Lib. Scotland (2copies)). Bethune emigrated to North Carolina from Scotland in 1773. He fought for Loyalist forces in the Battle of Moore's Creek Bridge during the Revolutionary War, where he was captured by the rebels. When released he made his way to Montreal, Canada, where he was eventually to set up its first Presbyterian church.

The Pupil of Pleasure, perhaps the first rejoinder in the form of fiction, posits a hero of "birth, rank, figure, and character" who is brought up on Lord Chesterfield. Philip Sedley "purchases the books, finds them agreeable to his palate, studies them paragraph by paragraph, thrives under his application, piques himself upon his progress, and ... sallies into the gay world, armed at all points, the Pupil of Pleasure". Unsurprisingly he comes to a bad end.
