ANDERSEN HANS CHRISTIAN: (1805-1875) Danish Author & Poet, noted for his Children`s stories. Rare A.Q.S., Hans Christian Andersen, (a scarce example of his English signature), one page, oblong 8vo, Gad`s Hill Place, Rochester, Kent, n.d. (1857). In blue fountain pen ink Andersen has penned a quotation which he identifies as being from a work by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, `Often in a wooden house a golden room we find` Signed and dated immediately beneath the quotation. The circular stamp of the noted Rawlins collection appears in the lower right corner. An attractive example. Some light traces of former mounting, particularly to the edges, not affecting the text or signature. About VG Andersen penned this quotation at the home of Charles Dickens during his visit in 1857. He stayed with Dickens for five weeks, oblivious to Dickens` increasingly blatant hints for him to leave. Dickens` daughter said of Andersen `He was a bony bore, and stayed on and on`. Shortly after Andersen left, Dickens published David Copperfield featuring the obsequious Uriah Heep, who is said to have been inspired by Andersen. The Dane greatly enjoyed the visit and never understood why Dickens stopped answering his letters. The quotation, penned in a blue ink identical to that which Dickens himself favoured, is reproduced by Ray Rawlins in his book The Guinness Book of World Autographs (1977, page 4) and is actually only the second half of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow`s famous quotation, `Intelligence and Courtesy not always are combined; often in a wooden house a golden room we find`.

I hope it will be a great success!` The postage stamp has been neatly removed and there is a large, light brown stain covering a large proportion of the text (but not signature) although it remains completely legible. The stain also lightly affects a large portion of the image. FR

Scott writes regarding an unspecified cause, `I have no other apology for complying with the request of the poor man (my assistant in the Register Room) than that he has really suffered the loss which he states and that he has a large family. All of course which we can decree if your Lord`s will is to give his case a serious perusal being of that nature which is not perhaps so easily understood….Baron Hume (?) is acquainted with all the merits of the case but whether there can be any remedy for the hardship sustained is a question on which I cannot presume to say anything.` With integral address leaf (`Right Honble. Lord Chief Baron`) bearing three areas of paper loss. Some very light, extremely minor age toning to the left edge, about VG

Lots of money to start them & the enthusiastic support of manufacturers whose factories are to be moved, which things, I take it, are not easy to come by.’ Some very light age toning, otherwise VG
DOYLE ARTHUR CONAN: (1859-1930) Scottish Author, creator of Sherlock Holmes. A scarce, original signed 2.5 x 4 photograph depicting a young man seated in a full length pose with a `spirit` girl appearing to be sat on his knee. A printed caption at the base of the photographer`s mount states `This photograph was taken with ONE exposure only`. Signed (`Arthur Conan Doyle`) in bold dark fountain pen ink with his name alone to the lower white border of the image. A couple of very minor, light spots of foxing, VG It is possible that these photograph were created by one of the Crewe Circle, a group of six photographers led by the controversial medium William Hope (1863-1933). Following World War I support for the Crew Circle grew as the grieving relatives of those who lost their lives in the War sought a means of contacting their loved ones. The work of the photographers was investigated on several occasions, most notably by Harry Price on behalf of the Society for Physical Research. Price collected evidence that members of the Crew Circle were substituting glass plates bearing ghostly images in order to produce spirit photographs and, in 1922, published his findings. However, many ardent supporters spoke out on behalf of the Crew Circle, the most famous being Doyle. It is likely that Doyle signed these photographs as an attestation as to their authenticity.
