Cheshire Highwayman.- Wike (Benjamin) [Broadside] The Last Dying Words and Confession of Benjamin Wike, alias John Smith, who was Tried, Cast, & Condemned for Highway Robbery, near Knutsford, in Cheshire, and was executed on Saturday, 20th of August, 1785, only edition, double-column text printed beneath woodcut illustration, frayed at edges, slightly affecting woodcut and text in lower left corner, repairs to verso with old newspaper, upper edge mounted on card, light water-stain, folio (375 x 231mm.), n.p., 1785.⁂ Only one other copy of this broadside has been traced - in Manchester University Library. Very few details of the life of Benjamin Wike are available, although this broadside provides good information on his criminal activities. There is mention of a Benjamin Wike of Barnsley in the Annual Register of 1777 - he challenged James Cheaven "the noted bruiser" to a fight "for five guineas a side" which he won despite breaking his arm during the fight.
