He was the fifth child of Thomas Curtis a gamekeeper born in Newlyn East and Catherine Meluish Curtis (nee Ball born Gorran). Horace lost his father when he was only four years old with the result that his mother and siblings returned to the St Newlyn East area. After the outbreak of war in August 1914, Horace enlisted in September as No.15833 Private Curtis with the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry. Four days after joining the DCLI he found himself transferred from the Cornish force to The 7th Battalion of The Royal Dublin Fusiliers due to shortage of recruits in Ireland. With The 7th Battalion he embarked on the HMT Alaunia at Devonport on Sunday 11th July 1915 and sailed for The Gallipoli peninsula off Turkey as part of the new Mediterranean Expeditionary Force and then on to Gibraltar, Malta and Alexandria. The battalion landed at Suvla Bay on Turkey's Gallipoli peninsula on August 7th 1915 and went on to suffer appalling losses in a campaign that finally saw the enemy claim victory. He then went on to fight in Greece on the Macedonia Front and in 1916 was promoted to Lance Corporal in February and Sergeant in November. The division then sailed in 1917 to the Mediterranean to Egypt for the allied offensive against the Turks in Palestine and then in May 1918 to France to join the units fighting the German advance. Requiring treatment for maleria he returned to England on June 20th 1918 and by September 1918 had gone back to France and onto the front. Bitter fighting continued and near Le Cateau on 18th October he earned The Victoria Cross. The 6th January 1919 edition of The London Gazette and The Cornishman reported the official citation 'No.14107 Sgt. Horace Augustus Curtis Second Battalion R.Duv.Fus (Newlyn East, Cornwall) the most conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty east of Le Cateau in the morning of 18th October 1918, when in attack his platoon came unexpectedly under intense machine-gunfire. Realising that the attack would fail unless the enemy guns were silenced, Sergeant Curtis, without hesitation, rushed forward through our own barrage and the enemy fire and killed and wounded the teams of two of the guns, whereupon the remaining four guns surrendered. Then turning his attention to a train load of reinforcements, he succeeded in capturing over a hundred enemy before his comrades joined him. His valour and disregard for danger inspired all. His Victoria Cross was presented to him by King George V at Buckingham Palace on March 8th 1919. His medals are on display in The Lord Ashcroft Collection at The Imperial War Museum.
