EINSTEIN ELSA: (1876-1936) Cousin and the second wife of Albert Einstein, married from 1919-36. A brief A.L.S., Elsa Einstein, one page, 8vo, n.p., n.d. (c.1933), to a lady, most probably Juliette Adant, wife of Professor Arthur de Groodt, in French. Einstein writes, in full, 'Cette petite boite (mosaigue en bois) represente une faible preuve de ma gratitude' (Translation: 'This little box (wooden mosaic) represents a feeble proof of my gratitude'). Together with two original 3.5 x 2.5 and 4.5 x 3 photographs showing different views of the same house, possibly situated in De Haan, Belgium. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, VG, 3Juliette De Groodt-Adant (1892-1964) Belgian writer, wife of the Flemish doctor Arthur de Groodt (1883-1952). In March 1933 Albert and Elsa Einstein returned to Europe from America and learned that Hitler had seized power and that the Gestapo had raided their Berlin apartment, confiscating many possessions. Landing in Antwerp, Belgium, Albert Einstein immediately visited the German consulate and surrendered his passport, formally renouncing his German citizenship. At the invitation of Arthur de Groodt and his wife (who counted Rabindranath Tagore amongst their friends) Albert and Elsa Einstein stayed for a few days at Cantecroy Castle before Juliette De Groodt-Adant suggested that they hire two cottages in De Haan, the Villa Savoyarde for the Einsteins and the Maisonette for themselves. The Einstein's stayed in the West Flanders municipality for six months before departing for London in September 1933.
BELLONTE MAURICE: (1896-1983) French pioneer aviator who, with Dieudonne Costes, completed the first westbound crossing of the North Atlantic from Paris to New York, September 1930. Autograph draft of a letter, unsigned, one page, 4to, n.p., 6th August 1937, to Louis Couhe, in French. The retained draft is written on feint squared graph paper and contains various corrections, stating that he is forwarding a copy of a letter which he had sent to the Minister for Air and further remarking ´Je profite de l´occasion pour vous remercier de la lettre me concernant que vous avez recemment adressee a Monsieur [Jean] Moulin et du point de vue que vous y avez expose a mon egard´ (Translation: ´I take this opportunity to thank you for the letter concerning me that you recently sent to Mr [Jean] Moulin and for the point of view you expressed about me in it´). Some very light, extremely minor age wear, VGLouis Couhe (1889-1979) French politician who flew as a Lieutenant during World War I and later served as Secretary General of the Air Ministry as well as Director of Air France Transatlantique. Jean Moulin (1899-1943) French civil servant who served as the first President of the National Council of the Resistance during World War II and is remembered as one of the main heroes of the French Resistance. At the time of the present letter Moulin was employed at the Air Ministry under Pierre Cot.
MACDONALD JAMES RAMSAY: (1866-1937) British Prime Minister 1924, 1929-35. An excellent T.L.S., J. Ramsay MacDonald, two pages, 4to, The Hillocks, Lossiemouth (although on the printed stationery of the Prime Minister, 10 Downing Street, Whitehall), 30th December 1931, to Ernest J. Titler of the Shaftesbury Advertising Agency Ltd., marked Private & Confidential. MacDonald states ´The paragraphs that have been appearing in the newspapers, especially in the "Daily Herald", that I am trying to go back to the Labour Party, and have appointed emissaries to make soundings, are rather embarrassing and untrue. They have been repeated, however, in a tone which indicates that the writers have got something in their minds´, and continues ´If I were clear of my immediate burdens I should show them that in spite of their excommunications I am a member of the Labour movement, and would defy them and all their caucuses to turn me out of it. But what I should do would be to try to get the movement back to its proper