The owner of several weekly journals died at his home in Croydon Surrey at the age of 65 (23 Sept 1915), the fund he founded in the 1890s provided pensions for the survivors, fourteen of whom were still alive at the beginning of the First World War. The archive contains many early press cuttings, letters, etc. A photograph taken in 1906 shows 20 survivors. Mr Roberts wrote to King George V of his failure to acknowledge the survivors on parade at a review on 23rd June 1911, he received a reply “that the King regretted the survivors had escaped his notice and it was entirely an oversight on his part” and that “he hopes that they enjoyed their day and were not too fatigued with standing about so long in the crowded streets”. Also included is a souvenir programme of a concert held for the survivors fund at the Tivoli theatre, October 25th 1912. Note: An autographed appreciation by the survivors to Mr Roberts is in the following lot, possibly one of the most interesting collection of autographs in existance.

A scarce and interesting .62” Baker flintlock rifle of the King’s German Legion, 45¾” overall, twist barrel 30¼” with Tower proofs, elaborate folding rearsight, and bayonet bar, flat lock with ring neck cock, the plate stamped with crowned GR and Tower, walnut fullstock with regulation brass mounts, including small size rounded butt trap, elliptical barrel wedge plates and vacant escutcheon, the butt plate tang engraved “6/8 K.G 3-L-B”, the trigger guard bow engraved “Nock”, original steel ramrod, also numbered “6/8”, front sling swivel only. Good Working Order and Condition with dark patina to lock and barrel (some wear commensurate with age, approximately 1” of rifling bored out at muzzle). Plate 40. Note: Accompanying this item is a printed page of research on the King’s German Legion, which in 1806 consisted of 2 Light Battalions and 8 Line Battalions, each of which had a sharpshooter half company of 57 men armed with rifles. Since there were only 2 Light Battalions the “3-L-B” must refer to the 3rd Line Battalion, commanded by Col Heinrich Von Hinuber in 1806, the year that the King’s German Legion was issued with Baker Rifles.
