JOHN PIPER (BRITISH 1903-1992) FOR ARTHUR SANDERSON: A length of 'Stones of Bath' fabric, circa 1960s, sewn into four curtain panels. John Piper was one of Britain's most distinguished and prolific artists of the twentieth century. Working in many different styles across his career, he was a painter and print maker, designing stained glass windows, theatre and opera sets, ceramics and textiles. Piper's textile designs embodied his love of Britain's art and architecture, landscapes, and abstract and religious imagery. He created designs notably for a number of tapestries and alter pieces, and importantly for Lots 231 - 234, furnishing fabrics for Arthur Sanderson & Sons Ltd.In 1959, Arthur Sanderson commissioned five textile designs from John Piper as part of their 1960 Centenary Celebrations. 'Stones of Bath' is one of these designs, with two of the other designs shown in Lots 233 and 234. The design was screen printed using 19 colours, which was far more than conventional screenprints on paper. Manufactured from 1962, the semi abstract designs featured the buildings of Bath in different shades, green, violet, aubergine and many others.Sanderson used their 'Sanderlin' fabric - a satinised linen which gave the design a shimmering texture, reflecting the play of light on the honey-coloured stone buildings of Bath.Sanderson's Victorian warehouse in Chiswick is now the headquarters of Chiswick Auctions.

▲ Colum Robert Gore-Booth (1913-1959) A landscape in France with farm buildingssigned and dated 'Colum/1939' l.l., oil on canvas73 x 92cmPainter Colum Robert Gore-Booth was born into an influential Anglo-Irish family in 1913. His grandfather was the famous Arctic explorer Sir Henry Gore-Booth, and his aunt Constance, known as Countess Marklewicz, studied art in Paris before joining the suffragettes and becoming the first woman MP to be elected to the House of Commons (although, as a member of Sinn Fein, she did not take her seat). The Gore-Booth family was based at Lissadel House in County Sligo in Ireland, where it is said that the poet W B Yeats often stayed, but Colum himself was born in Doncaster, and throughout his life spent a great deal of time at Sandhall Hall in East Yorkshire, the ancestral home of his mother. Colum went on to study at St John’s Wood School of Art and later moved to France during the 1930s. His work was heavily influenced by the Fauvist and Expressionist art movements, and his distinctive landscape paintings incorporate bold colours and broad brush strokes, creating stylised and intriguing panoramas, such as the work offered for sale.Colum exhibited his work in both Paris and London, but sadly passed away at the young age of forty-five in 1959.
