25 Cents. 1880-H. Narrow 0. ICCS graded Very Choice Uncirculated-64. The 1880H 25 cent was minted in comparatively small quantities, just 400,000 pieces, when set against the combined productions of 2.6 million coins from the previous two strikings. This seems to be reflected in the population of certified coins, with no examples achieving Gem status from either ICCS or PCGS. This example is well struck for the type, showing light champagne toning with good detail throughout and subtle amorphous lustre. Of note is some clear doubling of the E in REGINA. Tied 1 of only 3 finest graded by ICCS.
25 Cents. 1890-H. ICCS graded Gem Uncirculated-65. Fully brilliant and untoned, with frosty clear surfaces and well-struck details. An abundance of lustre graces both obverse and reverse. Only a few light traces of contact in the vicinity of the date and below the bust separate this coin from its two finer rivals certified by ICCS, in MS-66 and MS-67 respectively.
25 Cents. 1892. ICCS graded Gem Uncirculated-65. Light straw toning complements this coin's ample lively lustre. The strike is nearly full, with only trace weakness in the uppermost leaves at 11 o'clock. The reverse surfaces are virtually undisturbed, while only a few light contacts on the reverse hold this coin back from a superior grade. Tied 1 of only 5 finest graded by ICCS.
1 Dollar. 1936. ICCS graded Superb Gem Uncirculated-66. While the reverse design remained unchanged for the second issue of Canada's silver dollar, the obverse die featuring the design of Sir E.B. MacKennal, first prepared in 1911, was put into service. This piece exhibits deeply lustrous surfaces overlaid with balanced light bronze toning. Exceptionally detailed throughout the obverse crown and regalia, with only a few pinpoint traces of contact separating this coin from the single MS-67 attributed by ICCS. An outstanding gem.
1 Dollar. 1948. ICCS graded Superb Gem Uncirculated-66. Upon the arrival of the master tools for the new, redesigned obverse, minting of the 1947 Maple Leaf coins was ceased and regular strikings began. The brief production run of dollars that followed yielded a scant 18,780 pieces, which in time would prove to be the official lowest mintage for the denomination. Desired by all but obtained by few, the 1948 silver dollar remains a cornerstone of every serious collection of Canadian coins, and none more so than this ultimate example, the solo finest mint-state example in the ICCS census. A singularly immaculate and alluring coin; the pristine fields are unmistakably mirrored, but careful observation will also reveal a trace of light cartwheel lustre on the obverse. A touch of mint frost on the hair lends the bust a cameo appearance, while a few wisps of straw-gold toning are all but indistinguishable from the otherwise brilliant surfaces. The ICCS census lists only a single coin graded as MS-66, while PCGS has graded only two examples in an equivalent grade. Spirited bidding is to be expected on this colossal rarity.
Geological Prehnite on Quartz Flower Mineral Specimen Two light green globular aggregates of prehnite (calcium aluminium silicate) rest on a floral spray of quartz crystals from Hunan Province, China; in old white card tray. 118 grams, 64mm (2 1/2"). From a historic ‘Victorian Museum’ collection; from the stock of Gregory, Bottley & Lloyd (1981-2014); formerly with Gregory, Bottley & Co. (1932-1981) and previously with J. R. Gregory & Co. (1898-1932); originally in the collection of the famous James Reynolds Gregory (1858-1898), with old Gregory, Bottley & Lloyd identification card. This item is part of a historic collection of fossils and minerals which has recently been reviewed by leading geological expert Dr. Ronald Bonewitz. Cf. Bonewitz, Dr. Ronald Louis Smithsonian Rock and Gem, (2008), p.269. James Reynolds Gregory (1832-1899) was one of the principle London mineral and fossil dealers during the second half of the 19th century. The company he founded was one of the longest surviving geological suppliers in the world, second only to Kranz of Germany. In 1858 James Gregory established his business selling polished stones, minerals and fossils from premises in King William Street. A few years later he moved to premises in Golden Square, Soho. He won prize medals at exhibitions in Paris (1867), Sydney (1879) and London (1862 and 1883"). He also formed a superb collection of meteorites, which was later sold by his sons to the Natural History Museum, London. On the death of his father in 1899 Albert Gregory took over the business, dealing from premises in Kensington, then 30 Old Church Street in Chelsea. He eventually sold the company in 1932 to Percy Bottley, and after his death in 1982 the premises were sold. The company was then acquired by Brian Lloyd who had started the Natural History sales at Sotheby's before dealing from his own premises in Pall Mall. Gregory, Bottley & Lloyd, as it became known, traded from Ricket Street and later Seagrave Road in Fulham. In 2008 the business and all of the stock and Victorian cabinets were moved out of London to Walmer in Kent. On the eventual retirement of Brian and Mary Lloyd in 2014, with none of their family interested in taking over the business, the stock was sold and is now dispersed. [No Reserve] Very fine condition, a good size for display.
