ELGAR (EDWARD)Series of 20 autograph letters signed ('Edward Elgar', 'Elgar') to Sir Alfred Herbert Brewer (1865-1928), one to Mrs Brewer and one to Charles Brewer, the first recommending Brewer's Emmaus nos. 7 & 8 [of 1901] for the Madresfield Competition ('...if I might be so bold I wd suggest the 3 bars at K (a fifth lower naturally) these would lead into the chorus well...'), the majority concerning the management of the Three Choirs Festival of 1921 and 1922 and mentioning contributions by Bliss and Goosens, ('...the boys are very pleased & it will be a first class thing for the festival... & do away with the remnant of the notion that everything must be a sort of C of E propaganda...'), technical issues (suggesting '...a heavier bass at H'ford on account of the shortness of organ ped there...'), choice of programme ('...I do not want to think the Three Choirs is or are cutting things down....'), making arrangements, and much else, the final letter to Charles Brewer asking him to arrange an audition for Doris Leech, 50 pages, light dust-staining, creased at folds, some small tears, 4to (254 x 202mm.) and smaller, Malvern, The Athenaeum, Brooks's, St James' Place, Perryfield House and elsewhere, 21 November 1901 to 6 November 1931; with two envelopes; autograph letter signed ('Anthony Hope Hawkins') to the Midland Regional Director of the BBC, 6 January [19]31; and further typed letter signed from the BBC to Elgar, 27 October 1931 (24)Footnotes:This correspondence spans some thirty years, but the majority of the letters date from 1921 and 1922 when Elgar and Brewer collaborated on the Three Choirs Festival, an event which began in 1715 and involved the choirs of Hereford, Worcester and Gloucester Cathedrals. Born and bred in Gloucester, Sir Albert Herbert Brewer (1865-1928) held the post of organist and master of the choristers of Gloucester Cathedral from 1896 until his death in 1928. He trained under Charles Villiers Stanford and his pupils included Ivor Novello, Ivor Gurney and Herbert Howells. Through his involvement with the festival, Brewer met Elgar and many other important composers and artistic figures and, during his conductorship '...he introduced many new works and showed great enterprise in the drawing up of programmes...' (F.G. Edwards et al, Grove Music online). His own compositions largely comprised church music for organ and choirs which remain in the standard Anglican canon, including cantatas such as Emmaus of 1901, mentioned here by Elgar. Indeed, Brewer talked at length in his memoir Memories of Choirs and Cloisters of the invaluable assistance Elgar gave him with the score - '...a more generous act could not be imagined...' he wrote. Other works comprised The Holy Innocents and lighter pieces such as The Fairy Pipers which was recorded by Clara Butt. He transcribed several of Elgar's works for organ including Prelude and Angels Farewell from The Dream of Gerontius, In the South, Chanson de Matin and The Coronation March. His son Charles Brewer (d.1978) was a BBC producer who was appointed head of the BBC in Paris in 1944, shortly after the Nazi occupation. In 1945 he was in New York as head of the BBC office in North America. These letters derive from the collection of esteemed ceramics expert and writer the late Henry Sandon, who had a particular interest in Elgar and his works. Provenance: Sir Albert Herbert Brewer (1865-1928); Charles Brewer (d.1978); his nephew Cecil Tew Bruton (1912-1997); purchased from the family of the recipient in 2004 by Henry Sandon (1928-2023); thence by descent. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

DARWIN (CHARLES)Autograph letter signed ('C. Darwin') to Joseph Dalton Hooker ('My dear Hooker'), thanking him for recommending a gardener ('...I despatched a letter this morning telling the young man about the place... I will keep all the documents & return them to you if the man does not wish to come here...'), adding as a postscript '...It is vy good of you to remember about heliotropism of insectivorous plants...', one page, dust-staining and discolouration, some marks and creasing, small 2cm repair to fold tear on reverse, 8vo (205 x 130mm.), Down, 5 October [1879]Footnotes:HOOKER HELPS DARWIN FIND A NEW GARDENER AND PROMPTS DARWIN TO BEGIN RESEARCH INTO HELIOTROPISM: Our letter is one of a series from October 1879 in which Joseph Dalton Hooker is charged with suggesting the name of a prospective gardener to help Darwin at Down House, where Hooker was a frequent visitor. It is published in the Darwin Correspondence Project online (ref.12249F) and they suggest that the candidate mentioned here is likely to be William Duguid (c.1849-1923), a Scot, who, according to the Down House accounts, was employed as Darwin's head gardener in 1879 but left the following year after a scandal (involving 'mysterious dealings in cows' according to