Hopkinson (1894-1954) was also a Captain in the Durham Light Infantry and entered the Indian Civil Service in 1920 and advised on affairs relating to Tibet etc. (a quantity)

It was used as a prison from the 17th century and, in the early 19th century, it housed over 7,000 French prisoners of the Napoleonic Wars. Condition ReportThe case 62cm wide, 26cm deep, 50cm high. A few very minor breaks to the rigging. Some light loss and wear to gilt and painted detail. One or two very tiny knocks to wooden gallery and parquetry detail, with minimal separation to joints. One or two ebony squares with tiny thin splits. Some dirt and dust. Some light fading of colour to base. Overall appears in very good cosmetic and structural condition for its age and fragility. The extraordinary circumstance of this boy is that his skin, fibres, & intestines are all dried & very little of his bones appears, and weighs about 18 pounds. He is in the possession of Mr. J. Some small historic knocks, chips and losses throughout. A small divot a quarter of the way down, which has what appears to be contemporary decoration, therefore may be an original flaw in the wood. A split towards to the base. General light rubbing and wear to decoration. Dirt and patination. Owing to the intricacy of the decoration, the old damaged are not too apparent and do not detract from its appearance too greatly. Please see additional photos.
