A good old museum quality electrotype copy of an officer’s shako plate of The 4th (Queen’s Own) Light Dragoons,with battle honours to Sevastopol (as worn 1855-61), of gilt copper, with facetted silver panels to the arms of the cross correctly attached by small bolts, with silver backing plate to the centre and 3 lugs. A continental light cavalry trooper’s sword, curved shallow fullered blade 32½”, with “tapered” back edge for most of its length and stamped “B” at forte, steel stirrup hilt with tapered langets and small slotted side loop, plain pommel and backstrap, wooden grip (replaced), in its heavy steel scabbard with 2 rings. Basically GC (worn, scabbard pitted, dark rust patina overall).
A scarce sidearm in the style of an 1856 pattern sword bayonet, recurved blade 20½”, by Kratz, Solingen, iron crossguard and solid pommel, chequered composition grips secured by 5 small studs, in its steel mounted leather scabbard. GC (minor wear and light pitting to hilt and scabbard mounts)
A French M An XI (1800) light cavalry trooper’s sword, curved, shallow fullered blade 34½”, with stamps at forte and marked “Mafcture Nale de Klingenthal Coulaux Freres Entreprs” on backstrap, heavy brass hilt with crossguard and quillon, slender langets, knucklebow and 2 sidebars, forward sloping cap shaped pommel, backstrap and oval studs to ribbed leather grip, the knucklebow with traces of stamps and “Versailles”, in its heavy steel scabbard (several small dents) with 2 rings. A .54” Starr breech loading under lever percussion carbine, 37½” overall, barrel 21” stamped “Starr Arms * Yonkers NY”, the back action lock similarly stamped, the rear frame strap stamped “Starr’s Patent Sept 14th 1865”, with saddle ring on left frame, walnut stock with brass barrel band and butt plate. GWO & Generally Clean (some wear and light pitting). Plate 13
A good .40-65” Springfield Model 1873 “trap door” sporting rifle, number 25904, 49½” overall, heavy octagonal barrel 30” stamped at breech “40/65” and with folding ladder rearsight stamped “R S Lawrence/ Patented/ Feb 15th 1859” and folding 2 position fore sight, the hinge up breech block stamped “Model 1873” over eagle head, crossed swords and “US”, lock stamped with eagle and “US/ Springfield”, walnut fullstock with inset ebony fore end cap and chequered fore end panels and wrist, with plain steel mounts, butt plate tang stamped “US” and with 4 piece cleaning rod in butt compartment. A mid 18th century partly silver mounted 16 bore flintlock fowling piece, by Clarkson of London, 51½” overall, round barrel 36” with London proofs and maker’s mark “RE”, breech engraved with long teardrop panel, muzzle with silver teardrop foresight; plain slightly rounded lock with raised edge, raised pan and swan neck cock, plate signed “Clarkson”; slender walnut fullstock, scroll carving around the breech tang, flower engraved steel trigger guard with acanthus finial, butt plate tang with trophy of arms, and openwork silver sideplate with acanthus leaves, shell and animal head, and silver escutcheon engraved with crest of double headed eagle over coronet and motto “Festina Lente”; with its original wooden ramrod and iron worm. GWO & C (light pitting to lock). The sideplate and breech of this gun is illustrated in “Great British Gunmakers, 1740-1790” by Neal and Back, plate 525. Plate 14
A 10 bore trade type percussion musket, 55½” overall, barrel 40” with B’ham proofs, the large flat border engraved lock stamped with crown and “1861 Tower”, fullstocked with regulation pattern brass mounts, sling swivels and steel ramrod. A .577” 3 band Enfield percussion rifle, 55” overall, barrel 39” with Tower proof and various inspector’s marks; the lock marked with crown over “VR”, “1857 Tower” and lock viewer’s and inspector’s marks; fullstocked, the butt stamped with “WD” over broad arrow, small date 1858, and East India Company rampant lion; with regulation brass mounts, sling swivels with leather sling, steel ramrod, and triangular socket bayonet numbered “89”.