the DCP). In the letter, Darwin also thanks Hooker for reminding him about heliotropism (ie. the movement of plants in relation to light) of insectivorous plants. The Project has not identified further correspondence between Darwin and Hooker on the subject, but in 1880, the year after our letter, Darwin published The Power of Movement in Plants, the result of experiments undertaken with his son Francis, in which he concluded that he had not found insectivorous plants to be heliotropic as their priority was to orientate themselves to catch insects rather than receive sunlight. Joseph Dalton Hooker (1817-1911) was not only Charles Darwin's closest friend, he was his most prolific correspondent, and their letters '...provide a structure within which all the other letters can be explored...', (Darwin Correspondence Project). Their correspondence spans forty years of friendship and illuminates both Darwin's scientific and, as shown here, personal life. The post of Head Gardener needed to be considered carefully. The gardens at Down were a 'living laboratory' where Darwin created experimental beds in order to conduct trials on adaptation, seed dispersal, genetic inheritance, cross-breeding and natural selection (Emily Parker article, Down House website). For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

[Abbey Scenery 204; B. Adams, London illustrated 1604-1851 (1983), no. 72, p.170-5], folio (405 x 300mm.), T. Bensley for T. Malton, 1792-[1801]Footnotes:ONE OF THE FIRST AND FINEST SERIES OF LONDON VIEWS - RARE HAND-COLOURED COPY IN A HANDSOME BAYNTUN RIVIERE BINDING.Thomas Malton (1748-1804) exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy, and was principally known for his views of the capital's streets, squares and buildings. He also designed scenery for Covent Garden Theatre and ran a drawing school whose students included Turner and Girtin. The 100 meticulously observed views in the Picturesque Tour Through London were all composed, engraved and aquatinted by Malton, a remarkable endeavour at a time when the aquatint process was still in its infancy in England. The work represents the first large collection of aquatints of London, or anywhere else in the country, and includes views of Chelsea Hospital, Hyde Park, Grosvenor Square, Westminster Abbey, The Horse Guards, Charing Cross, St. Martin's in the Fields, The Adelphi, Covent Garden, Somerset House, St. Paul's, Mansion House, The Bank of England, Royal Exchange and Greenwich Hospital.'The Picturesque Tour is remarkable, if not unique, in that the 100 large plates of which it is composed were all engraved and aquatinted by the artist in person' (Bernard Adam). 'Like Horwood's Plan – and unlike works like Modern London or the Microcosm – Malton's book was pitched as a solo endeavour, a vision of the city produced by a man keen to establish his cultural credentials and capable of fine artistry, accurate perception, technological innovation and skilful composition... London looms in Malton in ways that most other contemporary illustrations fail to capture. The metropolis is not a threatening city in his works, but it is one that reaches up in great spires and vaulting arches, a place of proud ingenuity and soaring, untroubled magnificence' (Matthew Sangster, www.romanticlondon.org/maltons-picturesque-tour-intro/).This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: •• Zero rated for VAT, no VAT will be added to the Hammer Price or the Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

PALESTINE - BRITISH MANDATEAn archive of 'Confidential' administrative reports, testimonies, correspondence with General Montgomery, photographs, and ephemera, from the archive of Morris Bailey O.B.E., District Commissioner in Haifa and Samaria during the British Mandate in Palestine, including: Approximately 20 mimeographed or typescript reports or copy correspondence relating to Bailey's role as administrator for the British Mandate, together approximately 100 pages, a few with manuscript annotations, several countersigned by Bailey with his initials or with his purple stamp, some headed 'Secret and Personal', 'Confidential', etc., 4to, c.1921-1944[Montgomery] Four autograph letters signed by General Montgomery ('B.L. Montgomery') to Bailey ('My dear Bailey'), relating to disagreements over how to 'quell the rebellion [by the local Arab population] - which is really the only thing that matters', Montgomery uncharacteristically stating that 'it was my fault' that their differences had escalated, and addressing Bailey's 'complaint about the incident at the B.S.S. I... have dealt with the office concerned, he will be wiser in future...', and promising to address 'municipal scavenging... Personally I object to dirty streets, and I shall therefore arrest the municipal workers whenever they go on strike', together 7 pages, paper headed 'Headquarter 