Ray writes in a business-like manner regarding the sales of his works, apologising for writing in English ('in which language I can express myself more shortly') and referring to an agreement he had entered into with his correspondent in 1959, which had led him 'to believe that I would be freed from all matters of keeping accounts and from endless discussions', continuing to rectify several points raised in his correspondent's recent letters, in part, 'Our contract gives you control of world sales, and the exhibitions in New York were arranged with the approval of the Galerie Rive Droite….To date no accounts have been given me of transactions….Among other activities in New York I was responsible for selling a watercolour for $400, as well as some drawings at a good price….In your second letter you say you haven't taken paintings to cover the contract. I have receipts for all the works you have taken which exceed what you have paid me. You admit you haven't paid me the four millions due in 1961. The contract stipulates three millions to be paid over the period…..I cannot go into details here, since you promised to keep accounts for me. Anyhow, your small investment in me has paid off already, I'm sure. And will continue to pay. I have done much more than you in the way of publicity: interviews, radio and television in France and abroad, as well as participating in non-commercial official exhibitions. In 59, before our contract I consigned only the Orateur to Loeb, asking him only 300.00 francs for it. He did not sell it because he probably asked a couple of thousand dollars for it, and I took it back. The poem, penned in Dodgson's characteristic violet ink, is dedicated 'To a young Lady, of whom I was in doubt whether she expected to be called "Miss so-and-so" or "So-and-so" without the "Miss"' at the head, with the two quatrains beneath, reading, in full -'Take not amiss this missile dread:Nor maim my mystic hope,Miscalling me a much misledMistaken misanthrope! My missive's meant to murmur this,With mute mysterious touch:-If I should merely miss the 'Miss',Would you, Miss, miss it much?'Autograph poems by Dodgson are extremely rare and desirable, and the present example (marked '[Copy]' alongside the reference number 46309, both in the writer's hand, and therefore presumably his own retained manuscript) is particularly inventive and humorous and with an interesting association, having been composed for [Miss] Elizabeth Hussey. A couple of very light, extremely minor creases, VGElizabeth 'Bessie' Ley Hussey (1852-1919) was the daughter of Robert Hussey (1803-1856) and his wife Elizabeth née Ley (1810-1896). Robert Hussey was the Regius Professor of Ecclesiastical History at Oxford, where the family lived until moving to Brighton following Robert's death. When Dodgson arrived in Oxford as an undergraduate at Christ Church in 1851 he took rooms with Jacob Ley, Elizabeth Hussey's brother. Dodgson is known to have photographed members of the Hussey family, including the young Elizabeth and her mother on 26th April 1864, some twenty years prior to writing the present verse. The present poem originally came to light in July 2014 at which time it was noted as being both 'unrecorded and unpublished', and it has not appeared on the market since being acquired by the present vendor almost a decade ago.

About VG Onorato Visconti (1585-1645) Italian Roman Catholic cleric and papal diplomat who was appointed inquisitor for Malta by Pope Urban VIII in 1624 and as apostolic nuncio in Warsaw in 1630. Visconti was recalled to Rome in 1636 and although Urban VIII did not consider Visconti's performance satisfactory, Wladyslaw IV took the opposite view and proposed him for elevation to the cardinal's dignity because of his imperial privilege. However, the Pope found Poland's demand unacceptable, referring to a decree of the Council of Trent which said that only those candidates who belonged to the respective nation would be admitted, and to a bull of Pius IV that only Princes could make a recommendation in whose jurisdiction the candidate lived. The dispute over this continued for four years without reaching a conclusion. Despite repeated requests from Wladyslaw IV, the Barberini Pope never considered Visconti for the cardinalate and even ignored him at his last cardinal elevation on 13th July 1643.
