Russell.Modern System..Naval Architecture 3 vol. in 4 first edition 168 engraved plates many folding and/or double-page occasional light offsetting but generally a very clean copy title to vol.2 and half-title to Part II of text cut and mounted contemporary half morocco t.e.g. rubbed spines and corners a little worn one spine torn at head some splits to joints large folio [1864-65]. ***A good copy of this monumental work one of the most important on naval architecture produced in the 19th century. Russell was manager of the large shipbuilding works at Greenock later owned by Caird &Co. where he designed the Wave the Scott Russell the Flambeau and the Fire King. Later he moved to the Thames where he built the famous Great Eastern launched in 1858 and the largest vessel afloat until 1903. Details and designs for this vessel as well as the Warrior the first sea-going armoured frigate are included in this work..

Berrettini (Pietro) Tabulae Anatomicae first edition title in red and black with engraved vignette woodcut decorations and initials 27 engraved plates by Luca Ciamberlano some spotting and soiling mostly to margins light water-stain to lower edge contemporary French mottled calf spine gilt in compartments with raised bands a little rubbed but overall a very good copy [Garrison-Morton 395.2; Heirs of Hippocrates 470] folio Rome Antonius de Rubeis for Faustus Amideus 1741. ***Superb engravings by this enormously important and infuential Italian artist who according to the World Encyclopaedia of Art “...among Italian painters [Berrettini] must be considered the most influential personality of his generation...” Twenty of the anatomical studies (plates I -XIX males and XXVII female) were originally drawn by Berrettini in about 1618 and depict their subjects in a variety of dramatic poses amongst columns plinths and arches derived from classical architecture. The remaining 7 plates show figures copied from Vesalius Vesling Casserio and others along with commentary supplied by Petrioli who published the work in 1741. Petrioli also had the plates embellished with numerous smaller anatomical figures taken from Vesalius Valverde and others “engraved in an incongruous manner wherever there was sufficient space on the plate” (Roberts &Tomlinson). It is these embellishments which were removed from the plates of the 1788 edition (see following lot)..

Thornton (Robert John) The Temple of Flora second edition 2 engraved titles hand-coloured engraved frontispiece 28 hand-coloured botanical plates and 2 uncoloured allegorical plates without printed title occasional light foxing and marginal soiling bookplate of John Warren old marbled boards later cloth reback uncut bit worn folio [1812]. ***The “lottery edition” of Thornton`s magnum opus published in a vain attempt to finance the continuation of the magificent folio edition started in 1799. Copies of the book and individual plates were sold by lottery but this venture also failed and bankrupted Thornton. The work however in both formats remains one of the greatest of all botanical works. This copy includes the plate depicting The Persian Cyclamen which is sometimes missing. .
