Signed 8 x 10 photograph of Henreid standing in a three quarter length pose in costume as Victor Laszlo alongside Ingrid Bergman (Ilsa Lund) and Humphrey Bogart (Rick Blaine) as they enjoy a drink together outside the entrance to Rick's Café Americain in a scene from Casablanca. DICKENS CHARLES: (1812-1870) English Novelist. A fine autograph envelope signed, boldly addressed by Dickens to Alfred Tennyson Esquire at St. James's Square in Cheltenham. Signed ('Charles Dickens') to the lower left corner. The envelope bears a Penny Red postage stamp and several postmarks, one dated May 1849. With the remnants of a red wax seal to the verso. An excellent association piece between two of the most famous literary figures of Victorian England. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, otherwise VG Alfred Tennyson (1809-1892) 1st Baron Tennyson. British Poet Laureate 1850-92. Tennyson resided at 10 St. James's Square in Cheltenham from 1846-50. Charles Dickens named his fourth son, Alfred D'Orsay Tennyson Dickens (1845-1912) after his godfathers, Alfred, Lord Tennyson and Count Alfred D'Orsay. The Pilgrim Edition of the Letters of Charles Dickens (Volume V, 1847-49) do not record any letters by Dickens to Tennyson in May 1849.

[BOHME FRANZ]: (1885-1947) Austrian General in the Wehrmacht who served as Adolf Hitler's Plenipotentiary Commanding General in the Balkans and Commander-in-Chief in German-occupied Norway during World War II. Bohme stood trial at Nuremberg in the Hostages Trial for having massacred thousands of Serbian civilians and, when his extradition to Yugoslavia seemed imminent, committed suicide in prison. An interesting, small group of four original typed mimeographed documents relating to the trial of Franz Bohme, unsigned, forty pages (total), folio, n.p. (Nuremberg), c.April 1947, in German. The documents were prepared for Bohme ahead of his military tribunal during the Hostages Trial at Nuremberg (July 1947 - February 1948) and cover various aspects including the punishment of persons guilty of war crimes, crimes against peace and against humanity, the organisation and powers of the military tribunals and their uniform rules of procedure, stating, in part, 'Each of the following acts is recognised as a crime...Crimes against peace. Initiation of invasions of other countries and wars of agression in violation of international laws and treaties.....or participation in a common plan or conspiracy for the accomplishment of any of the foregoing....War Crimes. Atrocities or offenses against persons or property constituting violations of the laws or customs of war, including.....murder, ill treatment or deportation to slave labour.....of civilian population from occupied territory, murder or ill treatment of prisoners of war.....killing of hostages......' and further stating, in part, '.....this Ordinance is to provide for the establishment of military tribunals which shall have power to try and punish persons charged with offences recognised as crimes......pursuant to the powers of the Military Governor for the United States Zone of Occupation within Germany......certain tribunals to be known as "Military Tribunals" shall be established......The Military Governor shall designate one of the members of the tribunal to serve as the presiding judge......Neither the tribunals nor the members.....may be challenged by the prosecution or by the defendants or their counsel.....' Each of the four numbered documents bear Bohme's name ('Bohme') in green indelible pencil at the head of the first pages and all feature green and red indelible pencil underlinings to various parts of the text. POPITZ JOHANNES: (1884-1945) Prussian Finance Minister and a member of the German Resistance against the government of Nazi Germany. In 1943 Popitz conducted secret talks with Heinrich Himmler in order to try and obtain his support for a coup d'etat and subsequent peace deal with the Western powers, however Popitz was being watched by the Gestapo and was arrested on 21st July 1944, just one day after Claus von Stauffenberg's unsuccessful assassination attempt on Adolf Hitler, known as the 20 July plot. Popitz was subsequently sentenced to death and executed. A rare book signed and inscribed, being a hardback edition of Stein: Eine politische Biographie, two volumes, First German Edition published by Unftalt of Stuttgart and Berlin, 1931. The first volume is signed and inscribed by Popitz to the front free endpaper with a lengthy inscription in German to