position, and rescue it from being a glorified board of guardians´, before concluding ´The Labour Party has been misled, and is being kept misinformed by two of the most disreputable papers now published, the Herald and Reynolds. That is what I want to rectify in the interests of the whole movement´. Accompanied by the original envelope. A letter of fine political content. Together with a second, earlier T.L.S., J. Ramsay MacDonald, one page, 4to, 10 Downing Street, Whitehall, 11th March 1931, also to Ernest J. Titler, on the printed stationery of the Prime Minister. MacDonald states that he has received the programme for Titler´s concert, and wishes that he could attend, however explaining ´....the House of Commons will be sitting that evening and Government business taken, and no doubt there will be Divisions. I am afraid it would be impossible for me to leave the ship in those circumstances.....´. Also including Ishbel MacDonald (1903-1982) eldest daughter of Ramsay MacDonald and the hostess of 10 Downing Street during her father´s time in office. A.L.S., Ishbel, one page, 4to, Upper Frognal Lodge, Hampstead, London, 17th November 1937, to Ernest [Titler], on black bordered mourning stationery. Writing shortly after the death of her father, MacDonald thanks her correspondent for their kind letter and messages of sympathy and continues ´If you and your mother or father would like to go to the Abbey get in touch with Alister [her brother].....or just chance it. The Abbey will be open to the public´, accompanied by a second A.L.S.. Ishbel, two pages, 4to, Upper Frognal Lodge, Hampstead, London, 19th November 1937, also to Titler and on black bordered mourning stationery, stating that she had written her previous letter too soon and explaining ´Since making our first list we have been told that it is too long, and we have had to cut it right down to little more than relatives. The National Labour executive is being asked with official people, and everyone else has to take their chance. The greater part of the Abbey will be unreserved seats, so you are not cut out, but you will see that it is not possible for us to reserve seats......I am terribly sorry.....Do forgive me´. Accompanied by the original envelope. Further including an interesting, small group of printed ephemera and letters (2) relating to Ramsay MacDonald and his family, including T.Ls.S. by MacDonald´s private secretary Rose Rosenberg, and Parliamentary Private Secretary Frank Markham, two official unsigned 10 Downing Street Christmas greetings cards from Ramsay MacDonald, 1933/34 and 1934/35, a printed National Labour Committee menu for a luncheon to meet Ramsay MacDonald, Stanley Baldwin and John Simon at the Trocadero Restaurant in London on 6th November 1933, two pieces relating to the marriage of Joan Margaret MacDonald with a reception at Chequers, 20th September 1932, etc. Some light age wear and minor faults, G to generally VG, 13

WOUK HERMAN: (1915-2019) American author remembered for The Caine Mutiny (1951), for which he won the Pulitzer Prize in fiction. A brief A.L.S., Herman Wouk, to one side of his personal printed postcard, Washington D.C., 6th February 1971, to Candy and Stephen Brook. Wouk, a habitual hat-wearer, writes, in full, ´It was a pleasure to have you at the famous Fete du Chapeau. I hope we´ll all celebrate another in a couple of years´. Hand addressed by Wouk to the verso. SPECIAL OPERATIONS EXECUTIVE: A multiple signed Royal Air Forces Escaping Society commemorative cover by four RAF Westland Lysander pilots who served with the S.O.E. during World War II, flying agents in and out of France and Belgium, comprising Air Chief Marshal Lewis Hodges, Group Captain Peter Vaughan-Fowler, Squadron Leader Frank Rymills, and Flight-Lieutenant Peter Arkell. Also signed by Group Captain W. S. O. Randle of the RAF Escaping Society. All have signed with their names alone in bold blue and black inks to largely clear areas of the cover. Post