* CHRIS BUSHE RSW (SCOTTISH b. 1958),THE BLUE DOORoil on canvasimage size 59cm x 41cm, overall size 74cm x 56cm Framed and under glass.Note: Born in Perthshire, Chris Bushe is one of Scotland’s greatest living landscape painters. Initially he studied Archaeology and Ancient History at Edinburgh but from his earliest years he has responded to his fascination with the landscape around rural Aberdeenshire. He was accepted at Gray’s School of Art in the 1980s and forged a career painting landscapes very much in his own style and at odds with the fashionable conceptualism of the day. His paintings have won him a plethora of awards at national exhibitions. His work can be found in the corporate collections of Murray International Metals, Premier Property Group, Aberdeen Hospitals Trust, Grampian Regional Council, Edinburgh Hospitals Trust, Scottish Life, the Royal Bank of Scotland, Scottish & Newcastle, Dundee City Council, Bulthaup, University of Stirling, Turnberry Hotel and Centrica. His many awards include the Morton Fraser Milligan, Russell Flint Trust, Glasgow Arts Club Fellowship, Scottish Arts Club Awards, the RSW Council Award, the RSW McManus Galleries Purchase Prize, the RSW Fotheringham Gallery Award and the RSW The Walter Scott Award. Most recently, Chris has had considerable success at The Discerning Eye winning both the Founder’s £2500 Purchase Prize in 2015 and ING £5,000 Purchase Prize in 2016. In Scotland, his principal gallery is the prestigious Open Eye Gallery (Edinburgh) where, at the time of writing, he is enjoying his most recent solo show "Chasing Light" (4th - 25th June 2022).

* JANE CORSELLIS RWS RCA NEAC (BRITISH b. 1940),UNTITLED watercolour on paper, signedimage size 37cm x 52cm, overall size 63cm x 75cm Mounted, framed and under glass.Note: Jane Corsellis has been a member of the New English Art Club for almost 50 years and a member of the Royal Watercolour Society since 1985. She was a member of the Royal Cambrian Academy and the Royal West of England Academy. Jane is a passionate supporter of figurative painting. To observe closely and record everyday subjects in her own way is the essence of her paintings. Her oils and watercolours and her prints reflect her response to the quality and surprises of light and colour. She constructs her painting with much thought, building a composition which steers towards the abstract but never foregoing the figurative tradition. Sir Kenneth Clark said that “above all else art must be life enhancing” and Jane’s work reveals and celebrates that. Jane has a studio at her home on the River Thames at Chiswick and another in Wales at her house near Newport Pembrokeshire. She has had solo exhibitions in Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, Ottawa, New York and Cardiff as well as in London galleries including Messums, Pattersons, the New Academy Gallery, The Russell Gallery, The Richmond Hill Gallery and Thompson's Gallery.

Beginning her career as a teacher, by the age of twenty-seven she was a full-time artist. Walker is one of the most successful female painters working in Scotland today. Her talent in capturing the ever-changing light of the Scottish landscape is outstanding, and her subtle but strong still life paintings are highly-prized. Work is held in many public and corporate collections worldwide, including the Royal Bank of Scotland and Sara Lee Holdings. * PETER FOYLE,IN THE SHADEoil on canvas, signed, titled versoimage size 36cm x 46cm, overall size 49cm x 59cm Framed.Note: Peter graduated from St. Martin’s School of Art in London in 1986 when he was a finalist in the prestigious ‘Readers Digest Young Illustrators Award.’ After graduating, he practised as a freelance artist and illustrator until 1990 when he and his wife opened the Framework Gallery in Troon in Ayrshire. Peter shows his work in several galleries and exhibitions in Scotland and also recently in China. In recent years he has won several awards including the Royal College of Surgeons and Physicians Award at the Royal Glasgow Institute. Peter was brought up in Dorset where, as a teenager, he could be seen cycling around the country lanes with his easel and paints strapped to his bicycle as he sought out interesting subjects to paint “en plein air.” He won a few awards and sold a number of paintings and completed several commissions while still at school. Much of Peter’s work now depicts the sparkling light of Venice and the sun-dappled cafes of Provence but he is also inspired by the Scottish Coast where they live. Cityscapes of Glasgow and Edinburgh as well as rural landscapes and harbours are all subjects he enjoys painting. Still Life painting has also been a source of inspiration, especially during the recent covid lockdowns. Whereas some artists concentrate on one subject throughout their painting career, Peter prefers to paint whatever gives him a sense of visual excitement, usually because of a special quality of light. He paints almost entirely in oil on Belgian linen but occasionally produces watercolours, especially as sketches when travelling.