Dr. Landfried, thanking him for his faithful cooperation in the last step of the Prussian financial and administrative history. Signed by Popitz in his capacity as Prussian Finance Minister and dated Berlin, 26th September 1935 in his hand. With a small printed German transcript of the inscription neatly affixed at the base of the front free endpaper. Both volumes also bear the bookplate of history teacher Jurgen Himstedt. Bound in the original publisher's brown and red cloth with gilt stamped titles to the covers. A good and interesting association copy. Some light overall age wear, otherwise about VG Dr. Friedrich Landfried (1884-1952) German Lawyer & official with the Prussian Finance Ministry. When Hermann Goring was appointed Reichsstatthalter and Prime Minister of Prussia in 1933 he requested that his villa within the grounds of the Prussian Ministry be redesigned at a projected cost of some 720,000 Reichsmarks. Dr. Landfried refused to sanction the cost, prompting Goring's angry response 'I do not intend to begin my dictatorship by allowing the Ministry of Finance to lay down the law to me!' Of course, Goring got his own way and the new buildings included a roomy lion pit for his pet lion cub. Gerhard Ritter (1888-1967) German Historian and Author, Professor of History at the University of Freiburg 1925-56. Although Ritter was originally a supporter of the Nazi regime and cooperated on anti-Polish propaganda, he was later to become an adviser to Carl Goerdeler and became involved in the 20 July plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler. Ritter was one of the few conspirators not to be liquidated by the Nazis although he was imprisoned in 1944 for the duration of World War II.

LAUREL & HARDY: LAUREL STAN (1890-1965) & HARDY OLIVER (1892-1957) English and American Film Comedians. A printed 8vo theatre programme for a performance by Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy in Birds of a Feather at the New Theatre, Northampton, in the week commencing 19th October 1953, signed by both Laurel and Hardy individually in bold blue inks to clear areas at the foot of the front cover. A colour vignette of the duo is lightly and neatly affixed to the centre of the front cover. Some very light, minor creasing and a horizontal central fold, not affecting the signatures, otherwise VG The recent critically acclaimed film Stan & Ollie (2018) focuses on the personal relationship of the two comedians during their gruelling Music Hall tour of the United Kingdom and Ireland in 1953. The present programme dates from one of their performances from that tour.

NELSON HORATIO: (1758-1805) British Admiral during the Napoleonic Wars, the victor of the Battle of Trafalgar, 1805.Ink signature ('Nelson & Bronte') and two additional lines of holograph text, in full, 'I beg you to Believe that I feel myself as ever your most obliged servant', on a slim oblong 8vo piece, evidently removed from the conclusion of a letter. BRAUN FRITZ: (1879-1964) German School Teacher, the father of Eva Braun, Adolf Hitler's partner and eventual wife. An extremely rare original vintage signed sepia 2.5 x 3.5 photograph by Fritz Braun, to the verso, the candid image depicting his daughter, Eva Braun, standing in a full length pose outdoors, wearing an overcoat and hat and posing alongside a motor car. Signed ('F Braun') by Braun in bold indelible pencil and further annotated in his hand, in German, in full, 'My daughter Eva in front of her home in Munich in the year 1939'. Above the annotation appears Fritz Braun's personal ink stamp with his name, profession ('Senior Vocational-School Teacher, retired') and his address in Ruhpolding, Upper Bavaria. Some very light, extremely minor age wear and with some light fading to the image, otherwise about VG Provenance: The present photograph, removed from the Braun's private family album, was given by Fritz Braun to his friend Julius Weder as a memento in 1951. The image is most likely unpublished. In 1939, the date of the present photograph, Eva Braun was residing in the fashionable Bogenhausen district of Munich and it is her home at Wasserburgerstrasse 12 (now Delpstrasse 12) that can be seen in the photograph. Braun lived there with her younger sister Gretl and the house was not far from Hitler's Prinzregentenplatz apartment. The Braun sisters used the property as their main residence when Hitler was at the front during World War II. The motor car in the photograph is most likely one made by the Maybach Motorenbau.

