Ca. 350 BC.A small cup from the Attic region, crafted with exquisite attention to detail. The hemispherical cup is seamlessly joined with a flared concave foot, and the walls of the cup gently curve inward. The entire surface, except for the interior of the foot, is adorned with a lustrous black glossy glaze that shimmers with the slightest hint of light. This cup is a prime example of the Attic black glaze ceramics that were widely used in domestic settings during the ancient Greek period. The Attic potters were known for their masterful use of black glaze, which was achieved by firing the clay at a high temperature in an oxygen-poor environment. The resulting glaze had a deep, lustrous black color and a smooth, glossy surface that was both durable and easy to clean. Domestic use of ceramics in ancient Greece was widespread, with cups and other vessels being used for a variety of purposes, from drinking and dining to storage and display. The Attic black glaze ceramics were particularly prized for their beauty and durability, and were often decorated with intricate patterns and designs that added to their aesthetic appeal.Size: L:50mm / W:80mm ; 60gProvenance: Private London collection, B.A.; formerly in pre-2000 European collection.

Los 100

Ca. AD 1 - 100.A terracotta oil lamp boasting a distinctive reddish hue and a charming, recessed tondo adorned with a dolphin in front of the rudder. The dolphin, a recurring motif in ancient Roman art, was often associated with Venus, the goddess of love and beauty, and represented good luck and protection during sea voyages. The lamp is equipped with a looped handle to the rear and a frontal round-tipped spout, allowing for easy handling and use. The flat base provides a sturdy foundation for the lamp, ensuring stability during use. In ancient Roman society, oil lamps were an essential source of artificial light and played a significant role in daily life. They were used for practical purposes, such as providing light for reading, writing, and cooking, as well as for decorative and symbolic purposes, such as funerary offerings and religious ceremonies. The use of oil lamps in ancient Rome extended beyond the practicalities of illumination, as they often served as a medium for artistic expression and cultural exchange. For a similar lamp, see the Richard and Carole Cocks Art Museum, item 2013.HB.62.Size: L:105mm / W:75mm ; 65gProvenance: Property of a London Ancient Art gallery, formerly acquired in Monaco.

There is also some remaining black pigment on the chest. This ushabti is flat-backed, resting against a pillar and standing atop a square base with crossed arms. Ca. 200 - 100 BC.A pottery unguentarium, a vessel that was specifically designed for holding unguent, a type of perfumed oil or balm used in ancient times. This container features an inverted piriform body with a small splayed foot, giving it a graceful and elegant form. The cylindrical neck of the vessel leads to an everted rim with a rounded lip, which is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. The exterior of the unguentarium is adorned with a rich black glaze that covers most of the body, creating a striking contrast with the unglazed bottom of the vessel. The glaze is expertly applied, creating a smooth and lustrous surface that enhances the beauty of the piece. The use of a black glaze on the unguentarium was not only decorative but also practical, as it would have protected the contents of the vessel from light and air, helping to preserve the unguent's fragrance and quality. Unguents were an essential part of daily life in the Hellenistic world, used for a variety of purposes, including personal hygiene, medical treatments, and religious rituals. They were often made from natural ingredients, such as olive oil, beeswax, and various herbs and spices, and were highly valued for their luxurious and therapeutic properties. The use of unguents was particularly popular among women, who would apply them to their hair and skin as part of their beauty regimen. Cf. The Princetown University Art Museum, Object Number y454.Size: L:75mm / W:40mm ; 50gProvenance: Private London collection, B.A.; formerly in pre-2000 European collection.

STATUETTE D'AVALOKITESHVARA SAHASRABHUJA EKADASAMUKHA EN ALLIAGE DE CUIVRE DORÉTIBET CENTRAL, VERS XVE SIÈCLE Himalayan Art Resources item no. 1813 44 cm (17 1/4 in.) high  Footnotes:A GILT COPPER ALLOY FIGURE OF AVALOKITESHVARA SAHASRABHUJA EKADASAMUKHA  CENTRAL TIBET, CIRCA 15TH CENTURY  Published  Meinrad Maria Grewenig & Eberhard Rist (eds), Buddha: 2000 years of Buddhist Art, 232 Masterpieces, Völklingen, 2016, p. 423, no. 184.  Exhibited  Buddha: 2000 Years of Buddhist Art, 232 Masterpieces, Völklingen, 24 June 2016 —19 February 2017.  This tall gilt bronze represents Avalokiteshvara Sahasrabhuja Ekadasamukha—the All Seeing, All Encompassing Lord with One Thousand Hands and Eleven Faces—whose compassionate gaze extends to every corner of the world. The figure's iconography traces as far back as to an Indian stone relief carved in the 5th or 6th century at the rock-cut Buddhist caves of Kanheri, India. Iconographic treatises translated from Sanskrit to Chinese around the 6th century indicate the early dissemination of this form into Kashmir, Central Asia, Tang China, and the Tibetan Empire. Since the reign of the first Dharma King of the Yarlung Dynasty, Songtsen Gampo (604-50), Avalokiteshvara has been the primary tutelary deity of Tibet. Drawing on an iconographic vocabulary of many heads and arms to confer cosmic supremacy on the Great Bodhisattva, this form of Avalokiteshvara was widely revered and further developed by the Palmo and Jowo traditions, modeling the deity with benign features except for the penultimate wrathful head. Retaining its original, gilded base plate, this image of Avalokiteshvara is executed in a refined 15th-century style emerging from a renaissance of Tibetan art, religion, and culture. Its facial modeling, together with the thin, incised lines of floral decoration with blackened silhouettes, nod to the work of Sonam Gyaltsen, a master artist active in Shigatse, c.1430, who contributed to, or perhaps created, one of Tibet's finest traditions in gilded sculpture. Also, the flowers gracing the lower garment, particularly the floral sprays gently floating in place, are nearly identical to the Chinese silk damasks gifted to Tibet during the early Ming dynasty. Rare examples include a Yongle period (1403-24) temple hanging of Shadakshari Lokeshvara in yellow silk that was sold at Bonhams, Hong Kong, 30 November 2022, lot 42, and another in red that was gifted by Sir Joseph Hotung to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (fig.1; 2002.271). For examples of Tibetan gilt bronzes of similar quality depicting Avalokiteshvara with eleven faces, see a smaller figure published in, The Light of the Buddha: Buddhist Sculptures of the Palace Museum and Zhiguan Museum of Fine Art, 2019, pp. 402-3, no. 110. Also compare the Avalokiteshvara identified by inscription to have been made by Sonam Gyaltsen, sold at Bonhams, New York, 19 March 2018, lot 3033. For the figures listed in this essay, please refer to our printed or digital catalogue. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a reduced rate of 5.5% on the hammer price and the prevailing rate on buyer's premium if the item remains in EU.
