BARRIE J. M.: (1860-1937) Scottish Novelist, created Peter Pan. A.L.S., J. M. Barrie, two pages, 8vo, Lancaster Gate, 15th December 1907, to Mr. Summers. Barrie states that he has given a matter some thought although remarks that public appearances 'grow more and more fearsome to me' and that he is something of a hermit, therefore asks to be excused, concluding 'may you have a good reunion and many of them'. KIPLING RUDYARD: (1865-1936) English Author, Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1907. T.L.S., Rudyard Kipling, one page, 4to, Bateman's, Burwash, Sussex, 17th October 1921, to General Sir Desmond O'Callaghan, marked Private. Kipling thanks his correspondent for their note and continues 'The years pass very swiftly and I wish I could get up to Town to see you and to talk them over. But, unluckily, my visits to Town are uncertain, and I can't say beforehand when I am coming'. Some very light, extremely minor creasing, otherwise VG
STOKER BRAM: (1847-1912) Irish Writer of the horror novel Dracula (1897). A.L.S., Bram Stoker, one page, 8vo, n.p. (Manchester), 3rd November 1900, to Tinsley Pratt, on the printed stationery of Henry Irving, Ellen Terry and The Lyceum Company's Provincial Tour. Stoker states that he has been asked by Irving to inform his correspondent that the actor already has 'a fine play written by the late W. G. Wills' and continues to remark 'as he would not be able to accept yours he thinks it better to return it at once without reading it'. Together with Henry Irving (1838-1905) English Actor. L.S., Henry Irving, one page, 8vo, Glasgow, 23rd November 1878, to W. A. Casson, the text in the hand of an unidentified individual (not Stoker). Irving informs his correspondent that 'A book of my acting version of Hamlet will be published and will be obtainable at the theatre'. Some light overall foxing and a small area of paper loss to the left edge (G), Stoker's letter about EX, 2 Stoker was employed by Henry Irving for some 27 years, first as his personal assistant and later as the business manager of the Lyceum Theatre, which Irving owned. W. G. Wills (1828-1891) Irish Dramatist, Novelist & Painter who regularly worked with Henry Irving.
COOK THOMAS: (1808-1892) British Tourist Agent, founder of the travel agency Thomas Cook & Son. A.L.S., Thomas Cook, two pages, 8vo, Leicester, 13th April 1882, to Henry Bemrose. Cook begins his letter 'When I had the pleasure of travelling with you a few days since from London to Leicester you intimated your desire to be present at the opening of our Memorial Hall' and continues to invite his correspondent to open the bazaar with a short address on 3rd May at 12 noon, adding 'that would afford you a nice time for seeing the interior arrangements of the Hall & for making the acquaintance with our most active & devoted friends'. Cook concludes that they have a circular in the press awaiting for the name of the person who will open the bazaar, and therefore requests 'an immediate reply by wire or pen to this application'. CRIPPEN DR. H. H.: (1862-1910) American-born Physician, famously murdered his wife in 1910. T.L.S., H H Crippen, one page, 4to, Kingsway, London, 3rd May 1910, to Miss. F. Gould, on the printed stationery of The Aural Remedies Company. Crippen sends his correspondent a copy of the Otological Gazette (no longer present) containing 'full particulars of my simple home-treatment for Deafness and Noises in the Head' and continues to remark that the testimonials 'gives you a faint idea of the remarkable success which has attended my new method of Treatment, especially in severe chronic cases of long standing which had previously been regarded as absolutely incurable.' Crippen further asks his correspondent to complete and return an Analytical Form from which he can make an exhaustive study of her case and concludes by writing 'May I urge you in your own interest to give this matter your serious and immediate consideration. Deafness is a progressive ailment and each single day means a firmer hold of the disease. If you are suffering from Deafness or Noises in the Head your complaint cannot, so to speak, stand still, and it is equally certain that it cannot cure itself without attention'. As is usual with Crippen's letters, there is some light overall age wear, particularly to the edges and folds (signs of professional repair) and the signature is a little faded although perfectly legible. Individual dark ink signatures of David Livingstone ('David Livingstone'; on a small blue piece with two additional words in his hand, evidently clipped from the conclusion of a letter) and Henry M. Stanley ('Henry M Stanley'; on a white card, also signed in dark ink by his wife, the painter Dorothy Stanley 1855-1926). Matted in cream with gold coloured borders alongside