marked at RAF Northolt, 25th May 1980. Together with a colour printed 4to magazine article, neatly removed from the September 2002 edition of Aeroplane magazine, being a special feature on Air Chief Marshal Lewis Hodges and signed by him in blue ink to a light area at the head of the title page. A scarce signed 8 x 10 photograph of Coco standing in a three-quarter length pose in costume as the aging silent movie comedy actor Jolly Grimm from the American comedy-drama film The Wild Party (1975). A pencil note in the hand of a collector to the verso indicates that the signature was obtained in person following Coco´s stage appearance in Monsters on 29th April 1977 (at the Astor Place Theatre, New York). HILGENFELDT ERICH: (1897-1945) German Nazi Party government official and SS-Gruppenfuhrer of World War II who served as Leader of the National Socialist People's Welfare 1931-45. D.S., Hilgenfeldt, one page, oblong 12mo, Berlin, 18th April 1942, in German. The black, red and gold partially printed document, completed in manuscript, is a Honorary Membership card for the National Socialist People's Welfare issued to Dr. Brockmann-Rohne on the tenth anniversary of its founding. Signed by Hilgenfeldt in bold fountain pen ink to the base of the card alongside an official circular stamp featuring the Nazi eagle and swastika. Some very light, minimal age wear, VG
DELACROIX EUGENE: (1798-1863) French artist of the Romantic school. A.L.S., Eug. Delacroix, one page, 8vo, n.p., 2nd January 1859, to a friend, in French. Delacroix announces 'J'apprends que vous decorez la croix qui decore tout d'imbeciles' (Translation: 'I hear that you decorate the cross which decorates everything with imbeciles') and continues 'C'est a moi meme comme vous pensez bien que j'ai fais compliment en attendant le plaisir de vous embrasser por vous dire que je vous desire aussi heureux que vous meritez de l'etre' (Translation: 'It is to myself, as you can imagine, that I paid my compliment while waiting for the pleasure of embracing you to tell you that I want you to be as happy as you deserve to be'), and concludes by remarking that after they had dined together 'j'ai ete repris d'une espece de grippe foudroyant qui m'est tombe de je ne sais ou, mais qui s'est passee comme elle est venue' (Translation: 'I was seized by a kind of lightning flu which fell on me from I don't know where, but which happened as it came'). HUMBOLDT ALEXANDER VON: (1769-1859) German polymath, geographer, naturalist and explorer. A.L.S., Ht, an abbreviated form of his surname, two pages, small 8vo, n.p., n.d., to Monsieur Pitois, in French. Humboldt writes to offer his correspondent a lithograph ´qui vous fera quelque plaisir´ (Translation: ´which will give you some pleasure´) and asks if he will take two others to Strasbourg and, if possible, send them to Messrs. Lombard and Voltz, remarking ´C´est une speculation un peu hazardee d´un jeune artiste rempli de talent eleve de M. Gerard´ (Translation: ´This is a rather hazardous speculation by a talented young artist, a pupil of Mr Gerard´) and further stating ´La gravure est faite apres un beau portrait que M. Steube a du faire pour le Comte Voronzov Gouverneur d´Odessa´ (Translation: ´The engraving is made after a beautiful portrait that Mr. Steube must have made for Count Voronzov Governor of Odessa´). O´NEILL EUGENE: (1888-1953) American playwright, Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1936. A.L.S., Gene O´Neill, one page, slim 4to, Provincetown, Massachusetts, n.d., to Jeanie Begg. O´Neill thanks his correspondent for her kind note, which he had been pleased to receive, and continues ´And all my best wishes for your future. Keep after Hopkins. Unfortunately there is nothing in "The Fountain" or "Welded" (this latter has only four characters) - but I know there will be sometime´. Some very light, minimal age wear, VGThe Fountain and Welded were two full-length plays written by O´Neill in 1923 and 1924 respectively.