SACHSENHAUSEN: A mimeographed copy of the written testimony of 'Blockältester' Karl Schwerbel, former SS member, sent to Sachsenhausen for the crime of homosexuality under §175 StGB of the German Criminal Code, nine pages, folio, Sandbostel, 18th December 1945. The testimony being a first-hand report on the evacuation of the Sachenhausen concentration camp in April 1945, describing the conditions of fellow prisoners, their food rations, guards, encounters and the environment they experienced during the forced march, in part, 'All prisoners who were fit to march were to leave the camp on foot, in marching units of 500… The Children, the sick and those not fit to march, were to stay behind in the camp… When the order to evacuate became known, disturbances, surprise raids, and plundering started… It was impossible, however, to prevent the theft from the camp post office of what were said to be some 2000 Red Cross parcels… Some Russian and Ukrainian prisoners had apparently attacked a truck loaded with provisions, and they had been driven off by shots from an SS NCO…every prisoner had issued to him as a 3 day march ration, 1 army loaf, together with 350 or 500 grams of tinned meat, (¼ of a tin)… To each marching group were allotted, in addition, armed prisoners, who had been picked for the Dirlewanger unit… The group commander, from the side of the Sachsenhausen concentration camp, was the former SS Sturmscharfuhrer Breitling… After a march of about 15kms., we rested… During this time I witnessed the following incident… a prisoner who lingered behind a column which was passing by us was shot by a member of the SS on the open road… the incident was, however, also observed from a car of the International Red Cross… In the evening, we found shelter in barns… Here again we all had cooked potatoes, and some of us buttermilk as well… On 22. and 23.4.1945… we saw also in the ditches on both sides of the road many bodies of male prisoners with shot wounds. There must have been over 20 of them… on 24.4.45… an SS officer - not known to me - who was passing our column on a motor-cycle, shouted out an order from Keindl, the commandant, not to shoot any prisoners, since the sick and the feeble would be taken on in lorries… In Below, there began for the prisoners the most dreadful suffering… no further food for 5 days… Every morning, for this reason, some 50-60 corpses lay close to the edge of the camp. Cases of cannibalism are also believed to have taken place… On account of the ever-worsening situation, Keindl, the commandant, decided to allow a proportion of the prisoners to return home… In addition, the escort was most strictly forbidden to use their firearms against the prisoners… The last three nights of the march were spent under the open sky by prisoners and escort… It frequently occurred that bands of famished prisoners fell upon turnip and potato stockpiles… SS Hauptsturmfuhrer Petri also tried, in one village, to stop a peasant woman from giving milk to prisoners and SS men. On the other hand, I also noticed that the escort personnel secretly gave the prisoners… potatoes, turnips, cigarettes and water… In the afternoon of 2.5.1945, the terrible march of my column came to an end… through its disintegration and flight to safety with the American troops.' It would appear that she acquired a number of the signatures during the Tsarevich Nicholas’s Grand Tour of the East 1890-91 during which he visited India from 23rd December 1890 – 12th January 1891. It was during this tour that the future Tsar Nicholas II was the subject of a failed assassination attempt (known as the Otsu incident) on 11th May 1891 during his visit to Japan.