8th Division, Haifa, Palestine', dated 17 January-1 April 1939; together with associated copy correspondence and reports'Changing Palestine', from National Geographic, specially bound 40-page article, inscribed to Bailey by the author, Edward Keith-Roach, District Commissioner of North Palestine, 1934[King Faisal I of Iraq] Items relating to the reception on 14 September 1933 of the body of King Faisal I of Iraq at Haifa, en route for Baghdad, aboard H.M.S. Despatch where 'the streets... were thronged throughout the night... many thousands of Arab spectators, drawn from all parts of Palestine and from Trans-Jordan...', including 5 press photographs (one showing Morris Bailey alongside Edward Keith-Roach), and a decorative metal nail removed from the coffin (to allow it to fit onto the aeroplane to Baghdad) made into a paperweight[Haile Selassie] Four photographs of Bailey welcoming the exiled Emperor Haile Selassie on his arrival in Haifa in 1935, together with a newspaper cutting of the occasionMargaret Bailey. Manuscript account of her life in the Holy Land in 1920s-40s, rich in detail of every day life, engagements with the Bedouin, Arab chiefs and militia, local women, and her husband Morris' work, approximately 200 pages, ink on paper, many corrections and some loose pages inserted, contemporary cloth, 4to, c.1945; 'Holy Week in Jerusalem [in 1940]' including a 14-page account with mention of her meeting with the 7-year old King Faisal II of Iraq; and 4 other typescript articles by Margaret on local ceremoniesEphemera, including a portrait photograph of Bailey, military commendations for his WWI actions, and newspaper cuttings relating to his service in Palestine, a collection of 10 folding maps, including sheets 1-6 of the Palestine Survey map of Palestine, c.1921-1944 (quantity)Footnotes:'THERE IS CONSIDERABLE APPREHENSION, FEAR AND DISMAY' - Confidential papers shedding a light on the conflicting interests of the British administration, Arab and Jewish populations during the British Mandate of the 1920-30s, from the archive of Morris Bailey, who in 1921 was Assistant Governor to Beersheba District, and was appointed as District Commissioner to the North Palestine regions in 1933. The earlier papers mostly relate to problems of the local economy ('The Fellaheen are virtually slaves of the money-lenders... [so] that on political as well as economic grounds the solution of the Usury problem is the most pressing need of the country') and its impact on local unrest.Bailey's insights on British governance are outlined in his response to a 'personal and confidential' questionnaire (24 June 1921) issued by the High Commissioner, and again in May 1936 when he reports on the fanning of civil unrest amongst both Arabs and Jews by newspaper propaganda, and another (7 June 1936) warning about the 'deep-rooted feeling of despair among all classes of Arabs that it is the intention of the Home Government to swamp them and eventually hand over the country to the Jews', and suggests that economic and political solutions should be prioritised over military ones to suppress strikes and unrest amongst the Arab population. In March 1937 his report on the security situation in Galilee Division states that 'the Safad Jews are hysterical... there is considerable apprehension, fear and dismay...', and suggests measures to prevent 'intimidation of both Arabs and Jews'. Bailey's views were critical of the increasingly punitive measures undertaken by the military to control both Arab and Jewish insurgencies, leading to clashes with General Bernard L. Montgomery, chief of the 8th Infantry Division at Haifa. Montgomery is forced to write an apology to Bailey ('I am glad we have made it up. It was my fault', 19 Jan. 1939), whilst Harold MacMichael, the British Commissioner at Government House, writes to Bailey stating that whilst his difference of opinion with Montgomery 'is perfectly legitimate... I do not like the way it is put. It is provocative' (16 January 1939).Provenance: Morris Bailey O.B.E, District Commissioner of the Northern District of Palestine. He died whilst serving in Palestine in 1944, Edward Keith-Roach noting in his funeral eulogy that Bailey had 'an unrivalled knowledge of peasant life... the many hours he spent on horseback up and down the country-side [led to] many a blood feud being settled due to this intervention and many murders prevented'. Included with the lot is document with the circular ink stamps of 29 mukhtars of the 'Jabal' villages of the Hebron Sub-District offering sympathy on his death, dated 6 January 1944; by descent to the present owner. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

