of one lock) with swelling flat-sided butts, blued border engraved steel-mounts comprising butt-caps each decorated with foliage on the tang and with a flower-head centred on the retaining screw, trigger-guards (one with some loss of blueing) each with acorn finial and decorated with a flower-head on the bow, turned ramrod-pipes, set triggers, small silver escutcheons on each side flat engraved with owner's initial 'L, original ramrods, one with horn tip, the other with threaded brass powder-measure and iron worm, and retaining most of their original finish: in original lined and fitted oak case with later brass-mounted powder-flask, turnscrew with pricker, and combined loading/cleaning rod, the exterior of the lid with brass carrying handle of Chippendale form, London proof marks and Wogdon's barrelsmith's mark 24 cm. barrelsFootnotes:ProvenanceAcquired from R.J. Delany, Londini, Early 18th CenturyWith three-stage barrel flared at the muzzle and signed in capitals along the top of the breech, plain tang, signed round lock, artificially figured rootwood full stock with raised apron around the barrel tang, border engraved brass mounts comprising flat scroll side-plate with foliate tail, shaped vacant escutcheon, butt-plate with long sharply tapering tang and decorated with strawberry foliage on the heel, trigger-guard decorated en suite and with trefoil-shaped finial, baluster rear ramrod-pipe, the other plain, and later ramrod, London proof marks and indistinct barrelsmith's mark 38.2 cm. barrel Footnotes:Henry Delany (or Delaney), a Huguenot, was admitted to the freedom of the Gunmakers' Company in 1715.