HOPKINS ANTHONY: (1937- ) Welsh Actor, Academy Award winner. Small series of four T.Ls.S., Anthony Hopkins, including one signed by a secretary on his behalf, each one page, 8vo, London, January 1986 - December 1987, all to Miss. Kathleen Kennedy, a piano teacher. Hopkins largely writes concerning music and his piano, stating, in part, 'I am, at the moment, fixed up with a piano teacher but I am not quite sure how it is going to work out, so may I keep hold of your letter and if needs be get in contact with you' (21st January 1986), 'Thank you very much indeed for thinking to send me a copy of your booklet; I have looked through it, but as yet haven't got round to 'doing' it.....at the moment I don't seem to have much time for anything other than the National Theatre! The piano has had to take very much of a back seat...' (8th June 1987), 'Thank you so much for the Exercises.....I am very pleased to have them and they are more than useful.' (30th September 1987), and in the final letter (signed by his secretary) Hopkins confirms having booked a seat for Kennedy at a theatre and provides instructions for collecting the ticket. Together with Albert Finney (1936-2019) English Actor. T.L.S., Albert Finney, one page, 8vo, n.p. (Sussex), 1st November 1989, to Miss. Kathleen Kennedy. Finney thanks his correspondent for her letter and adds that he is delighted she enjoyed a performance, further remarking 'I found the difficulty for a non-pianist like myself, in studying the piece, was the different and separate movements with either hand, but it is strangely satisfying to imagine, as I sit there, that it could be me (fantasy, fantasy)!'. Each of the letters are accompanied by the original envelopes. ASQUITH H. H.: (1852-1928) British Prime Minister 1908-16. A.L.S., H. H. Asquith, one page, 8vo, Whitehall, London, 14th May 1914, to Mr. Bailey, on the blind embossed stationery of the Secretary of State for War, marked Private. Asquith writes, in full, 'I am greatly obliged to you for your letter of the 12th, & will give careful consideration to your suggestions'. Together with a fountain pen ink signature ('H. H. Asquith') on a 12mo piece, neatly laid down. Also including Margot Asquith (1864-1945) British Socialite, Author and Wit, wife of H. H. Asquith from 1894-1928. A.L.S., M Asquith, two pages, 8vo, Bedford Square, London, 13th March 1924, to a gentleman. Asquith writes in pencil and announces, 'I'm afraid I can't write anything for £100', continuing to explain 'Yesterday a journalist offered me £300 for an article on Rome & promised me more if I cd. make it long enough for two parts. I've been offered thousands of pounds by American publishers if I wd. write 2 articles on our Royal family (King Edward & K. MORSE SAMUEL F. B.: (1791-1872) American Inventor associated with the single-wire telegraph system and the development of the Morse Code. A good A.L.S., Saml. F. B. Morse, three pages, 8vo, New York, 30th April 1862, to Rev. J. Treadwell Walden. Morse acknowledges receipt of his correspondent's courteous letter and a copy of the Atlantic Monthly, remarking 'I have read with deep interest your admirably written article to which you refer, and were I to designate its character, and the impressions it has made upon me, of its high intellectual power, in fitting terms, I might perhaps, be accused of being unduly influenced by its panegyric and the flattering terms in which you are pleased to speak of my humble instrumentality in introducing to the world the invention which has modified so greatly, and is still further to modify the intercourse of the nations' and further adding 'While conscious of the position which humanly speaking has justly been assigned to me by the almost unanimous voice of the civilized world (Great Britain as a Government is an exception) I can say to you that I yet am fully sensible that I am a wea[k] if an honored instrument in the ha[nd] of the giver of every good and perfec[t] gift, by whom it has pleased Him to grant this boon to his children, and to Him be all the glory'. In concluding Morse invites his correspondent to call upon him either at his residence in New York during the winter or in Po'keepsie during the summer and in a postscript adds 'I send you a copy of a pamphlet (no longer present) which embodies my views on the troubles that distract our country'. A letter of interesting content relating to Morse's contribution to the invention of a single-wire telegraph system. Some light overall age wear and light staining and a few small areas of paper loss, neatly and professionally repaired, only very slightly affecting a few words of text and not the signature, G Jacob Treadwell Walden (1830-1918) American Episcopal Clergyman and Author who was appointed on two special commissions by the United States Sanitary Commission in 1864 to investigate the treatment of prisoners of war. He later lived in England from 1886-89 during which time he preached in Westminster Abbey and wrote The Story of England in Westminster Hall. Father of Arthur Treadwell Walden (1871-1947) American Klondike Gold Rush Adventurer and a member of Byrd's first Antarctic Expedition. Morse's declaration that the Government of Great Britain were an exception to the 'unanimous voice of the civilized world' was made as a result of the English scientist and inventors Charles Wheatstone (1802-1875) and William Cooke (1806-1879) launching a commercial telegraph prior to the American inventor. Wheatstone and Cooke patented the electrical telegraph in 1837 however, within a few years their multiple wired signalling method was overtaken by Morse's cheaper method and the American fought vigorously to be called the sole inventor of the electromagnetic telegraph despite the previous inventions. The Morse telegraphic apparatus was officially adopted as the standard for European telegraphy in 1851 and only the United Kingdom (with its extensive overseas empire) kept the needle telegraph of Wheatstone and Cooke.

