A GEORGE I GILTWOOD MIRROR CIRCA 1725 114.5cm high, 60cm wide Condition Report: Overall there are some scratches, marks, chips, cracks and abrasions consistent with age and use.The mirror plate is a later replacement. It is likely but not clear if some of the gilding could be later, but it has mellow tone and light wear, with some underlying gesso showing and variable tones of gilding.Observations include: fine cracks to the gilt gesso over construction cracks to the mitred corners and sectional joints; cracks to the back boards and some tape; the brass wall fixings are modern; it seems that the crest might be missing supporting bracing to the back with a nail hole and traces of glue to this area; the gesso, gilt, staining and wash could conceal some running repairs such as possible re-tipping to some wood back supports and it is possible that there is some old worm that is similarly not visible.A handsome mirror of subtle grandeur. Please see all the additional condition report photographs through the link on the condition report email as a visual reference of condition - they are a vital part of this report. Condition Report Disclaimer

AFTER CANOVA, A WHITE MARBLE FIGURE OF VENUS ITALICA PROBABLY ITALIAN, 19TH CENTURY Her left arm across her body, her right holding drapery with casket at her feet on shaped circular base 101cm high On a red scagliola column pedestal, 124cm high 225cm high overall Provenance: Nidd Hall, acquired by Guy Reed from Richard Butler, 17th Viscount Mountgarret, in 1968 The Guy Reed Will Trust, Copgrove Hall, Yorkshire In 1802, Antonio Canova was asked if he would fashion a copy of the Medici Venus which Napoleon had removed from Florence to the Musée Napoléon in Paris. Although he agreed to make a copy, the sculpture that he eventually completed in 1811 was quite different from the Medici Venus. It shows a more modest figure, who largely covers her nakedness with a large swag of drapery and lacks the dolphin and the figure of Cupid that accompany the Medici Venus. Canova produced various versions of this figure: the original now in the Palatine Gallery of The Pitti Palace another in the Residenzmuseum in Munich, and the third in Hearst Castle, San Simeon, California, (formerly in the Lansdowne Collection). A fourth version was sold from the Londonderry collection in 1962 and is today in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. In 1820 he also completed a version for Thomas Hope (1769-1831). This version, which Canova in fact liked best of all those he had made, was rather closer in appearance than the others to the Venus de'Medici. It is now in Leeds City Art Galleries. Condition Report: Figure- generally good condition with slightly waxy feel to surface- natural small inclusions and veining, some infill to spotted inclusions from the making. 4-6cm area of loss to raised edge of her drape- to her lower left, some natural flaws visible under strong light- plinth with some scuffs, marks and a small area of what looks to be a knock. Pedestal- losses around the top edge, surface scuffing to shaft, some loss to base edges and corners Please see additional images for visual references to condition which form part of this condition report. A GEORGE III PAPIER MACHE TWIN HANDLED TRAY BY HENRY CLAY (1738-1812), CIRCA 1800 The 'tea-board' painted with twin scrolling Antique vase to the centre within honeysuckle border, impressed mark to the reverse - Crowned "Clay Patent" 62.5cm wide, 47cm deep, 4cm high See The Furniture History Society British and Irish Furniture Makers Online: 'Henry Clay; Birmingham and London; japanner and papier-mâché manufacturer (fl. 1772-d. 1812)... Clay's wealth and fame was based upon a patent taken out on 20 November 1772 for a 'new Improved Paper-ware'. This involved pasting sheets of paper together and then oiling, varnishing and stove-hardening them. This process produced panels suitable for coaches, carriages, sedan chairs and furniture. The trade in this new material developed rapidly with smaller furniture wares such as teatrays, waiters, caddies and dressing cases finding particular favour. These were japanned and decorated with painted scenes and classical (Etruscan) and Chinoiserie subjects.' Condition Report: With wear, marks, knocks and scratches as per age, handling, use, and cleaning. AFTER ERNEST MEISSONIER (1815-1891), AN EQUESTRIAN BRONZE OF NAPOLÉON THE 1ST IN 1814 EARLY 20TH CENTURY Sometimes titled "La Campagne de France", signed to cast E Meissonier, Siot Decauville foundry stamp, numbered 10 and C465 40cm high, the base 37cm x 16.5cm From the posthumous edition of 50 by Siot-Decauville Paris, the cast run began in 1894 and ended in around 1926. Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier is perhaps best known for his historical and academic paintings. His work as a sculptor was relatively unknown even within his own lifetime- an artistic practice limited to smaller more private works largely for his own entertainment and practical use. It is likely that he modelled work- usually horse related- in wax and clay in order to achieve better and more realistic depictions in his paintings. After his death it seems that his heirs licensed reproduction of some of these works in bronze in order to help pay off the debts he'd accrued. It is thought that this particular model was used for the painting "La Campagne de France, 1814" (now in at the Musée d'Orsay). Other bronze casts from the Siot-Decauville foundry are held in museums in Bordeaux and Lille. Condition Report: With wear from use, handling and age. Storage looks to have been in a damp place resulting in verdigris build up to recesses and accumulated dirt and old wax throughout- with colour variances from oxidisation and exposure. Will greatly benefit from thorough, light sensitive clean. With some wear and marks to raised edges and details. Rein ends under horse mouth slightly distorted- and look not to be in the correct positions with some elements not connected. Please see additional images for visual references to condition which form part of this condition report. All lots are available for inspection and Condition Reports are available on request. He was primarily an engraver of maps, charts and globes who moved again in 1783 to 188 Strand. By 1791 he had entered into what appeared to be a relatively casual partnership with his brother, William; this partnership lasted until circa 1816 by which time William and John Cary had moved again to 181 Strand before finally settling in 86 St. James in 1820. The following year he was succeeded by his sons, John (II) and George Cary, who continued from the firm's 181 Strand address until 1851/2 when the business was acquired by Henry Gould. Condition Report: Terrestrial - The sphere generally has very good surface and colouring however has a strike/scuff approximately 25cm long in the North Pacific - this has caused a crack and some deformation as well as some varnish loss and the surface beneath now taking on a much darker tone. The Indian Ocean also has a Z-shaped scratch approximately 15cm high which has also taken on a dark colour. Faults to the sphere are otherwise generally limited to light varnish blemishes and relatively light scratching which are mostly visible due to taking on a dark colour (grime build-up). The Southern polar region has some light foxing and there are some loose pieces internally causing a slight rattle when the globe is turned. Celestial - The sphere has good surface and colouring. There is some noticeable concentric scuffing/losses to the varnish approximately 5cm below the equator line otherwise noticeable faults appear to be limited to minor historic varnish scuffs and scratches. As with the terrestrial there is some loose material causing a slight 'rattle' when the sphere is turned. Both spheres are mounted securely on their pivots and turn and turn feely; the brass fittings have overall discolouration/tarnishing but are in good original condition. The horizon papers are generally in very good original condition; the celestial has an angled shrinkage crack otherwise faults are limited to minor historic rubbing and wear. The stands are both in sound original condition with no visible breaks or noticeable repairs and damage generally limited to a few bumps and scuffs. Both are missing several of the small curved brackets fitted at the junction between the horizon ring and quadrant supports. Both also have evidence (sockets to the back of each foot) indicating that compass stretches were fitted at some point.  Condition Report Disclaimer