each other and beneath three reproduction images including portraits of the two men. JAMES VI & I: (1566-1625) King of Scotland (as James VI) 1567-1625 and King of England & Ireland 1603-25. A very fine L.S., James R, as King of England & Ireland, at the head, one page, folio, Westminster, 24th July 2 James I (1604), to Thomas Egerton, the Lord Chancellor. The letter is a demand for the payment of a loan of £200 to the crown and states, ‘…Our expences having been by many urgent occasions since our entry into this Realm, greater then the ordinary meanes or revennewes of our Crowne can supply; It is not unknownen to you that by advise of our Privy Councell We restored to such meanes for the furnishing of our p[rese]nt necessatie as our Progenitors have accustomed to use, that is by borrowing of reasonable somes of money of p[er]sons of abilitie to lend. Whereupon us, as to shew a good example to others, offered to lend each of them to us a competent some, and thereof have made a list and p[rese]nted it unto us, each one having rated himself at such a some as he is conveniently able to spare; in w[hi]ch list you have rated your self at the some of Twoe hundred powndes: for w[hi]ch as we can do no les then signifie to you by this testimony of our hand in how thankfull part we take your readynes therin to do us service; so we do require you to cause the said some of two hundred powndes to be paid into the Receipt of o[u]r Exchecq[ue]r w[i]thin twelve daies after the receipt of these our l[ett]res…’ With integral address leaf. Raising troops for an invasion of France ANNE: (1665-1714) Queen of England, Scotland & Ireland 1702-07 and Queen of the Kingdom of Great Britain 1707-14. A good D.S., Anne R, as Queen, at the head, three pages, folio, Court at Windsor, 10th July 1706. The manuscript document is a warrant addressed to Henry Lumley, Governor of Jersey, Christopher Hatton, Governor of Guernsey and Brigadier Harry Mordaunt, and states that additional officers are required to embark with the Royal Fleet 'in this Summers Expedition under the Command of our Right Trusty & right well beloved Cousin Richard, Earl Rivers', further instructing 'We have therefore upon this occasion thought fitt that Two hundred private soldiers be drawn out of the Several Companies of our Regiment of Foot Commanded by....Brigadier Harry Mourdant in our Islands of Jersey and Guernsey proportionally for filling up and compleating the sd. Regiment going to sea....' and adding that the soldiers should be transported by boat to the Isle of Wight in preparation for sailing. The document also states that the sum of three pounds per man be paid to the regiments 'for such of their Cloaths....the said soldiers shall take along with them'. Countersigned at the conclusion by Henry St. John (1678-1751) 1st Viscount Bolingbroke. English Politician & Political Philosopher, Secretary at War 1704-08. Christopher Hatton (1632-1706) 1st Viscount Hatton. English Aristocrat & Diplomat, Governor of Guernsey 1670-1706. Harry Mordaunt (1663-1720) English Soldier. Richard Savage (c.1654-1712) 4th Earl Rivers. English Soldier & Admiral. Rivers served under the Duke of Marlborough, who formed a high opinion of his military capacity, and it was Marlborough who recommended that Rivers take command of a force (evidently the one referred to in the present document) for an invasion of France in 1706.

‘…the Body of a woman was found today…’ PALMERSTON VISCOUNT: (1784-1865) British Prime Minister 1855-58, 1859-65. A.L.S., Palmerston, two pages, 8vo, Broadlands, 10th October 1854, to the Mayor at Romsey ('My dear Sir'). Palmerston writes, in full, 'I hear that the Body of a woman was found today in the Canal, I conclude that the Body has been or will be examined in order to see whether there are any marks of violence upon it and that steps will be taken to ascertain when and how she left her husband when they parted at Southampton. It seems unlikely that she should have drowned herself'. With blank integral leaf (neat repairs to one fold). Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Palmerston and signed by him in the lower left corner (some light smudging). With a black wax seal to the verso. Signed by Peron at the foot and bearing three countersignatures of officials who accompanied the President on his visit, including Pedro Jose Bonanni (1906-1986) Argentine Minister of Finance. With an attractive printed border. Together with an accompanying title page to the certificate. Both neatly trimmed and with some light age wear, the title page with some tape stains and scuffing. WILDE JIMMY: (1892-1969) Welsh Boxer, the first official World Flyweight Champion, 1916-23. Vintage signed postcard photograph of Wilde standing in a three quarter length pose, in a boxing stance, and wearing his