A striking Chinese Export silver four piece tea and coffee service, maker's mark for Chonghang Shanghai, each piece elaborately decorated with figures and pavilions against a stippled ground, the tea and coffee pots with domed handles and dragon head knops, each handle cast as a scrolling dragon, monogrammed to each piece and the coffee pot bearing the inscription "Presented to Mr. J. Cruickshank on the Occasion of his Marriage from his fellow County Men in the S.M.P., March 12th 1910". 69 troy ounces. Note: James Cruickshank, to whom this service was given, was born in Aberdeen and joined the Shanghai Municipal Police Force ("S.M.P") in 1905, retiring as a Detective Superintendent in 1926. The S.M.P. were the police force of the Shanghai Municipal Council which governed the International Settlement between 1854 and 1943 when the settlement was returned to Chinese control.