* WILLIAM BIRNIE RSW RGI (SCOTTISH 1929 - 2006),EVENING LIGHT, GUBBIO (UMBRIA, ITALY)oil on board, signed and dated '93, titled label versoimage size 101cm x 44cm, overall size 117cm x 62cm Framed. Label verso: Roger BIllcliffe Fine Art, Glasgow.Comment: Like many great Scottish artists before him, Bill Birnie often painted the relationship between human architecture and monumental nature. "Evening Light, Gubbio" is an outstanding late example and the profile and physical dimensions of the picture emphasise the significance of the tree. Note: Bill Birnie studied at Glasgow School of Art under Gilbert Spencer and then at Hospitalfield under Ian Fleming. After graduating, he joined the staff at Hyndland Secondary School in 1952. That same year he was also elected a member of the Society of Scottish Artists (SSA). In 1958, he became a founder member of the Glasgow Group and formed the Glasgow Group Society, of which he was Vice-President for 32 years. In 1965, he was elected a member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour (RSW), a society of which he also became Vice-President and Treasurer. He became Principal Art Teacher at Douglas Academy, near Bearsden, and later at Gryffe High, near Kilbarchan. Bill's abilities not only as a teacher but also as an administrator were noticed by the Department of Education and he was soon appointed Head Examiner in Art for Scotland. He still managed to maintain a very active exhibiting schedule and showed in all the main public galleries and many of Scotland's best commercial galleries. His work was enthusiastically collected and increasingly sought after. He was elected a member of the Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Art (RGI) and of the Paisley Art Institute (PAI). In the early years, he painted from his garden, showing the village of Kilbarchan in its changing seasons, under a quiet blanket of winter snow, or framed in a blazing sunset through autumnal trees. Later visits to France and Italy with his artist wife, Cynthia Wall, whom he married in 1953, brought new subject matter, cafe scenes, vine groves, Italian clifftop villages, and the crumbling facades of palaces and churches of Venice. It was characteristic of the man that when told that his illness was terminal, he calmly put his affairs in order and started work for a final one-man show at the Open Eye Gallery (Edinburgh) the scene of so many of his successful shows. Unsurprisingly, the exhibition was a complete sell-out. In recent years there has been a widely acknowledged acceleration in the prices achieved at auctions around the UK for William Birnie's paintings. In the Scottish Contemporary Art Auction of 8th November 2020 lot 567 "The Red House" a 60 x 90cm oil sold for £3000 (hammer) which, not for the first time in recent years, set a new auction record for a painting by William Birnie.