PISSARRO CAMILLE: (1830-1903) French Impressionist painter. A.L.S., C. Pissarro, two pages, 8vo, Hotel d'Angleterre, Rouen, 14th September 1898, to his wife ('Ma Chere Julie'), in French. Pissarro writes on family and domestic matters, explaining that he has written to their son, Rodolphe, 'je lui recommende fortement la gymnastique et je lui dis aussi qu'il ne faut pas qu'il s'attarde a Londres' (Translation: 'strongly recommending gymnastics and telling him not to linger in London'), further providing the address of Joseph Lanegin and reminding his wife to ask a carpenter to fix the lock on a case, also making a reference to another of their sons, 'Georges est ici, il a commence une grande toile de la rue de l'epicerie' (Translation: 'Georges is here, he has begun a large painting of the rue de l'epicerie') before concluding by referring to their two youngest children, 'Embrasses Paul et Cocotte, dis a Cocotte que j'ai des cartes postales de Rouen pour elle, je lui enverai cela' (Translation: 'Give my love to Paul and Cocotte, and tell Cocotte that I have some postcards from Rouen for her, and I will send them to her'). Some very light, extremely minor age wear, VGIn 1871 Pissarro had married his mother's maid, Julie Vellay, with whom he had seven children. Six would become painters and the four children referred to in the present letter are Georges Henri Manzana Pissarro (1871-1961), Ludovic-Rodo Pissarro (1878-1952), Jeanne 'Cocotte' Bonin-Pissarro (1881-1948) and Paul-Emile Pissarro (1884-1972).In his older age Pissarro began painting outdoor scenes while sitting by the window of hotel rooms in French cities including Rouen. It was whilst in this city, situated on the River Seine in the Normandy area of northern France, that Pissarro (as well as his son) painted the Rue de l'Epicerie in 1898.
[DREYFUS AFFAIR]: MORNARD HENRY (1859-1928) French lawyer who first represented Lucie Dreyfus in 1894 and later for Alfred Dreyfus at the retrial in Rennes in September 1899. A.L.S., with his initials H. M., to the recto and verso of his personal printed oblong 12mo Visiting Card, featuring his printed name to the centre, as a Doctor of Law and Lawyer at the Council of State and the Court of Cassation, and with his address at Boulevard Raspail (Paris) to the base, n.d., to [Fernand Labori], in French. Mornard writes, in full, ´Je suis heureux de vous feliciter mon cher ami, non pas de votre reelection qui n´etait pas douteuse, mais de la belle manifestation de sympathie qu´elle a constituee a votre egard. Je ne suis pas votre electeur...mais je vote tout de meme de tout coeur pour le batonnier Labori´ (Translation: ´I am delighted to congratulate you, my dear friend, not on your re-election, which was not in doubt, but on the wonderful show of sympathy it has given you. I am not your elector... but I am nevertheless voting wholeheartedly for President Labori´). An excellent association piece between the two principal defenders of Alfred Dreyfus. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, VGFernand Labori (1860-1917) French attorney whose clients included both Emile Zola and Alfred Dreyfus.
NEWCASTLE DUKE OF: (1693-1768) British Prime Minister 1754-56, 1757-62 & NORTH LORD: (1732-1792) British Prime Minister 1770-82. North led Great Britain through most of the American War of Independence. A good D.S. by both the Duke of Newcastle ('Holles Newcastle') and Lord North ('North') individually, one page, folio, Whitehall Treasury Chambers, 29th June 1759. The manuscript document is addressed to the Commissioners of His Majesty's Customs in Scotland and approves the application of John Taylor, a Landwaiter and Searcher at Port Glasgow, to be absent from his duty for three months, also directing 'that no deduction shall be made from the salary of the said John Taylor on account of his absence during that time provided you have no objection thereto'. Also countersigned at the foot by Robert Nugent (1709-1788) 1st Earl Nugent. Irish politician & poet, Lord Commissioner of the Treasury 1754-59. Some very light, extremely minor age wear and a small tear at the centre, neatly repaired to the verso and not affecting any of the signatures. About VG
HUSSEIN SADDAM: (1937-2006) President of Iraq 1979-2003. A.L.S., in Arabic, one page, 8vo, n.p. (Republican Palace, Baghdad?), 27th November 1990, to the press secretary of the Foreign Minister, on printed stationery featuring the coat of arms of Iraq, in Arabic. Hussein gives directions in response 'to the accusations of the traitor of the two Holy Mosques [King] Fahd, as he claims that if it were not for Saudi Arabia and its support for Iraq, then Iran would have defeated us', remarking 'Forgetting the convoys of martyrs who fell in defence of Iraq and the Arab nation, especially the Gulf countries that you plotted and are plotting against us at this moment'. Two file holes to the right edge and a couple of small holes and light creasing to the upper edge, otherwise VGFahd bin Abdulaziz Al Saud (1921-2005) King and Prime Minister of Saudi Arabia 1982-2005. After ascending the throne in 1982 King Fahd spent considerable sums in supporting Saddam Hussein's Baathist Iraq in its war against Iran, fearing that the 1979 Revolution in Iran could lead to similar Islamic upheaval in Saudi Arabia. Less than a decade later, in 1990, Iraqi forces under Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait, placing the Iraqi army (the largest in the Middle East at the time) on the Saudi-Kuwait border. During the Gulf War that followed King Fahd agreed to host American-led coalition troops in his Kingdom and later allowed American troops to be based there, a decision which brought him considerable criticism and opposition.