ESQUEMELIN (ALEXANDRE OLIVIER)De Americaensche Zee-Roovers. Behelsende een pertinente en waerachtige Beschrijving van alle de voornaemste Roveryen, en onmenschelijcke wreedheden, die de Engelse en Franse Rovers, tegens de Spanjaerden in America, gepleeght hebben, FIRST EDITION, black letter, additional engraved title-page, section titles 'Piratica America', 12 engraved plates (4 double-page), light toning to text leaves and light occasional offsetting from plates, first gathering washed, nineteenth century cerise morocco by Riviere with gilt decoration on covers and spine, marbled endpapers and elaborate gilt dentelles, g.e., light wear mostly to extremities of spine, 3 small scratches on upper cover, custom-made red morocco gilt felt-lined clamshell box [USTC 1814458; Howgego E39; Sabin 23468], 8vo (196 x 150mm.), t'Amsterdam, Jan ten Hoorn, boekverkoper, 1678Footnotes:'PIRATICA AMERICA' - EXTREMELY RARE FIRST EDITION. We have traced no complete copy at auction in the last 130 years. Written by Alexandre Olivier Esquemelin (c.1645-1707, also spelled Exquemelin, Esquemeling, Exquemeling, or Oexmelin) the Americaensche Zee-Roovers is a swashbuckling account of pirate exploits in the Caribbean. Known in English as the Buccaneers of America, the book has twelve engravings that bring the fearsome pirate captains to life, and unflinching descriptions of the violence and plunder that both horrified and fascinated readers.Among the colourful characters populating Esquemelin's eye-witness account, none looms larger than the infamous privateer Henry Morgan (1635-1688). As Morgan's confidant and barber-surgeon, Esquemelin had a front-row seat to some of the most audacious raids in pirate history, including the sack of Maracaibo in 1669 and the daring assault on Panama in 1671 (both depicted in the plates). Esquemelin paints a complex portrait of Morgan – as a brilliant tactician and fearless leader, but also a man capable of great cruelty. Following the publication of the English translation in 1684, which accused Morgan of torture and the use of nuns and monks as a human shield, Morgan took steps to discredit the book and successfully brought a libel suit against the book's English publishers William Crooke and Thomas Malthus.'Perhaps no book in any other language was ever the parent of so many imitations' (cf. Sabin) and it became the cornerstone of pirate literature for centuries to come, Esquemelin's vivid prose and intimate knowledge of buccaneer life captivating readers across Europe. First published in this edition in 1678, it was then translated into German (1679), Spanish (1681), English (1684) and French (1686). The German translation is a faithful translation of the original Dutch while the Spanish translation adds new material quite freely and without acknowledgment, and frequently mistranslates the Dutch. The English translation appears to be a translation of the Spanish edition, including most of its deviations from the Dutch original. Finally, the French translation of 1686 is substantially a new work with many additions, including new pirate biographies (Daniel Montbars and Alexandre Bras-de-Fer) and the complete rearrangement of some sections.First editions such as this are of 'extreme rarity' (Sabin) and we have traced no other complete copies at auction since 1894 (Bangs, 25 April 1894, lot 301), with an earlier record in 1884 (Leavitt & Co., 3 March 1884, 909a). Only six copies have been traced in institutions (cf. USTC 1814458). Plates and maps comprise: Bartholomeus de Portugees (Bartholomew the Portuguese), p.40; Rock, de Brasiliaen Genaemt (Rock Brasiliano), p.42; François Lolonois, p.46; The Cruelty of Lolonois, p.60; Johan Morgan (Henry Morgan), p.74; Morgan Attacks Puerto del Principe, Cuba, p.82; Morgan Attacking the Forts at Chagre, Panama, p.88; Afbeeldingh van de Stadt en t'Landtschap van Marcaibo (A Map of the City and Country of Maracaibo), double-page map, p.94; Captain Morgan Torturing Prisoners After the Battle of Maracaibo, p.98; Morgan Destroys the Spanish Fleet at Lake Maracaibo, Venezuela, double-page view, p.102; Afbeeldingh van de Stadt en t'Landtschap van Panama (A Map of the City and Country of Panama), double-page map, p.130; Reskontre van de Spanijaerden tegens de Roovers voor de Stadt Panama, Nevens het Verbranden en Ruijneren van de selve Stadt (The Battle Between the Spaniards and the Pirates for the City of Panama, and the Burning and Ruining of the Same City), double-page view, p.134.Provenance: Charles George Milnes Gaskell (1842-1919, MP for Morley), bookplate. Gaskell was an English lawyer and Liberal Party politician and also a serious book collector. Other books in his collection included a first edition of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein in its original boards (later in the library of Jerome Kern) and a first issue of Robinson Crusoe. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: •• Zero rated for VAT, no VAT will be added to the Hammer Price or the Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