BYRON LORD: (1788-1824) British Poet, a leading figure in the Romantic Movement. Signed Free Front envelope panel, addressed in his hand to a Reverend on the Isle of Man and dated London, 26th February 1823. Signed ('Byron') to the lower left corner and bearing a red circular Free frank. Curiously, the name of Byron's correspondent has been crossed through making it illegible, although the first initial may be C. A further contemporary ink annotation immediately above the signature has been lightly erased. ERNST KARL: (1904-1934) German SA-Gruppenfuhrer, one of the suspects thought to be involved in the Reichstag fire in February 1933, just one month after Adolf Hitler was sworn in as Chancellor of Germany and regarded as a pivotal event in the establishment of Nazi Germany. Ernst is believed to have entered into a homosexual relationship with Ernst Rohm, who had participated in the Beer Hall Putsch, however Karl Ernst married in June 1934 (Adolf Hitler served as best man at his wedding). Just six weeks later Hitler ordered a purge of the SA, known as the Night of the Long Knives, and both Rohm and Ernst were executed, the latter shot by a firing squad. An extremely rare D.S., Ernst, one page, small oblong 12mo, Berlin, 5th October 1933, in German. The partially printed document, completed in another hand, appears to be a form of identity card issued to Ernst by the SA of the NSDAP and provides details of his rank within the Berlin - Brandenburg group of the Sturmabteilung (SA). Boldly signed by Ernst in black fountain pen ink. With a light official oval ink stamp. Autographs of Ernst are extremely rare in any form as a result of his execution at the age of 29. VG

BUTE EARL OF: (1713-1792) British Prime Minister 1762-63. A rare A.L.S., Bute, one page, 4to, London, 14th April 1781, to the Earl of Buchan ('My Lord'). Bute states that when his correspondent had sent 'an account of the improper choice you had made of a President' he recollects having informed Buchan that 'I was retired from all business' and that 'your Lordship would of course execute the trust you had declared on me…..to the completion of your plan', further adding 'I am obliged to repeat this declaration on receiving your Lordship's letter' and commenting that 'the character proposed can be of no use' in so much as he is acquainted with such matters 'of which your Lordship is in truth the proper judge'. Bute's letter is written in a somewhat infirm hand, thereby making a few words challenging to transcribe. Docketed in ink to the verso, 'Earl of Bute to the Earl of Buchan. I chose Lord Bute for President of the Soct…..but the unhappy man was in himself quite incapable of doing any good'. Some very light, minor age toning to the right and lower edges and very slightly irregularly torn to the left edge, only very slightly affecting a few words of text but not the signature. Some light traces of former mounting to the right edge of the verso. About VG David Erskine (1742-1829) 11th Earl of Buchan. Scottish Antiquarian and patron of the Arts and Sciences. Buchan founded the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland in 1780. John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute, was the first British Prime Minister from Scotland following the Acts of Union in 1707. He was elected the first President of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland in 1780. Provenance: A pencil annotation to the verso of the present letter indicates that it was previously part of the famous collection of books and manuscripts formed by the English antiquary Sir Thomas Phillipps, 1st Baronet (1792-1872).

