First edition. - Contemp. half leather with label on the back and some spine gilding (slightly rubbed). Astronomie - - Christian Huygens. Kosmotheoros, sive de terris coelestibus, earumque ornatu, conjecturae. Den Haag, A. Moetjens, 1698. 1 Bll., 144 S. Moderner Ldr. mit reicher Blindprägung, reicher RVergoldung und goldenem RTitel. Dictionary of Scientific Biography VI 597-613, L. Thorndike, A history of magic and experimental science VII, 634 ff, Bierens de Haan 2226, Poggendorff I, col. 1165, Thijssen-Schoute, L., Nederlands Cartesianisme, S. 64 - 68, Welcome, III, S. 324. (Vgl. Obst, Reinkarnation, Weltgeschichte einer Idee) First edition of the famous work . The treatise is in two parts, which is intended to prove the probability of the assumption that in his Copernican world view, there are other inhabited planets in space besides the Earth. The first book, based on a survey of doxography (Brahe, Bruno Cusanus and Kepler, among others), develops the argument that the other planets of the solar system are probably Earth-like and are home to plants, animals and rational beings who are thought to be endowed with the same kind of reason and similar senses as humans. Huygens draws a vivid picture of what they might look like and how they might live (ships and houses, society, writing, science, music). The second book contains a discussion of the structure of the solar system and the universe, which also deals with the Cartesian vortex theory of planetary motion. After a review of Kircher's Iter extaticum, Huygens presents the conditions on the planets from Mercury to Saturn, the Earth's moon, the moons of other planets, and finally the Sun, taking into account the fixed stars as other Suns orbited by even more planets. The treatise was published posthumously by Huygens' brother Constantijn, to whom the work is also dedicated. The book became extremely popular and was translated into several languages shortly after its publication. Huygens (1629-1695) was a Dutch astronomer, mathematician and physicist. Although he never used the infinitesimal calculus developed during his lifetime, Huygens is considered one of the leading mathematicians and physicists of the 17th century. He is the founder of the wave theory of light, formulated a principle of relativity in his investigations of elastic impact and constructed the first pendulum clocks. With telescopes improved by him, he made important astronomical discoveries. "The astronomer and physicist Christian Huygens (1629-1695) made scientific claims in his work Kosmotheros, published in 1698, for the thesis of the animation of other planets by plants, animals and thinking beings. He referred to preliminary work by Nikolaus von Kues, Giodano Bruno and Tycho Brahe. (Cf. fruit, reincarnation, world history of an idea)
Samon Valley culture, 800 BC-200 AD. The translucent stone of a pale to iron red color with natural dark and light inclusions, finely carved and incised to represent a deity standing upright with the legs close together and the arms folded in front of the chest. Pierced through the sides to allow suspension as a pendant. This piece was personally examined by Burmese American archaeologist and gemologist Terence Tan, a leading expert in Pyu art and Burmese gemstones, and Hungarian gemologist Dr. József Takács. Their analysis finds that the stone is an agate of a very rare color and the talisman is original, ancient, cut by hand with carving, chiseling, boring, and grinding. The color is original and natural. The stone has been cleaned in a tumbler and re-polished by hand to a smooth and shiny surface. There are clear marks of authentic ancient craftsmanship. The holes are ancient, handmade, irregular, and funnel-shaped. A certificate signed by Dr. Zelnik attesting to the above will be handed to the winning bidder upon request.Provenance: Ex-Collection of The Zelnik István Southeast Asian Gold Museum. Pyu city-states, 2nd-10th century. The translucent stone of a light to brownish cream tone with bands of yellow, brown, and grey as well as natural white inclusions, skillfully carved and neatly incised to depict a tiger with the back arched and the front paws extended forwards as if preparing to pounce at its prey. Pierced through the tiger’s mouth and tail to allow suspension as a pendant. This piece was personally examined by Burmese American archaeologist and gemologist Terence