New Invented Colours, engraved vignette at head, 205 x 247mm., chipped at edges, a few light stains, n.p., c.1800. ⁂ An rare early advertisement for this Piccadilly firm of art suppliers, who here are advertising a method for fixing soft crayon and chalk drawings, and their range of fine water and oil colours
James (M.R.) A Warning to the Curious and other Ghost Stories, first edition, neatly repaired tear to pp.121-124, some minor splitting to gutter but gatherings and joints holding firm, some very occasional light foxing, original cloth, lettered in brown, spine slightly faded, a little rubbed, dust-jacket, spine rubbed and lightly faded with 1/2" portion of loss to head affecting title and chips to foot affecting imprint, corners chipped, some very light creasing to head and foot, but still a very good example of a scarce jacket, 8vo, 1925.⁂ M.R. James' last collection, and one of his bleakest, rare in the macabre dust-jacket. We can trace no other copy at auction in the last 30 years.
Churchill (Sir Winston Spencer) The Collected Works, 34 vol., Centenary Limited Edition, original vellum, gilt, occasional light yellowing to vellum, g.e., slip-cases, 8vo, 1973-76.⁂ A good example of this handsome production. Originally projected to comprise 3,000 sets, the company responsible collapsed before they could be completed, meaning around 1,750 to 2,000 sets likely exist.
Mathematics.- Euclid. The English Euclide, being the First Six Elements of Geometry, translated out of the Greek, with Annotations and useful Supplements, by Edmund Scarbrugh, half-title, title with engraved vignette of Sheldonian theatre, woodcut diagrams, title a little soiled, light marginal water-staining to first few leaves, contemporary panelled calf, rubbed, rebacked, corners repaired, Oxford, at the Theater, 1705.

Miller (Philip) Figures of Beautiful, Useful, and Uncommon Plants described in the Gardeners' Dictionary, 2 vol., 300 fine hand-coloured engraved plates, 2 folding, occasional light spotting and soiling, generally clean and crisp, modern black half morocco over marbled boards, uncut, [Great Flower Books p.121; Henrey 1387; Nissen BBI 1378], folio, 1809.⁂ A lovely clean copy of this reissue of Miller's acclaimed work, first published in 1760.
America.- Carver (Jonathan) Travels through the Interior Parts of North-America, in the years 1766, 1767, and 1768, first Dublin edition, folding engraved map, 2 engraved plates, some light soiling, a few stains, contemporary calf, a little worn and stained, [Sabin 11184], 8vo, Dublin, for S. Price [& others], 1779.⁂ Carver travelled as far west as Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Letters from an American Farmer; describing Certain Provincial Situations, Manners and Customs...and Conveying Some Idea of the Late and Present Interior Circumstances of the British Colonies in North America, first Dublin edition, 2 folding engraved maps of Nantucket Island and Martha's Vineyard, old ink signatures of Paul and Samuel Naylor to title and first leaf of text respectively, maps a little browned, light water-staining to text, modern morocco-backed marbled boards, spine faded, 12mo, Dublin, by John Exshaw, 1782.⁂ Rare and influential work by a French colonial who had his frontier farm destroyed in the War of Independence, including some of the earliest maps and descriptions of Nantucket & the whale industry and Martha's Vineyard. ESTC lists only 2 copies of this Dublin edition in the UK (BL and Trinity College Library), and 7 in America.

Middle East.- Shaw (Thomas) Travels, or Observations relating to Several Parts of Barbary and the Levant, 2 vol. in 1 including Supplement, first edition, half-title, title printed in red & black with engraved vignette of Sheldonian theatre, 32 engraved maps and plates on 29 leaves (3 printed on both sides), several folding or double-page, engraved head- & tail-pieces, initials and decorations, woodcut diagrams, tear to lower margin of O2 of Supplement, occasional light browning or soiling but generally a very good clean copy, contemporary calf, rubbed and scuffed, rebacked and repaired, [Blackmer 1533], folio, Oxford, at the Theatre, 1738-46.⁂ "Shaw was chaplain to the English factory at Algiers from 1720 to 1733. During this period he visited Egypt, Sinai, Palestine, Cyprus and most of North Africa...[The work] is especially esteemed for its botanical and zoological plates, in addition to the information Shaw imparts on the antiquities, geology and geography of the areas he visited." (Blackmer). The supplement was issued in response to Richard Pococke's attack in his Description of the East, published 1743-45.
Canada.- Cartwright (George) A Journal of Transactions and Events, during a Residence of nearly Sixteen Years on the Coast of Labrador..., 3 vol. in 1, first edition, engraved portrait frontispiece of the author visiting his fox-traps (lightly offset on title), list of subscribers, 2 large folding engraved maps (some tears neatly repaired), light staining to a few leaves, 3D1 with paper flaw tear to lower margin, unobtrusive embossed library stamp to a couple of leaves, a good uncut copy on large paper with wide margins, bound in handsome modern dark blue straight-grain morocco with gilt-tooled borders of Greek key and leafy sprays, spine gilt in compartments with five double raised bands, uncut, [Sabin 11150], 4to, Newark, 1792. ⁂ Cartwright was a British officer who made six expeditions to Newfoundland and Labrador between 1770 and 1786, hunting and trapping. His account includes descriptions of the animals, particularly foxes and beavers, and the native Indians and Eskimos. Please note: Lot 183 – this appears to be a made-up copy with the frontispiece portrait, title and folding maps mounted on stubs, and the portrait (which is on thicker paper) and the ‘Explanation of the Frontispiece’ leaf being shorter
Egyptology.- Mariette-Bey (Auguste) Album du Musée de Boulaq, first edition, 40 albumen prints by Emile Béchard and Hippolyte Délié mounted on thick card leaves (photographs c. 250 x 190mm.), some light spotting to mounts and text, title creased and reinforced at upper and lower edges, a few other leaves repaired at edges, original morocco-backed blind-stamped cloth, spine gilt, g.e., rubbed, folio, Cairo, Mourès & Cie., 1871.⁂ Important photographic record of the first Egyptian public museum, founded by Auguste Mariette in 1858 in a former warehouse on the banks of the Nile. Unfortunately the river flooded in 1878 damaging the museum and the contents were moved in 1892 to a palace in Giza and then again in 1902, to the current museum in Tahrir Square in central Cairo. The magnificent photographs by Béchard and Délié of Egyptian statuary, funerary artefacts, sarcophagi etc. won a Gold Medal at the International Exhibition in Paris in 1878.