TURGENEV IVAN: (1818-1883) Russian Novelist and Playwright. A.L.S., Iwan Turgenjew, two pages, 8vo, Rue de Douai, Paris, 2nd February 1878, to Mrs. Paoli, on Turgenev's personal monogrammed stationery, in German. Turgenev replies to his correspondent's kind letter and informs her 'In fact, from the very beginning of my career as an author I wrote plays (the last one in 1851) but I very soon became convinced that I didn't possess the stuff of the dramatic poet, for only the evolution of the characters interested me, not their conflicts', further remarking 'Moreover my pieces have met with no success'. The author continues to remark that, as his correspondent has shown a friendly interest in his affairs, he will send her a copy of his Scenes of Russian Life, explaining that it comprises two plays, 'a comedy in two acts and one in one act' and that 'The last one is not even planned for the stage', also suggesting that 'You will most likely share my opinion about my dramatic skills'. The manuscript document is a treasury warrant relating to John Spicer, a messenger in the Court of Exchequer, granting an allowance to him for his travel and charges in January and February 1724 for the delivery of 'severall blank parchment Books issued out of the King's Remembrances office…..directed to the Custoners, Comptrollers & Searchers of the Ports underwritten for Entring all Goods and Merchandizes as well coming into as going out of the said Ports for one whole year……And also for Entring all Goods and Merchandizes carried betwixt Port & Port…..', the ports listed including those at Sandwich, Yarmouth, Ipswich and Boston. A note at the foot states 'This service has been carefully perform'd as appears by the Rects. of the respective officers' and several additional notes request that the Bill be paid. WELLINGTON DUKE OF: (1769-1852) Anglo-Irish Field Marshal, the Victor of Waterloo, 1815. British Prime Minister 1828-30, 1834. A.L.S., Wellington, three pages, 4to, Drayton Manor, 25th September 1830, to the Duke of Buckingham and Chandos. Wellington states that he is very happy to learn that Lord Londonderry has again announced 'his intention or rather inclination to support the Govt. by his countenance and influence' although continues 'As I heretofore informed you however, I had reason to believe (from what he said to me no less than three times upon three different occasions, the last of which occurred when I offered him the Office of Lord of the Admiralty for his son by Command of the late King) that I was to have the benefit of his countenance and support' and remarks 'I cannot but think therefore that I must still consider his support of the Govt. as doubtful'. Wellington further states 'Lord Londonderry and his friends know that I have invariably done everything in my power to promote his views, and to maintain his influence in the country. I wish that I could appeal to any body for a testimony that upon any one occasion since I have been in office he has given the Govt. any assistance that it was in his power to withhold from it'. A letter of interesting political content. Some very light age wear and a lengthy, neat split to the right edge of the central horizontal fold, only very slightly affecting the text but not the signature, G Richard Temple-Nugent-Brydges-Chandos-Grenville (1776-1839) 1st Duke of Buckingham and Chandos. British Landowner and Politician, Lord Steward of the Household 1830. Charles William Vane (1778-1854) 3rd Marquess of Londonderry. Irish Soldier, Nobleman and Politician. Londonderry fought in the French Revolutionary Wars and the Napoleonic Wars. Excelling as a cavalry commander under the Duke of Wellington, Londonderry served as Wellington's Adjutant General from 1809-12, leaving his post in controversial circumstances with the Duke apparently labelling him a 'sad brouillon and mischief-maker' despite appreciating his skills as a soldier. The present letter is written less than two months before Wellington was to leave the office of Prime Minister, on 16th November 1830. During the summer and autumn of 1830, a wave of riots swept the country and Wellington's government fell. In maintaining the Tory policy of no reform and no expansion of suffrage, Wellington lost ground to the Whigs, who had not been in favour for most years since the 1770s, and as a result the Duke lost a vote of no confidence on 15th November 1830.

CHURCHILL WINSTON S.: (1874-1965) British Prime Minister 1940-45, 1951-55. Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1953. T.L.S., W S Churchill, with holograph salutation and subscription, one page, 8vo, London, 17th May 1939, to Herbert F. Cowley, on the blind embossed stationery of the House of Commons. Churchill thanks his correspondent for their letter and continues 'I greatly appreciate your kindness in writing as you did to the “Daily Sketch”'. Together with the original newspaper article published on the letters page of the Daily Sketch with the headline In Defence [of] Churchill, being a letter written by Cowley, a survivor of the Gallipoli Campaign, disagreeing with a previously published letter by a Margot Keane regarding Churchill, pointing out that she was wrong to state that Churchill was Secretary of State for War at the time of the attack on the Dardanelles and further remarking 'I fancy “Margot Keane” must have ceased reading her daily newspaper, or she would have noticed that Mr. Churchill has been warning Messrs Baldwin, Ramsay MacDonald and Chamberlain that the Germans were arming as quickly as possible, and their airplanes were overhauling ours, and have now exceeded ours! If due notice had been taken of Mr. Churchill's warnings for the past few years we should not be in this awful mess now!'