[BATTLE OF BRITAIN]: FARMER JAMES N. W.: (1915-1999) British fighter pilot of World War II who participated in the Battle of Britain. D.S., J N Farmer, one page, 4to, n.p. (RAF Duxford, Cambridgeshire?), 18th September 1940. The partially printed document, completed in Farmer's hand, in pencil, is a Combat Report (Form "F", marked Secret) providing details of one of the pilot's aerial engagements involving the destruction of a Junkers Ju 88 and possibly a Dornier Do 17 over the Thames estuary during the Battle of Britain, the General Report stating, in part, ´I was leader of Yellow Section & attached in flight vic, from line astern of Red leader. I attacked a Do: 215 (or 17) with my initial burst.....I broke away to the west and chased a Ju 88 which had left the formation and gave it the remaining rounds. Pieces flew off it and it dived into a cloud.....I did not see it again either above or below the cloud´. One file hole to the upper edge, just affecting one word of printed text, and with a few minor, very light creases. VG
CHAPLIN CHARLES: (1889-1977) English film comedian, Academy Award winner. A wonderful, large vintage signed 9 x 13 photograph of Chaplin, the image depicting the young, dapper actor seated in a three-quarter length pose. Photograph by the Strauss Peyton Studios and bearing their white facsimile credit (and dated of 1921) in the negative to the lower right corner and with a further credit stamp to the verso. Signed ('Truly, Chas Chaplin') by Chaplin in bold, dark fountain pen ink to a light area at the base of the image. An extremely rare A.L.S., 'with love, Ethel & R' (also on behalf of Reginald), two pages (separate leaves), small 4to, 10 Rillington Place, St. Marks Road, London, 17th March 1951, to her sister, Lily Bartle. Christie states that she has just received a letter from their Auntie ´in which she tells me what the specialist said´, continuing ´Why did you not write & tell me. I am very worried about you & if you would like me to come up to Sheffield Reg says that he can manage alright´, further explaining ´I could come up for 3 weeks & then I have to attend at the West London Court as I have summonsed one of the coloured men for assault. I am much better now (I was returning from shopping & he smacked me on the face) & after the case has been heard on the 14th April I could come up again´. VISCONTI LOUIS: (1791-1853) Italian-born French architect and designer, most famous for having designed the tomb of Napoleon at Les Invalides (1842). A.L.S., L Visconti, four pages, 8vo, n.p., 23rd July 1850, to a friend, in French. Visconti writes a largely social letter, explaining that he could not wait any longer to send his friend news, and informing him ´ Je ne sors pas des bains des douches & je ne dirai pas que je suis heureux comme un poisson dans l´eau car les jours de douches me semblent ces punitions du Dante, j´eu recoir cent, et le resultat est que les douleurs s´en vont avec la vie, car je ne puis presque me tenir sur mes jambes, les medecins disent tant mieux.......peut etre ont ils raison l´avenir le decidera ou en sont les marbres; car je vous dirai mon cher......que le corps est ici et la tete vous savez ou´ (Translation: ´ I don't get out of the baths and showers & I wouldn't say that I'm as happy as a fish in water because shower days seem to me like Dante's punishments, I've had a hundred of them, and the result is that the pain goes with life, because I can hardly stand on my legs, the doctors say so much the better....... Perhaps they are right, the future will decide where the marbles are; for I will tell you my dear ...... that the body is here and the head you know where´), also referring to the Greek Gods and various mutual acquaintances before also remarking ´Je voudrais aller vous critiquer, mais j´aurais de la pline a trouver le defaut de la cuirasse car sans vous faire des compliment vous avez un instinct naturel qui est desesperant pour les perdants´ (Translation: ´I'd like to go and criticise you, but I'd be hard pressed to find the flaw in your armour because, without paying