1917 Marine-Nachtglas binoculars by C.P. Goerz; Berlin. Marked on the left back-plate "C.P. Goerz - Berlin" and marked on the right back-plate "Marine-Nachtglas - 8x56", numbered 522029. An extremely rare prototype made by Goerz for the German navy, in fitted oak carrying box. Box 10125.50 Other Notes: In August 1917 the German War Department ordered Goerz, Zeiss and Leitz to develop hand-held binoculars with a 70° field of view, 8X magnification, and an exit pupil of 7 mm, Leitz built two prototypes, a 42 7x50, and an 8x56 with the enormous field o f view of 157 m at 1000 m (9", light intensity L = 56). Goerz presented the very heavy 8x56, labeled 'Marine-Nachtglas' in February 1918. Its field of view was 150 m at 1000 m and it weighed 3,500 grams, compared to the 2,565 grams of the Leitz 8x56. Zeiss were awarded the contract. A similar pair of binoculars was sold in Bonhams New York on 25 Jun 2014 with the note that only 114 pairs were produced by Goerz. 10 by 12 by 5.50in. (25.4 by 30.5 by 14cm) In very fine condition. Wear to paint at edges. Lenses in position and undamaged. Fungus on prisms in left side, not visible in use. Base of carrying case loose.

1918 (10 October) Trio to North Irish Horse private, drowned on RMS Leinster.1914-15 Star, British War Medal 1914-1918 and British Victory Medal officially inscribed to 1459 Pte S Shiels N. IR. H.; together with copies of War Office service records and of the hand-written Telegram Form notifying Shiels' family of his loss on board the SS Leinster. Other Notes: RMS Leinster served as the Kingstown-Holyhead mailboat until she was torpedoed and sunk by German submarine UB-123 on 10 October 1918, while bound for Holyhead. She went down just outside Dublin Bay at a point 4 nautical miles (7.4 km) east of the Kish light. Over 500 people perished in the sinking – the greatest single loss of life in the Irish Sea.

An Etruscan revival memorial brooch and earrings, the central oval dome decorated with a band of seed pearls with a thin blue enamel border, to a countersunk reserve and moulded outer with bead and rope twist decoration, the reverse with oval glazed panel and photograph, with pin, 4.8cm long, together with a pair of matching tasselled earrings, (one drop loose) 5.5cm long, (18g gross) Condition Report / Extra Information Brooch - Centre panel a touch wobbly. Blue enamel bruised and with small chips. Pearls show signs of wear & dirt accrued around edges. Two discoloured (see photo). One notably so. Three very small holes to corners of front (only visible with x10 loupe). Light wear throughout. Scratches to reverse, particularly to area around hinge of pin. Pin may be a replacement / later addition. Glazed panel appears sound and fits neatly. Plenty of surface dirt under glass/over photo. In need of a thorough clean.Earrings: Enamel bruised with small chips. Pearls discoloured/slightly grey, very slightly more so to one earring. Surface wear to both throughout. Some tassels have small dents (not noticeable with the eye). One tassel loose, but still present.

An emerald and diamond cluster ring, the emerald cut emerald, approx. 9.3 x 8.3mm, in a rubover setting, surrounded by round brilliant cut diamonds, with two princess cut diamonds and two pear shaped diamonds, total estimated approx. 1.60cts, all set in white metal to a plain band stamped '585', size P, (7.6g) Condition Report / Extra Information Emerald depth approx. 5mm. Emerald is moderately included but still with decent translucency (still able to see back facets when viewed through table). Colour - medium. Stone is still bright. Diamonds - estimated colour range approx. K-L, one pear shape diamond is more notably tinted (not immediately with the eye but clearly seen with x10 loupe). Small split to corner of rubover mount, tiny hole to one shoulder (both only evident with x10 loupe). Light wear consistent with occasional use. Overall good.

A ruby and diamond ring, the central round ruby, approx. 6.9mm diameter x 4mm deep, surrounded by eight old European cut diamonds, total estimated weight of diamonds approx. 2.40cts, all claw set to tapered shoulders with scrolled decoration and plain band stamped '18ct', size M-N, (6.5g) Condition Report / Extra Information Ruby - (when viewed from above with a x10 loupe), facet edges abraded, cloud and possible two-phase inclusion near culet, small amount of faint silk; (with the eye) - minor facet edge abrasion (possibly not noticeable until attention drawn to it?), colour - raspberry red; stone vibrant. Diamonds: (within constraints of their settings) estimated colour approx. G-H, estimated clarity approx. VS1-2, diamonds lively & bright. Mount shows signs of light wear, overall good.

An early 20th century sapphire, emerald and diamond ring, the step cut sapphire approx. 5.5mm square, surrounded by small round diamonds, shoulders set with two emeralds and small round diamonds (one stone missing), all set in white metal to a slim pierced gallery and plain band of yellow metal stamped '18ct', size M-N, (2.5g) Condition Report / Extra Information Sapphire - straight line and colour zoning running diagonally across one corner, colour zoning faintly visible with x10 loupe and more so with a strong light from underneath, some silk to opposite corner of an area of dark solid tucked to one corner, light abrasions to facet edges (only visible with x10 loupe).Emeralds - abraded and some small chips.Diamonds - one stone missing.Underneath of one side of gallery has been dented slightly and has a small break away from upper edge.Band and mount show signs of wear consistent with age and wear.Total diamond weight estimated at approx 0.20cts.Total width of face approx 9mm.
