A Regency printed silk and needlework oval picture depicting a woman dressed in finery seated by a tree with dog to her side, mounted and gilt framed under glass, image size approx 30 cm x 232 cm, label adhered verso handwritten 'Miss E Pugh, Church Stretton, Shropshire. I don't know when this needle-work was done, only that it was done by a sister of my grandmother. China.- Thorbecke (Ellen) Shanghai Photographed Depicted..., photographic illustrations by the author, colour illustrations by Schiff, light browning to endpapers, original pictorial boards, spine ends and corners a little bumped, rubbing to extremities, Shanghai, 1941; and a typescript of H.Lang's 1875 lecture 'Shanghai Socially Considered', 4to (2)⁂ A pair of rare works on Shanghai, the first extensively illustrated. Lang was editor of the Shanghai evening courier at the time of the lecture.
Dutch School (probably late 16th century) Animal studies (recto and verso), including a pheasant, turkey, cockerel, rabbit, hedgehog, poodle, goat, horse, lions, bear, and a fire salamander, pen and brown ink, some in pen and black ink, on laid paper without watermark, annotation in Dutch on verso reads 'Swarz mit gold[...?] Salamander', c. 100 x 150 mm. Carpioni (Giulio, 1613-1679) St Jerome kneeling beneath a tree; St Antony of Padua kneeling before a vision of Christ, two works, etchings, both excellent richly inked impressions with burr, the former with light plate tone and wiping marks, both on laid paper, the former with partial indistinct watermark, 224 x 161 mm. (8 7/8 x 6 3/8 in), and 215 x 140 mm. (8 1/2 x 5 1/2 in), respectively, both trimmed just within platemarks and inset at edges onto paper support, the first mentioned with printer's crease in the lower right quadrant, small repairs to tear in lower right of second mentioned, some surface dirt and browning, unframed, published by Matteo Cadorin, [circa 1640-1660]; together with A guardian angel leading a child by the hand, an "en contre-partie" of Simone Cantarini's etching (Bartsch 28), traditionally ascribed to Reni, but here with old attributions to Carpioni, etching, a good impression on laid paper, without watermark, sheet 167 x 131 mm. (16 1/8 x 21 3/4 in) or smaller, the plate showing Esplanade Row has been trimmed into the image, the plate showing Tank Square has been trimmed within the platemark but with lettering still intact and has some browning and surface dirt, the others with occasional surface dirt and light browning, loose, all unframed, Smith Elder and Rodwell & Martin], 1824-1826 and later (5).Literature:cf. Italy.- Rome.- Duperac (Etienne, 1525-1604) I Vestigi dell' Antichita di Roma, title and 33 plates only (of 40), etchings on laid paper with various 17th century watermarks, each sheet approx. 265 x 400 mm. (10 1/2 x 15 3/4 in), title trimmed to platemark with significant loss and damp-staining, most plates with rough edges and small tears, browning and light damp-stains, one or two plates with large tears running into the images, in limp vellum, leaves detached with partial loose manuscript paste down, very worn, oblong 4to, Gottfried de Scaichi, 1575 but printed 1621.Literature:cf. Eutropius. A breviary of Roman history. From the building of Rome, to the year 1119. Of that famous empire, under its kings consuls, and emperors, first edition of this translation, woodcut decorative initials, a few marginal wormholes, some light staining, occasional spotting, contemporary sheep, upper joint starting, spine ends and corners worn, rubbed and scuffed, [Wing E3434], 8vo, printed for Jo. Hindmarsh, 1684.
Trade advertisement.- Women.- Holman (Alice, businesswoman and proprietor of Holman's ink, active after 1712) Holman's Ink for London Powder Records, letterpress with engraved armorial device, on laid paper with partial armorial watermark, sheet 190 x 150 mm. (7 1/2 x 5 7/8 in), small repaired tear upper right, light handling creases, unframed, [circa 1712 and later].⁂ Scarce. Alice Holman inherited the Holman's ink business from her parents, Charles and Jane Holman. Her father had obtained a Royal patent and founded the firm in the 17th century. It is not clear exactly when Alice took over.
