λAfter Roger de Minvielle, (French 1897-1965), a patinated bronze equestrian group entitled Taine, later cast after a model from circa 1932, the rider portrayed in Cadre Noir riding cap and attire, seated atop a naturalistically modelled horse, the textured oval base inscribed Minvielle in the maquette 31cm high, 31cm wide The present lot depicts the renowned thoroughbred horse Taine with its rider, Colonel Xavier Lesage. The pair won the gold medal for individual dressage with a spectacular performance in the 1932 Los Angeles Summer Olympics. Horse and rider are likely depicted after the Piaffe, a dressage movement consisting of a collected trot, as is evident from the horse's restrained, graceful pose. The pair trained at Saumur in western France, home of the French Military Riding Academy and the elite corps of ecuyers or instructors of the Cadre Noir, to which Lesage belonged. Sculptor Roger de Minvielle, who was himself a keen equestrian and had previously been a member of the Light Cavalry regiment in Orleans, had also joined the Cadre Noir in 1930. The sculptor's familiarity with horses and the world of equestrian sport is evident in his sensitive treatment of the animal's physique This bronze was cast as part of a 1981 limited edition commissioned by Les Amis du Cadre Noir, in the lead up to the 50th anniversary of Taine and Lesage's Olympic victory λ Indicates that this lot may be subject to Droit de Suite royalty charges. Demétre H. Chiparus, (Romanian, 1886 - 1947), patinated bronze model of a boy on the beach, the boy portrayed nude and crouching, resting on his elbows, on a textured bronze plinth signed D. H. Chiparus and dated MCMXI, on a moulded rectangular green, likely verde antico marble base with plaque inscribed A NOCINO 14 cm high, 26 cm wide CATALOGUE NOTES: Romanian sculptor Demétre Chiparus spent most of his career in Paris, and is considered one of the most important sculptors of the Art Deco period. Known mostly for his highly stylised chryselephantine models of dancing and reclining maidens, this realistically modelled boy sheds light on the sculptor's earlier work. Dated 1911, the present model likely predates Chiparus' move to Paris and may have been made during his sojourn in Italy, where he studied with sculptor Raffaello Romanelli between 1909 - 1912. The interest in realism as well as classical poses (the crouching figure can for example be related to the famous Roman 'Dying Gaul'), shows the influence of Italian sculpture on Chiparus' work. Within a few years, this realism would give way to the elegant, elongated lines of Art Deco
An Italian bronze model of a maiden, probably Venetian, 17th century, portrayed standing and nude but for light drapery across her breasts and loins, her head turned to dexter, her weight on her right leg; atop a square section marmo rosso antico socle, above a convent Siena marble and white marble plinth The bronze 14cm high, the height overall 25cm
Isaak Duchemin, (French, fl. mid 19th century) and after the Antique, a patinated bronze model of the Faun with Clappers, late 19th century, cast after the Antique, the figure portrayed in dance, a cymbal held in each hand, his right foot atop a scabellum, the oval base inscribed Duchemin in the maquette, atop a convent Siena marble socle with beaded band 61cm high overall CATALOGUE NOTES: The marble original of the Faun with Clappers resides in the Uffizi Galleries, Florence, and indeed was first recorded in that city by Albert Rubens (son of the Dutch master) in 1665, having seen the piece in the collection of the Grand Duke of Tuscany. It had been moved to the Tribuna of the Uffizi by 1688. The model was always a popular one, being light hearted and playful, and was therefore much reproduced from the Renaissance onwards. A full-scale bronze version was made by Soldani for Prince Liechtenstein in 1695 and again for the Duke of Marlborough at Blenheim Palace, and small versions were produced by Zoffoli and Righetti, -and indeed by many others ever since

Emile Claus (Belgian, 1849-1924) A PASTORAL SCENE WITH CHILDREN AND CATTLE BY A POND Signed l.r., oil on canvas 53 x 92cmA superb picture by the Belgian artist Emile Claus (1849-1924) will feature in Sworders’ June 25-26 Fine Interiors auction. The picture, measuring 53 x 92cm, was purchased by the seller's grandfather before the Second World War.Emile Claus is celebrated as the pre-eminent artist of Belgian Impressionism and one of the founders of the group ‘Vie et Lumiere’ in 1904. Impressionism came late to Belgium but Claus began to fall under its spell, particularly the paintings of Monet and Pissarro, from the late 1880s.His early development, however, was characterised by a greater naturalism, partly influenced by the Barbizon landscape painters in France but also, more tellingly, by the work of Jules Bastien-Lepage.He embraced the prevailing taste for plein-air painting when he moved to Astene by the river Lys in 1883. The views of the river from his cottage ‘Zonneschijn’ (‘Sunshine’), formerly a hunting pavilion, in Eastern Flanders, were the inspiration for countless works throughout the rest of his life. Few of the landscapes from this early period are dated, but parallels between our painting and other river scenes, such as ‘Le Bateau qui passe’ of 1883, which also depicts children on a riverbank, point to a date for our picture soon after his arrival in Astene. This beautiful pastoral scene, in which the tranquillity of the water and the soft mists beyond the grazing cattle suggest early morning, is suffused with a gentle lyricism. It combines careful attention to detail with a mastery of light which pre-figures his conversion to the greater freedoms of Impressionism in the decades that followed.
