A collection of eleven Cities Of Italy maps, drawn by W V Clarke, various engravers, including Corsica and Sardinia, with Malta and the Balearic Islands, Florence, and Genoa, in a slip case Condition report Report by GH Many of the maps in the lot are indeed published by SDUK, however several are published by Baldwin & Cradock, including Florence, Naples and Pompeii. The maps published by SDUK include Modern Rome, Ancient City of Rome, Ancient Syracuse, Turin and Venice. There are various condition faults, including light foxing, discolouration to edges and cropping. All of the maps are linen backed and in four sections, with the exception of one larger map which is in eight sections. The linen backing was clearly applied a long time ago. The maps have been cropped. taking away part of the margin, and in some cases the publisher information has been partially cut off. The maps generally present reasonably well.
A group of six early 20th Century Wedgwood lustre bowls, two having pale coloured exteriors with mottled orange interiors exterior and interior decorated with butterflies with gilt colour borders, two having green exteriors having dragons design with patterned light blue interiors, together with two others having gilt butterfly decoration, one having orange exterior with mottled purple interior and the other having orange exterior with light green interior, each 8cm by 6cm. Three A/F.
C.II Airship Disaster River Humber 1917. A collection of medals. presentation gold watches, certificates etc awarded to Special Constable Frederick Higham and his fifteen year old Boy Scout son Arthur for life saving after the airship burst into flames and crashed into the River Humber near Brough. Items relating to former Hull F.C. rugby player Frederick Higham, who was manager of The Gas Works at Brough at the time, comprise a boxed 18ct gold key wind pocket watch inscribed and presented by the Officers and Men of the South Hunsley Constabulary with 9ct gold watch albert weighing 70gms, 1898-9 Yorkshire Senior Rugby Competition 9ct gold fob and gold mounted amber cigarette holder in silver case; a cased OBE medal, Special Constabulary Faithful Service Medal, a cased British Gas Light Long Service Medal and WW2 Defence Medal in box of issue with paperwork and Long Service 1939 clasp. Items relating to Arthur Higham comprise 18ct gold key-less pocket watch inscribed and presented by the Officers and Men of the South Hunsley Constabulary with 9ct gold Albert chain weighing 45gms, cased Humane Society bronze medal with various certificates, Boy Scouts "silver" cross with certificate signed by Baden Powell and Boy Scouts Silver Fox award with neck ribbon and 9ct gold watch fob inscribed Hull and District Boy Scouts 1917. There is also an archive of paper ephemera relating to the rescue including contemporary newspaper cuttings, letters of congratulations. photographs, maps and plans etc
An old mahogany Lazy Susan, the single piece top with piecrust edge, 61cm wide. Condition Report: Condition is commensurate with age and use. There is a tip missing to one of the leaf tip decorations. The mechanism moves smoothly and easily. No signs of restoration seen. A light clean would help..
A rare WWII period 'Jungle Tank suit', size 3, labelled J Morris & Sons,1945 and with government arrow. Condition Report: Overall condition is good, having light use. However there are a few small issues: Small holes to left sleeve: Staining to rear seat: Fraying to belt edge: Tarnish to buckle.
Nina Tryggvadóttir (Icelandic, 1913-1968) Untitled, 1957 signed lower right "Tryggvadottir" '57 oil on board mounted on to canvas 15 x 19cm (6 x 7in) Provenance: Gimpel Fils, 30 Davies Street, London, W1. Nína Tryggvadóttir (March 16, 1913 – June 18, 1968) was born Jónína Tryggvadóttir in Seyðisfjörður, Iceland. Nína Tryggvadóttir is one of Iceland's most important abstract expressionist artists and one of very few Icelandic female artists of her generation. Mainly working in painting she also did paper collage, stained glass work, mosaic and more. She frequently based her compositions on nature where Icelandic landscape and the Nordic light played an important role. Nína started studying art in Iceland and moved to Copenhagen in 1935 where she studied art at the Royal Academy of Art. After graduating from the Academy in 1939 she spent time studying in Paris and was quite taken by the city. In 1942 she moved to New York to study at the Art Students League of New York and develop her art further. There she took an active part in the city’s art scene. Perhaps a little dirty.
John Rosser, 'Early Morning Light, St Marks Square, Venice ' signed, dated 14 gouache, 65cm x 80cm. Provenance: collection consigned directly from the artist. John Rosser: Rosser trained at the Watford School of Art and went on to paint in London with the Francis Bacon as his mentor. As a distinguished member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, he has exhibited widely at the Royal Academy and Paris Salons. Rosser has a national following of collectors and is widely known for his en plein air style of painting outdoors. He works in a variety of mediums from pen and ink to oil, acrylic, gouache and watercolour, varying from landscapes to seascapes and figurative. This collection features a wide variety of his works spanning his lifetime including the darker more abstract works of the 1940s and 1950s, as well as the later and brighter more Impressionistic works and seascapes from his current home in Poole. His work was exhibited in the recent retrospective 'John Rosser - Sleeping With Francis Bacon' held at the Ebury Galleries in London in 2009.
