Phonograph: an early wax cylinder phonograph mechanism, of lacquered brass and iron or steel construction, with reproducer arm pivoted to the rear guide, incorporating a simple shaving device and angled for an audience in front of the machine, lever-operated rising straight-edge, coarse feedscrew friction driven from the mandrel shaft, governor in wrought iron frame and oak baseboard – 19 x 7½ in (no reproducer or motor, lacking centre bearing for mandrel shaft) There are several interesting differences from the standard Edison design which clearly inspired this phonograph; the long mandrel arm is rendered redundant by the use of a separate feedscrew, driven by friction and geared down from the mandrel shaft. The feed nut is adjustable, and can be disengaged independently of the carrier arm. The arm itself face to what would normally be the rear (i.e. away from the operator), and is set very high above the mandrel, with a recess for a reproducer with three projections to its circumference. The ingeniuos lift mechanism also operates what appears to be an electrical switch, although there is no sign of any electrical connection to it front the two terminals at one end of the board. The motor must have been separate, presumably connected by a conventional flat belt to the mandrel pulley, but with a separate cord drive to the governor. Overall condition is good, unrestored, with light surface corrosion to the ferrous parts and much of the lacquer missing from the brass.