Lonsdale belt. Signed in bold dark fountain pen ink to a clear area of the image and dated 1947 in his hand. Together with a bold fountain pen ink signature (‘Jimmy Wilde’) and date, 19th August 1935, in his hand on a printed correspondence card from the Crown Hotel in Lowestoft. CRICKET: A vintage postcard photograph of a Sussex CCC player signed to the verso by over fifteen cricketers individually, apparently all players who participated in a match, Sussex v. Yorkshire, at Hove on 1st September 1924, including Herbert Sutcliffe, Wilfred Rhodes, Maurice Leyland, Edgar Oldroyd, Roy Kilner, Percy Holmes, Abe Waddington, Maurice Tate, Arthur E. R. Gilligan, Ted Bowley, Tich Cornford, Albert Wensley etc., also curiously signed by the Australian cricketer Alan Fairfax. All of the signatures, with the exception of Fairfax's, are in pencil. Together with three small cards individually signed by the Australian cricketers Bert Oldfield, Bill O'Reilly (both in bold pencil), Stan McCabe and Vic Richardson, each neatly laid down to a page removed from an autograph album. The verso of the album page bears an official signed team sheet by the Indian Cricket Team in Australia 1947-48, comprising eighteen signatures (Amaranth, Hazare, Nayudu, Mankad, Sarwate, Rangnekar, Phadkar, Irani etc.). Some light overall age wear, and the postcard with a few minor faults (tape stain, small pinhole) etc. FR to G, 2

Signed and inscribed 8 x 10 photograph, the image showing Jones standing in a full length pose, holding a golf club, and practicing his swing. Signed, in later years, in bold black ink to a light area of the background, 'For Luke Smith, with best regards, Bob Jones'. BOXING: Small selection of signed 8 x 10 photographs by various boxers comprising Archie Moore (World Light Heavyweight Champion 1952-62), Ken Norton (World Heavyweight Champion 1978) and Ingemar Johansson (World Heavyweight Champion 1959-60). Two of the images are colour and all show the boxers in poses related to their sports. All are boldly signed in blue inks with their names alone to clear areas of the images. VG to EX, 3
SIDDONS SARAH: (1755-1831) British Actress. Ink signature ('S. Siddons') and a few additional words in her hand on a slim oblong 8vo piece, evidently removed from the conclusion of a letter. A partial address and post mark, dated 1815, appear to the verso. Some very light, minor age wear, about VG
SIDDONS SARAH: (1755-1831) British Actress. A.L.S., S. Siddons, two pages, small 8vo, n.p., n.d. ('Saturday', pre-1803), to Miss. Banks. Siddons states that her daughter, Sally, would be happy to see her correspondent tomorrow evening, although adding 'I shall probably not be able to profit by your goodness to her if you come as I shall be out'. The actress concludes by remarking that her daughter has been ill 'and it will be cheery to spend an hour or two with her'. With a neat contemporary ink annotation at the foot of the second page. LANGTRY LILLIE: (1853-1929) British Actress, mistress of King Edward VII. A.L.S., Lillie de Bathe, two pages, 4to, Regents Park, London, n.d. ('Monday', annotated in pencil in another hand 1918), to Mr. Harvey. Langtry informs her correspondent that she would like to attend a matinee if he 'will be in reach of town', asking him to drop her a line as to his whereabouts, and concluding 'I am particularly anxious to see it played'. VEIDT CONRAD: (1893-1943) German Actor, remembered for his role as Major Heinrich Strasser in Casablanca (1942). Vintage signed and inscribed 7 x 9.5 photograph of Veidt in a head and shoulders pose, wearing a military uniform and cap upon his head, in costume from one of his films. Signed in bold blue fountain pen ink to a light area of the image and dated 1936 in his hand. VG

Leigh thanks her correspondent for their sweet letter and apologises for not having seen her friend, explaining 'I had a dinner party I could not get out of and so only saw the last ten minutes of Sail Away. However I went with Mr. Coward the night the Queen went and enjoyed it enormously'. Leigh further adds that she is enjoying being in the countryside and informs her correspondent 'I went to Chichester last Thursday and am afraid to say I was extremely disappointed. However, I am looking forward to The Broken Heart in spite of the notices this morning'. Vintage signed and inscribed colour 9 x 12 magazine photograph removed from an edition of Picturegoer and Film Weekly dated 23rd March 1940, the image depicting Leigh seated in a semi-profile three quarter length pose in costume as Scarlett O'Hara from the film Gone With The Wind (1939). Signed in fountain pen ink to a light area at the base of the image, the inscription across a slightly darker area and with poor contrast. Leigh won a Best Actress Oscar for her role in this film.
