* ETHEL WALKER (SCOTTISH b. 1941), ALSTROEMERIA AND IMARI oil on board, signed, titled verso image size 54cm x 60cm, overall size 73cm x 79cm Framed and under glass. Comment: an outstanding and highly detailed Ethel Walker still life. Note: Ethel Walker was born in Ayrshire, Scotland, in 1941. She graduated from The Glasgow School of Art in 1964 where she had been taught by David Donaldson, once the Queen's portrait painter. Beginning her career as a teacher, by the age of twenty-seven she was a full-time artist. Walker is one of the most successful female painters working in Scotland today. Her talent in capturing the ever-changing light of the Scottish landscape is outstanding, and her subtle but strong still life paintings are highly-prized. Work is held in many public and corporate collections worldwide, including the Royal Bank of Scotland and Sara Lee Holdings. In The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction of 12th September 2021 "The Silver Table" (lot 562), a mixed media by Ethel Walker sold for £2600 (hammer) and in our December 2021 auction "The Lace Cloth" achieved £3000 (hammer).

An ancient Egyptian mummy shroud of beadwork from the chest of a mummified person, consisting of a net of dark green barrel and light green tubular beads with a green ring of beads to forming the face, the skin made of green beads, the nose formed and mouth formed of red beads, a winged scarab pectoral and four sons of Horus: Imsety, Duamutef, Hapi, Qebehsenuef. Protectors of the organs of the deceased. Shrouds of this type became popular in the Late Dynastic Period all the way through the Ptolemaic period and had both decorative and more importantly symbolic use, as the burial was a highly magical process. To the Egyptians, rebirth and accession into the afterlife were more important than the life they first lived. Ca. 4th–5th century AD. A glass unguentarium with a piriform body standing on an applied disc base featuring an everted mouth and applied handles that join the shoulder to the rim. The original light blue glass shines through in places and the patina that has formed over the glass displays patches of beautiful iridescence. Unguentaria, like alabastra in ancient Greece, were vessels used to store perfume or toilet oil in the Roman period.
