William Preston; oil on canvas "The Tack Around Sandy Hook, Light Vessel, Americas Cup 1901", signed with initials W.P and dated 1902, 44 x 69cm, framed and glazed. The New York Yacht Club have confirmed that this painting depicts the Americas Cup Race in which Sir Thomas Lipton participated and believed it was the 1901 race. The museum further confirmed that the pictures shows the competing boats "Columbia" and "Lipton`s "Shamrock II" nearing the completion of the tack, with the Light Vessel clearly named and five other spectator vessels. Further research shows that the 1901 races were historically significant in that "Shamrock II" construction involves the tank testing model for the first time and the last of the three races was the closest of all time (Illustrated).