you any compliments, you have a natural instinct that is desperate for losers´) and also encouraging his friend to visit Visconti´s daughter as they are close and it would make her very happy. STRANGLERS THE: Signed 10 x 8 photograph by all five members of the English rock band The Stranglers individually, being a 1990s line-up comprising Jet Black, John Ellis, Jean-Jacques Burnel, Dave Greenfield and Paul Roberts, the image depicting the musicians standing together in a row in three-quarter length poses. LE CARRE JOHN: (1931-2020) British author of espionage novels. Signed colour 8 x 10 photograph of the novelist standing outdoors in a three-quarter length pose in Cornwall, with his home, Tregiffian Cottage, visible in the distance. PICASSO PABLO: (1881-1973) Spanish painter, a co-founder of the Cubist movement. A printed 8vo softcover copy of the exhibition catalogue for Picasso Paintings 1950-60 held at the Galerie Rosengart in Lucerne in the summer of 1961, featuring a brief essay in German and with sixteen plate illustrations (ten in colour) of Picasso´s paintings. To the title page Picasso has drawn a wonderful original bold purple and black crayon drawing of a bearded man´s head, boldly signing his name (´Picasso´) in black crayon immediately beneath the drawing and adding the date, 3rd February 1962, to the head of the page, also in bold black crayon. With the original printed paper covers featuring a drawing Picasso made especially for the exhibition catalogue. APOLLO X: The folio printed outer cover pages from an edition of the Daily Mirror newspaper of 27th May 1969 featuring the headline Oh, So Smooth!, with an image of the three crew members in half-length poses together on board the helicopter carrier Princeton following the conclusion of their mission and an article reporting on the eight-day journey, becoming the second spaceflight to orbit the moon, individually signed by the three crew members of Apollo X, comprising Thomas Stafford (1930-2024) American astronaut, Commander of the Apollo X mission, 1969; John Young (1930-2018) American astronaut, Command Module Pilot of the Apollo X mission, 1969, and later the ninth man to walk on the moon as Commander of the Apollo XVI mission, 1972; and Gene Cernan (1934-2017) American astronaut, Lunar Module Pilot of the Apollo X mission, 1969, and later the eleventh man to walk on the moon as Commander of the Apollo XVII mission, 1972. WELLS H.G.: (1866-1946) English writer, remembered for his science fiction novels. A good A.L.S., H. G. Wells, one page, small 4to, Easton Glebe, Dunmow, n.d. (annotated 1916 in another hand at the head), to Huntly Carter. Wells writes in response to Carter's letter in which the journalist had posed some questions to Wells, asking what his opinion of the industrial situation regarding Labour, capital and the nation as a commercial entity was, as well as the best policies to be followed. Wells answers by stating, in part, '1a Labour will be after some fool's grievance about the C[onscience] O[bjectors] or suchlike, under the guidance of Fenner Brockway, Ramsay MacDonald & so forth......Labour will be unaware that there is an economic problem. Labour will be sheep in a narrow road. 1b. Capital will be scrambling back towards the old conditions in a stupid instinctive way under cover of an Irish row. 1c. Nonsense! Do you mean economic? 2a. 2b. 2c. Think hard. But this is Utopian'. LEONCAVALLO RUGGERO: (1857-1919) Italian composer. A good A.M.Q.S., R. Leoncavallo, to the verso of his personal printed oblong 12mo Visiting Card, featuring his printed name (´R. Leoncavallo´) to the centre, Munich, 13th August 1894. Leoncavallo has penned two bars of music, with lyrics beneath, which he identifies as being from Act III of I Medici. Some very light, minor age wear to the edges of the recto, otherwise VGI Medici is an opera in four acts composed by Leoncavallo, with a libretto by the composer, which received its premiere at the Teatro Dal Verme in Milan on 6th November 1893. The opera is set in Renaissance Florence at the court of Lorenzo de´ Medici.