* JULIAN BARROW (BRITISH 1939-2013),TOWER OF LETHENDYoil on canvas, signed and dated 1977, titled versoimage size 46cm x 62cm, overall size 61cm x 76cmFramed.Provenance: Private Edinburgh collection.Note: The Tower of Lethendy is a Scottish Baronial style house in Perthshire which has been the subject of media interest in 2022. It was widely reported in the Scottish press that the current owner is a Russian Oligarch albeit one who was among the first to openly and strongly condemn the war in Ukraine. The property boasts a heated swimming pool, two tennis courts and an 18 hole golf course. The press and media also reported that The Tower of Lethendy was acquired by the current owner in 2016.Note 2: Julian Barrow was a painter, adept at catching the spirit of a place, who travelled widely. He was born in Longtown, Cumberland, and studied at RWA and Signorina Simi’s Academy in Florence, Italy. He was a full member of Chelsea Arts Club, living nearby, and from 1988 for 23 years was President of Chelsea Art Society. Group shows included RA Summer Exhibition, 1961–99; Paris Salon, 1965; and NEAC, 2002. He had solo exhibitions at Hazlitt, Gooden and Fox 1972–74–77; Morton Morris & Co, 1982–85; Leger Gallery, 1989–92–95; and Fine Art Society 1999–05, plus many others in America and the Middle East. For decades he lived, with his wife Serena, in a magnificent studio on Tite Street in Chelsea (London) in the building formerly occupied at various times by Sargent, Whistler, Glyn Philpot and Augustus John. Julian Barrow was described by James Lees-Milne as “a country house painter par excellence” and his commissions for interiors and exteriors of country estates took him all over England, Scotland, Ireland, and America. He also painted many of the private clubs in London and New York. John Julius Norwich, in his introduction to the catalogue of a one-man show at the Fine Art Society in London in 2005, notes that Barrow’s pictures “radiate a love of life, a joy in light and shade and colour, a grateful appreciation of all the blessedness that lies around us if we can only make the effort to see it. They warm us; they cheer us; they convince us that whatever terrible things happen in the world, there is a beauty there a-plenty for the asking – and for the taking.” Barrow was commissioned to paint "Her Majesty the Queen Addressing Both Houses of Parliament on the Occasion of Her Golden Jubilee in Westminster Hall" (2002) having previously been commissioned to paint "HM The Queen in Westminster Hall Receiving the Jubilee Address on the 25th Anniversary of Her Accession to The Throne" (1977). Both held in the UK Parliament Art Collection. Julian Barrow's paintings are held in large numbers of prestigious private, corporate and public collections in the UK, US, Middle East, India and the Far East.Condition is good overall, with no visible signs of restoration, damage, or known issues. * PAM CARTER DA PAI (SCOTTISH 1952 - 2022),GABLES, GEARY (ISLE OF SKYE)oil on canvas, signed, titled label versoimage size 77cm x 77cm, overall size 97cm x 97cm Framed.Label verso: The Braemar Gallery, Braemar.(The typical gallery price for a 77 x 77cm Pam Carter oil would be a little over £6000) Note 1: It was with great sadness that we learnt of the passing of Pam Carter in May after an illness which she wrote about to her database of buyers on 24th June 2021: "I feel at last I am retiring somewhat due to ill health. I am not painting very much these days as I am struggling with the daily regime of chemo tablets; it’s hard getting the balance of effective medication and quality of life". Note 2: Pam Carter was born in Tanganyika, East Africa to an Austrian mother and Scottish father. At the age of thirteen, she came to Scotland where she schooled at Bearsden Academy. She graduated from Glasgow School of Art in the seventies. "My main inspiration as an artist is in the Scottish landscape and seascape. I enjoy using colour to define contours, structure and changing light sequences. I search out specific viewpoints. I am equally inspired by the rugged isolation of the Western Isles and the dramatic viewpoints of the Eastern coastline. I work predominantly in oil". Pam Carter was unquestionably one of Scotland's most popular and successful contemporary artists. She won numerous awards and prizes, always received significant media attention, has been the subject of many magazine features and had several tv appearances. Her work is widely exhibited but rarely appears at auction. In The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction of 17th April 2022 lot 38 "Luskentyre Reflections" a 46 x 51cm oil (smaller than half the size of "Gables Geary") by Pam Carter sold for £2000 (hammer). Comment: Pam was a special artist and one who enjoyed wide popularity and substantial commercial success. In all our dealings with Pam over the years, she was always generous with her time and quick to provide the background to paintings we had received from private consignors and filling in gaps about locations, dates etc. Pam's work is instantly recognisable and she had that rare gift, even among the best artists, of being able to use the minimum of brushwork to create the maximum visual effect. Her "lines" were those of the natural environment but she knew exactly how to "see" them and portray them on canvas. Despite her commercial success, or perhaps even because of it, Pam's work probably hasn't yet reached the full audience that it so richly deserves. She exhibited frequently at numerous galleries in Scotland and gallery owners were inevitably in a queue to secure her work. Typically, Pam showed loyalty to those who were the first to support her when she was a relative unknown. Talented artists always wish to be remembered by their work and Pam Carter can be certain of that, but she'll also be remembered with great affection by all those who had the good fortune to meet her or know her.Condition is good overall, with no visible signs of restoration, damage, or known issues.