. George R, as King, at the head, and H: Pelham and George Grenville, as Lords Commissioners of the Treasury, at the conclusion, two pages, large folio, Court at Kensington, 19th August 1751. The elegantly penned manuscript document is a warrant addressed to William Pitt, Paymaster of the Forces, and states, in part, 'Whereas, it has been usual to allow a Number of fictious Names upon the Muster Rolls of each of Our Troops of Horse Guards and two Troops of Horse Grenadier Guards, instead of effective men, in order to increase the Allowance of Pay to the several officers of the said Troops, the better to enable them to maintain their Ranks in the Army, and for other purposes…..and also to pass & allow, One Man per Company upon the Muster Rolls of Our Regiment and Twenty five Independt. Companys of Invalids over & above the Allowance born upon this Establishment for the Service of the Agent & Sollicitor to Our said Regiment…..in consideration of his great Pains & Trouble in the Performance of his Duty…..pursuant to two several warrants from us, and from Our late Royal Father….Our Will & Pleasure now is, that the said fictious Names shall be no longer allowed upon the Muster of Rolls…..but instead thereof, We do hereby Authorize and Direct, that in the Debentures to be made out by you from time to time for the Pay of Our Two Troops of Horse Guards…..You take care to allow the Full Pay of six private Gentlemen…..& also the Full Pay of one Man for each Company…..over & above the Allowance to the Agent & Sollicitor….Yet the Amount of the Full Pay of the said Private Gentlemen, & Private Men as well…..is to be Computed and included in the Debenture, or Debentures…..and as often as the same shall be paid & cleared; It being Our Intention that the Officers……and the Agent & Sollicitor….now and for the time being shall all and every of them continue to have & receive the aforesaid Allowance…..' TROOST GERDY: (1904-2003) German Architect, wife of Paul Ludwig Troost. A member of the Nazi Party (NSDAP) and acquaintance of Adolf Hitler, Gerdy Troost was an architectural adviser to the Fuhrer's circle during World War II. She supervised the construction of the Ehrentempels ('The Honor Temples') which were erected in Munich in 1935 and housed the sacrophagi of the sixteen members of the NSDAP who had been killed in the failed Beer Hall Putsch. T.L.S., Gerdy Troost, one page, 4to, Munich, 11th January 1938, to [Trude] Burkner, on the printed stationery of Atelier Troost, in German. Troost states that some days of rest and snow have prevented her from writing earlier and continues to express her happiness at the lovely Christmas and lullaby book which her correspondent had sent as a gift. Two file holes to the left edge, not affecting the text or signature. Some very light, extremely minor creasing, VG Trude Burkner (1902-1989) nee Mohr. German Member of the NSDAP, the first Reichsreferentin of the Bund Deutscher Madel (BDM - The League of German Girls), appointed in June 1934 after her female arm of the Hitler Youth, based in the Brandenburg district of Germany, had grown to become the second largest group in the country under her leadership. At the end of World War II Burkner was captured and imprisoned by the British.

GODERICH VISCOUNT: (1782-1859) British Prime Minister August 1827 - January 1828. A rare A.L.S., Goderich, one page, 4to, Downing Street, 9th November 1831, to His Majesty's Attorney General (Thomas Denman). Goderich apologises for the trouble Denman has had in relation to Mr. Jeremie's case 'as the business upon which your opinion seems to have been required has been long since concluded' and continues to state 'I find upon enquiry that the reference was not made to you by this Department, but by that of the Privy Council without the knowledge of this Office; and as Mr. Jeremie has resigned the judgeship of St Lucia I apprehend that there is no need of your giving yourself any further trouble about it'. With autograph address panel to the verso signed ('T Denman') by Thomas Denman, addressed to Lady Denman at Bakewell and dated London, 19th November 1831 in his hand, with a holograph note to the right border, in full, 'So now goodbye - I have just time to send a few lines to Dick. Believe me ever, my dear wife, your most affectionate & faithful husband'. With remnants of a black wax seal. British Lawyer, Judge & Politician. Attorney General for England and Wales 1830-32 and Lord Chief Justice 1832-50. Denman was energetic in his pursuit, both as a judge and writer, to effect the abolition of the slave trade. John Jeremie (1795-1841) British Judge and Diplomat who served as Chief Justice of Saint Lucia 1824-31 and Governor of Sierra Leone 1840-41. Jeremie was associated with the issue of slavery throughout his lifetime and the publications he made during his time in Saint Lucia are thought to have contributed to the abolition of slavery. Jeremie was also praised for advancing 'negro freedom' and recognised that colour prejudice and slavery were two different problems. At the time of writing the present letter Goderich was serving as Secretary of State for War and the Colonies (1830-33).