KOENIG WALTER: (1936- ) American actor. Signed 8 x 10 photograph of Koenig seated in a half-length pose, in costume from his most famous role as Ensign Pavel Chekov from the American science fiction television series Star Trek. Signed by Koenig in blue ink with his name alone to a largely light area at the centre of the image. EX
HANNA BARBERA: HANNA BILL (1910-2001) & BARBERA JOE (1911-2006) American animators. Co-founders of the animation studios Hanna-Barbera. SABU: (1924-1963) Indian actor. A good vintage signed and inscribed 8 x 10 photograph of Sabu in a head and shoulders pose in costume from perhaps his most famous role as Abu in the British historical fantasy film The Thief of Bagdad (1940). Signed in bold, dark blue fountain pen ink by Sabu to a light area at the base of the image. With the original printed caption neatly affixed to the verso. Signed photographs of Sabu of this size and quality are scarce, largely as a result of his untimely death at the age of 39. FAMOUS MEN & WOMEN: A good selection of A.Ls.S. by a variety of famous French men and women, most associated with the arts during the 19th century, including Tony Johannot (regarding the colourisation of an illustration), Joseph Thierry (a brief letter passing on the thanks of a friend to his brother), Adrien Dauzats (a lengthy letter announcing his imminent return to Paris after an exile in a cold, grey country, where he studied monuments for a long time but never conquered them), Philbert Rouviere (a good original signed self-portrait in pencil, with a brief quotation from William Shakespeare´s Hamlet), Henry Monnier (referring to a proposal from the publisher Dentu which he finds excellent), Charles Odry (manuscript receipt for four performances, 1841), Jean-Baptiste Provost (announcing that he will be absent for the next hunt, as he is on holiday in Switzerland), Charles-Edme Vernet (stating that he will leave the troupe des Varietes), Augustine Susanne Brohan (agreeing to an appointment for her daughter), Francois Desnoyer (two letters to the French artist and designer Christian Berard, in one making a reference to Berthe Weill´s gallery and the other written during the German occupation), Auguste Feyen-Perrin (two letters, one most probably written to the sculptor Ludovic Eugene Durand), Jacques Ibert (to the French librettist Albert Willemetz, 1953), Georges Ohnet (acceding to the request of a colleague), Pierre Puvis de Chavannes (brief letter to Edouard Dubufe regarding a general meeting), Jules Ziegler (regarding the cost of sewage works at Voisinlieu where Ziegler had established a sandstone vase factory) etc. Some light age wear and a few minor faults, generally G to VG, 26

Book signed, being a hardback edition of Warhol, first edition published by The Tate Gallery, London, 1971, as the exhibition catalogue for Warhol´s works on display at the gallery from 17th February to 28th March 1971, featuring a foreword by Norman Reid, an essay by Richard Morphet, and various illustrations (some in colour). Signed by Warhol with his name alone to the front cover of the colour dust jacket which features his famous 1964 image of Marilyn Monroe (an image of Elizabeth Taylor entitled Liz from 1963 appears on the back cover).