His work is successfully shown in many galleries in England, Scotland and abroad, most recently in Istanbul, where he was invited, as a result of commission work, to have a solo exhibition at the British Embassy, and a subsequent solo at one of the premier galleries in the city. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society for Arts, London, in November 2004. In recent years exhibition venues have included: Rowles Fine Arts, Strathearn Gallery, Greens & Blues Gallery, Morningside Gallery, Annan Gallery, Iona House Gallery, Alpha Gallery, Queens Gallery, Gigha Gallery and Frames Gallery. In The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction of 9th May 2021, two Iona paintings by Erni Upton (lots 787 & 789) sold for prices of £2000 & £2800 (hammer) and in the 17th April 2022 auction lot 198 "Blaishie Day,Turnberry" (a 51 x 101cm oil) sold for £2000 (hammer).

* PETER KING (SCOTTISH b. 1953),WINTER LANDSCAPEoil on canvas, signedimage size 69cm x 69cm, overall size 84cm x 84cm Framed and under glass.Note: Peter King was born in Glasgow in 1953. He studied art at The Glasgow School of Art under the tutelage of David Donaldson RSA and Duncan Shanks RSA. He taught Art and Design in Scottish schools for over 30 years and holds a senior marker's position with S.Q.A. In 2010 he retired from teaching to focus entirely on painting professionally. Peter exhibits regularly at the Royal Scottish Academy and The Royal Glasgow Institute. His work is represented in collections across the UK, Europe, North America and Japan. The Sunday Times Magazine (April Edition 2000) featured his painting in an article on contemporary British Landscape Painting. In 2010, Peter was awarded the coveted House for an Art Lover Award by the RGI. The light, colour and weathered landscape of Kintyre, The Clyde Valley and the vast panorama of land and sky dominated by Tinto Hill and the Scottish Borders are a constant source of ideas and inspiration. He has developed his paintings from a range of motifs, which he constantly returns to and reinterprets, focusing on aspects of changing moods of light, weather and seasons. The sources of his ideas are the seasonal effects of nature on the surrounding environment. Colour and the tactile qualities of paint are essential to his painting style; the marks, free paint and the textured shapes become field, wood and sky. Peter King's paintings are exhibited widely in galleries including: The Lime Tree Gallery (Long Melford & Bristol), Red Rag Gallery (Cotswolds), Morningside Gallery (Edinburgh), ARTeries Gallery (Glasgow), Annan Gallery (Glasgow), Greens & Blues Gallery (North Berwick), Strathearn Gallery (Crieff), Thompson's Gallery (London & Aldeburgh), Walker Gallery (Harrogate) and Lemond Gallery (Glasgow).

* CLAIRE HARKESS RSW (SCOTTISH b. 1970),ROO IIwatercolour on paper, signed, titled versoimage size 26cm x 15cm, overall size 47cm x 35cm Mounted, framed and under glass.Note: Claire Harkess was born in Ayr, Scotland, graduating from Glasgow School of Art in the early 1990s. In recent years her painting has taken her to fragile lands to study and interpret life on the edge. Antarctica, Outback Australia and St Kilda are all places where, in such extreme environments, survival is difficult and the balance of life is delicate. Harkess has also worked on the Galápagos Islands, made famous by Charles Darwin’s ‘The Origin of the Species’. This isolated volcanic outpost remained relatively untouched by man, evolving to become one of the World’s unique ecosystems. The balance present in nature is clearly communicated through Claire's paintings. Painting in watercolour or gouache offers a unique directness; the essential qualities of light and energy present in the natural world are the very essence of the medium itself. The delicacy of her palette and oriental economy of her mark-making creates a subtle tension representing a world that is ‘holding still’, giving a sense of freedom, spirit, time and place. Claire's work is exhibited at The Scottish Gallery, where her most recent highly successful solo show was in March 2022, and at other prestigious galleries around the UK.