Grey states 'The enclosed memorial (no longer present) was sent to me whilst I was at Howarth & has since escaped my memory' and asks his correspondent 'Will you enquire in your office what has been done on similar occasions & whether there are any & what objections to a compliance with Mr. Buller's application'. Fonda writes a series of social letters to his friend, stating, in part, ‘He hasn’t killed me yet – but he hasn’t given up – Neither have I – ‘ (7th May 1940), ‘I forgot, of course, that I can’t write a letter to an officer…..It was fun seeing you last week – wish I could have sat down and really shot the breeze without having to run……the weather has been like summer and the sinus condition has disappeared and taps just sounded and I’ve got to get this light the hell out’ (‘Monday nite’, accompanied by the original envelope post marked by the US Navy 17th February 1943 and signed by Fonda in the return address), ‘This won’t stand up for a letter – but will let you know I survived – and thanks for the good thoughts’ (16th December 1951), ‘It’s much too late for excuses – let’s just face it – I don’t write many letters. Now that I’ve started this one – I don’t know what to write about – I don’t want to talk about “Point” which of course is closest to me at the moment, because I want you to see it first and then we’ll talk. I don’t want to talk about politics – because even now I am still too emotionally involved – though we’ll have to talk about it sometime – there are many things I don’t understand about some people I used to know. That leaves the weather and our healths – the first is fine here – and the second improving……Our summer is still unplanned – there is talk about a movie of “Mister Roberts” but nothing very definite – Unless there is an exciting movie to do – we’ll come back to Long Island for the summer…..’ (Chicago, 2nd February, annotated ’53?’ in pencil in an unidentified hand), ‘There is little I can tell you of my work other than that the hours are long – often exciting – and sometimes interesting – never dull because you’re too damn busy…..We’ve moved forward three times since I’ve been with the command – and new operations follow each other so fast that we find ourselves working on two at the same time. Some light overall age wear, minor creasing and small tears etc., generally G to about VG, 10 Meta Stern (1899-1975) American Researcher & Script Supervisor who worked on various films, mainly during the 1940s and 1950s, including Drums Along the Mohawk (1939), The Grapes of Wrath (1940), and Fort Apache (1948) all of which starred Henry Fonda and were directed by John Ford. Henry Fonda enlisted in the US Navy in November 1942, serving for three years initially as a Quartermaster 3rd Class on the destroyer USS Satterlee and was later commissioned as a Lieutenant Junior Grade in Air Combat Intelligence in the Central Pacific. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Navy Presidential Unit Citation.

RUST BERNHARD: (1883-1945) German Reich Minister of Science, Education and National Culture 1934-45. T.L.S., Rust, one page, 4to, Berlin, 14th March 1938, to [Trude Burkner] ('Sehr verehrte gnadige Frau!'), on the printed stationery of Der Reichs und Preussische Minister fur Wissenschaft, Erziehung und Volksbildung featuring a blind embossed Nazi eagle and swastika, in German. Rust writes a brief letter sending his and his wife's sincerest congratulations on the birth of Burkner's son. With blank integral leaf. Two file holes to the left edge, not affecting the text or signature, and a couple of very light, extremely minor creases, otherwise VG Provenance: The present letter was previously part of the official papers retained by Trude Burkner nee Mohr (1902-1989) German Member of the NSDAP, the first Reichsreferentin of the Bund Deutscher Madel (BDM - The League of German Girls), appointed in June 1934 after her female arm of the Hitler Youth, based in the Brandenburg district of Germany, had grown to become the second largest group in the country under her leadership. At the end of World War II Burkner was captured and imprisoned by the British.

Signed in dark fountain pen ink across the image and dated Dublin, 1900 in his hand. The signature largely runs across a darker area of the image although is reasonably legible.