By Pat Wallace', signed in pencil by 28 authors including H.G. Wells, Noel Streatfeild, J.B. As managing editor of William Heinemann, he built up an extraordinary list of talent represented here in correspondence from, amongst others, John Steinbeck, Thomas Wolfe, Rebecca West and her lover H.G. Wells, W. Somerset Maugham, Noël Coward, and J.B. Priestley, a lifelong friend with whom he edited Granta. Frere tended towards the younger, more 'modern' authors, several of whom became close friends, as is shown by these intimate letters, which blur the lines between personal and business relationships: '...He had a flair for detecting talent, and encouraging it, and the gift of establishing friendships with the people he liked and respected, among whom were most of his authors. He prided himself on publishing authors rather than books only...' (obituary, The Times, 6 October 1984). As a young man he had an intense relationship with the novelist Elizabeth von Arnim, nearly 30 years his senior, their hitherto unpublished correspondence also offered here (see lot 91). Many of our letters are addressed to his second wife Patricia Marion Caldecott Wallace (1907-1995), writer, theatre critic and daughter of the author Edgar Wallace, most notably some revealing correspondence from her close friend Daphne du Maurier (see lot 92).After leaving Christ's College, Cambridge, Frere's career began as a journalist on the London Evening News. He joined William Heinemann, a subsidiary of Doubleday, in 1923, rose rapidly within the firm and was made managing director in 1932 under the chairmanship of C.S. Evans when F.N. Doubleday sold his shares after the Wall Street crash. He resigned as president in 1961 and retired a year later to become advisor to The Bodley Head. His papers have remained in the family until now.Provenance: Alexander Stuart Frere (1892-1984); thence by descent to the present owner. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

CONSTANTINOS MALEAS (1879-1928)Côte d'Attique signé en grec en bas à droitehuile sur carton contrecolle sur toile34 x 49,5 cm. (13 3/8 x 49.5in.)signed in Greek lower rightoil on cardboard laid on canvasFootnotes:ProvenancePrivate collection, Athens.ExpositionsAthens, Maleas' studio, Attica Seashores, Autumn 1920-1021 (possibly).LittératureA/Kotidis, Constantinos Maleas (1879-1928),Adams editions, Athens 2000, no. 154, pp.151-152(discussed) p.336 (catalogued), p. 158, fig. 97 (illustrated).Full of life and paganistic fervour, this restless work conveys the artist's emotional response to the landscape, translating a stretch of coastal land into a powerful visual language of form and colour. Using richly layered, dynamic brushwork and a strong, expressive palette, Maleas focuses on nature's colours, shapes, and textures as integral elements to his pictorial arrangement. Rather than resorting to the picturesque, he relies on purely painterly means to create a dynamic tension between nature and abstraction. Instead of merely depicting a landscape, he conveys the impression that we are actually witnessing the process of its birth. Following in the steps of Cezanne, who exhorted painters to look for solidity and discover the enduring character of their subjects, Maleas handled the natural environment not only as coloured patterns of light that would have satisfied an impressionist eye, but also as substantial forms with volume, mass and structure. Similarly, he transcended impressionism in the rendering of space, suggesting recession into depth not by diminution of tonal contrast but through the arrangement of form in a sequence of planes. (Note how the distant mountains are as lucid and vivid as the foreground shrubs). While painting the view in front of him with complete directness, Maleas did so with a deep understanding of the landscape as a complex entity, entrusting his subject to the truth of vision and then recomposing it with freedom and creativity. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

The bold, dramatic steepness of the rugged terrain, the large, close-up shapes of the trees with their Cezannesque corporeality, the sweeping, energetic brushwork in the vein of van Gogh, and the density and texture of the paint itself convey a sense of substance, immediacy, and presence, betraying the sure hand of a master expressionist. The overall development of the oblique design builds up a solid compositional edifice and an architectural organisation of active spaces and vibrant, undulating forms, demonstrating the painter's endeavour to liberate form from visual reality without breaking from the world of appearances. The fluid rhythm of execution becomes the means by which the artist not only paints a view of the landscape but becomes part of it in search of an interpretative approach to nature and a deeper pictorial truth. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