Tan, a leading expert in Pyu art and Burmese gemstones, and Hungarian gemologist Dr. József Takács. Their analysis finds that the stone is a natural banded ‘honey’ agate and the talisman is original, ancient, cut by hand with carving, chiseling, boring and grinding. The color is rare, original, and natural. The stone has been cleaned in a tumbler and re-polished by hand to a smooth and shiny surface while preserving the fine ancient patina. There are no traces of later dying in the recesses of the stone. The marks of authentic ancient craftsmanship are still visible. The holes are ancient, handmade, irregular, and funnel-shaped. Pyu city-states, 2nd-10th century. The semi-translucent stone of a mottled spinach-green tone with natural light and dark inclusions, skillfully carved and neatly incised to depict a tiger looking forwards with a short tail and almost straight back. Their analysis finds that the stone is an aventurine and the talisman is original, ancient, cut by hand with carving, boring and grinding. The color is original and natural. There are no traces of dye in the recesses or on the surface of the stone. There are clearly visible traces of ancient primitive tools on the surface. The stone has been cleaned by hand and re-polished; the fine ancient patina has been preserved. The holes are ancient, irregular, and funnel-shaped. A Nuffield 4DM/Universal Four Diesel-engined farm tractor registration no. MVV 923 first registered in this country on 21/05/1999, although the tractor is obviously earlier. The blue V5C present states that the tractor has a capacity of 3,400 cc. is classified as an Historic Vehicle and "was registered/used overseas, declared manufactured 1955". The frame serial no. is: 4DM/792-4333-L, the engine serial no. is: 34TP/B/D 65608, she is fitted with new 12.4" x 36" rear tyres and has a belt pulley fitted as well as a rev-counter showing 2,907 hours, a horn, road lighting and a rear work-light. Rear hydraulic links and a top link are present as is a swinging draw-bar, the tool-box contains a large Allen key for the gearbox oil filler. A brass plate is attached stating - "W.I. Hampshire, Agricultural Agents, Raglan, Mon". The tractor appears to be live-drive, presumably indicated by the "L" suffix in the serial number, she also has a differential lock. The dash panel includes an ammeter, oil pressure and water temperature gauges. This tractor has formed part of the vendor's collection of Nuffield tractors and has been restored and improved at considerable expense in his period of ownership which commenced on the 25/06/1999. A lovely straight tractor capable of real work, starting on the button. SUBSEQUENT TO SOME FETTLING OF THE INJECTOR PUMP AND WITH THE FITTING OF A NEW AIR -GOVERNOR DIAPHRAGM THE ENGINE IDLES VERY SMOOTHLY AND THE GOVERNOR RESPONDS PERFECTLY. A Driver's Handbook is to be sold with the tractor. ***N.B. - THE BUYER'S PREMIUM ON THIS LOT WILL BE 10% + V.A.T. A John Deere 5500 N Four Wheel Drive Diesel-engined Farm/Orchard/Vineyard Tractor, VE51 XZR first registered on 13/02/2002 and in very presentable order with surprisingly low hours showing (2553.2) and understood to be correct. A very capable; if uncommon, model with some 83 h.p. available from the turbo-charged 3.9 litre (239 cubic inch) four cylinder engine. The tractor has 12 forward and 12 reverse gears with a shuttle selector as well as two-speed P.T.O. The cab is fitted with air conditioning (not tried in the current cold spell), there are 3 spool valves, a hydraulically levelling rear link lift-arm, fully operational lights including a rotating beacon and a rear work-light, a swinging draw-bar and a top link. A front weight is fitted with the facility to hang additional wafer weights. She is very well shod, running on Good-Year 13.8 R28 radial rear tyres and on BKT 7.50 x 18 front tyres. As she is configured at the present time she is only 58" wide at the rear but with reconfiguring could be widened considerably, which would render her more suitable for general farm duties. This tractor has remained at the same premises since new and has been the subject of regular routine servicing and has; as the condition indicates, been kept under cover. ***N.B. THE BUYERS PREMIUM ON THIS LOT 10% + V.A.T. (Total Premium 12%). -- If purchased via the-saleroom.com an additional 5% + V.A.T. will be added (Total 18%)*** THE LOCAL VENDORS ARE V.A.T.