G. J. & J. Robinson, 1787-89.⁂ Including 'The Morals of Chess' by Benjamin Franklin (pp.141-148 in vol.1), first published in The Columbian Magazine in December 1786. As one of the first Americans to play chess he advocates playing the game to develop skills, "The Game of Chess is not merely an idle amusement; several very valuable qualities of the mind, useful in the course of human life, are to be acquired and strengthened by it, so as to become habits ready on all occasions...".

It was at Wassermann's Munich apartment, in 1897, that Rilke first met Lou Andreas-Salomé, the Russian psychoanalyst who became his lover and life-long friend and confidante.

17th century leather box, light wooden box, lined with printer's waste (identified as Samuel Collins' "Epphata to F.T., or, The defence of the Right Reuerend Father in God, the Lord Bishop of Elie... concerning his answer to Cardinall Bellarmines apologie, 1628"), original blind-stamped calf, slightly rubbed, small wormholes in upper cover, leather ties for attaching to belt, 130 x 130mm., no later than 1628.⁂ Probably produced by a bookbinder or printer to keep small devotional books safe while travelling. The printer's waste was for a work by Samuel Collins, either an edition printed at Cambridge University Press in 1617, or by Hugh Perry in London in 1628.

Remarques on the Humours and Conversations of the Town, first edition, light browning, paper flaw to lower margin of E1 just touching a couple of letters, contemporary sheep, rubbed, spine wormed and slightly defective at head, [Wing R932B], 12mo, for Allen Banks, at the sign of St. Peter at the West end of St. Pauls, 1673.⁂ "Contrasting the merits of rural life with the vices of the city." Prout (Samuel, watercolour painter, 1783-1852) Hints on Light & Shadow & Composition as Applicable to Landscape Painting, autograph manuscript, 2 parts, Part I Hints..., 17pp., Part II Remarks..., 24pp., mainly written on the rectos with some notes and comments in another hand, unbound, loose, folio & sm. 4to, n.d., [c.1836].⁂ Prout was a prominent author of 'teach-yourself' painting manuals. His first book, Rudiments of Landscape in Progressive Studies (1813), demonstrated how to draw and to add sepia wash. Later art manuals such as Hints on Light and Shadow, Composition etc. (1836) were illustrated in the new technique of lithography, of which Prout was a pioneer. Their readership was large among the legions of amateur artists of the day. Part I of the manuscript is a fair copy of the first part of Prout's publication with only a few minor differences in the text towards the end. In the case of Part II, which was designed to be read inconjunction with a series of plates (not present), the text is very much a working draft, being heavily corrected and amended throughout.

Joyce (James) Autograph Card signed to Tullio Silvestri, in Italian, on verso of Joyce's card-de-visite, light soiling and creasing, 67 x 109mm, 9, rue de l'Universite, [Paris], [c.autumn 1921].⁂ An excellent card from Joyce discussing the impending publication of Ulysses. Joyce refers to "un articolo sul mio Ulisse nel Secolo" [an article on my Ulysses in the Secolo" and asks that Silvestri seek out and reserve him two copies. Tullio Silvestri (1880-1963), impressionist painter. He met Joyce in 1913 whilst the two were living in Trieste. Silvestri painted portraits of both Joyce and his wife Nora (famously referring to her as the most beautiful woman he had ever seen). He was also witness to the public falling out of Joyce and Roberto Prezioso and was even at points financially supported by the writer.

Cervantès Saavedra (Miguel de) The Life and Exploits of the ingenious gentleman Don Quixote de la Mancha, translated by Charles Jarvis, 2 vol., first edition of the Jarvis translation, engraved frontispiece and 68 plates (including a portrait of the author by George Virtue) most by Gerard van der Gucht after John Vanderbank, includes 'A Supplement to the Translator's Preface' by William Warburton and 'Advertisement concerning the Prints' by John Oldfield, occasional light browning, contemporary calf, joints cracked, rubbed and rather worn, [Palau 52479], 4to, for J. and R. Tonson, and R. Dodsley, 1742. ⁂ 'bella y sumptuosa edicion' (Palau). A richly illustrated edition, which 'is generally acknowledged as being close in spirit to the original.' (ODNB).
