Signed and dated `-1 29`, oil on canvas 32 x 42cm. Exhibited: London Artists' Association; London, The Leicester Galleries, `Exhibition of the Collection of the late Sir Hugh Walpole, part 2`, possibly May 1945 Provenance: Hugh Walpole; R. H. Boyd; thence by descent * Hugh Walpole was an eager collector of Grant's work and this subject is typical of the artist's work in the late 1920s and early1930s, executed in this swift and spontaneous manner. The lidded vase is a familiar motif in compositions from this period but this is more probably a London subject or one painted at Vanessa Bell's house in Cassis than at Charleston. We are very grateful to Richard Shone for his assistance with cataloguing this lot. *Condition: Good condition; in need of a light clean.
Quarter length, wearing a pale grey dress with light blue mantle affixed with pearl clasp, also wearing pearl jewellery, within a painted oval, oil on canvas 74.5 x 62.5cm. Provenance: By descent in the family of the sitter. *Condition: Unlined; four patched repairs verso; some flaked losses; some wear; some craquelure and scattered retouching.
Seated half length, wearing a russet dress and ochre mantle, seated upon a sofa, a swag and pillar beyond, distant landscape, oil on panel 34 x 28cm. Provenance: By descent in the family of the sitter. The sitter inherited the estate of Naseby in Northamptonshire and was renowned for her beauty as much as her wealth. She married her cousin John Purcell and, conventionally, took his surname until 1818. In that year, her husband changed his own surname to Fitzgerald whereupon she became Mrs John Fitzgerald. Her son, Edward (1809-1883), who translated `The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam` in 1859, disliked it: `I somehow detest my own scrolloping surname`. *Condition: Some slight craquelure; needs a light clean; slight paint separation on sitter's right hip.
